Jp, I have you added to the list. There are more of us there at the same time than I had originally thought. Hope to meet you and shake a hand.

Ruthies, regrettably we were only there for the weekend. Just for the wedding. We could not afford to take the kids out of school to make the trip longer since we are taking them out of school for 6 days in November. We stayed at Beachside Inn, a hotel that is pet friendly so we could take our Jack Russel with us. If you come into Destin on the Bay Bridge Bypass you intersect Hwy 98 and just go straight across 98 to the second stop sign. The beach is right in front of you and hotel on your right. They have 2 restaurants at the hotel, so it made it easier to feed everybody. Very clean, would recommend it for someone looking for a nice place to stay in Destin.

I would have liked to of taken the camper and tried out a spot, but if I camp the beach it is at Gulf State in Alabama. Destin is nice and on my possible stopoff points when going to or returning from Disney, but I have no input on local campgrounds. Maybe you can update me on how your visits have been.

Enjoying your trip report. We will be there 16th - 22nd. We are renting from Greenberg and have requested 700 loop. This will be our first trip NOT tent camping (I'm still worried we are going to miss the tent). And it will be our first trip with our DOG!!!

Ruthies--We stayed at Camp Gulf this past summer. We loved it!! Will def stay again, and beach front is the goal for our next trip there!

Somehow I managed to not include this in my original post, but I need to give a "hello" out to a good friend of mine who is watching the boards from Central America. A physician that I have had the privilege to work with over the years has recently moved from Alabama to Central America to do the Lord's work. He is a big Disney fan and was wanting me to send him some pics, so I told him to follow me on the boards and I would do just that. So hello to Dr. Hooper and his family and may the Lord look over and bless you for the good you are doing.

Beginning to work on my Mickey Light.


By luck, back in the summer I was cleaning out the loft of a 100 year old barn on my property and under a massive pile of junk I found two 10 gallon milkcans. The amazing part is that both of them still had the lids, which is almost unheard of. They were pretty bad rusted, but overall in good shape.



When I opened them up and looked inside I suddenly realized I had some serious cleaning to do.


Oh well, I'll start with one of them to get it ready for my trip. I'll hold the other one and maybe do a Minnie Mouse matching light with it for a later time.

Got my light globes in the mail. I had to order them from Home Depot. The stink of it is that if you heard about Home Depot's accounts being hacked and customer credit card information being stolen, well, mine was one of the cards that showed up on the list. However, Home Depot is providing me with a year of free credit watch and insurance against any losses that may occur.

Tiggerdad, I'm ready to see how your Mickey lamp turns out. I like seeing the different twist everyone puts on their lamps. Be careful cutting the holes. I've built three lamps so far and cutting the holes are the most nerve racking part for me.

Thanks 5er, I've heard several people talk about having busted their globe while trying to cut the holes in them. I picked up my drill attachment today before I went into work. Will give it a go this weekend depending on where I am with the milkcan.

The cans are gonna need some serious sanding. Got a family member who runs a bodyshop and has offered me the use of his sanders and materials to clean, prep, and paint the cans. Gonna go over there in the morning and get started. Says he has a lot of automotive paint leftovers that I can use and says he'll be glad to paint and clearcoat the can as long as I get the elbow work done.

Thats a good deal. Having the right tools and someone that can paint it up for you. I like the can's user as the base, I just used a umbrella base from Walmart. I might surprise the DW with a can base one day. We cant wait til our trip to the Fort Feb 14th. Looking forward to reading your trip report.

You probably already know this, but when I did my Mickey light, I put painters tape where the ears are and outlined and cut on the tape. Helps to prevent chipping.

5er, it does help to have someone who specializes in painting. He is actually the father of the niece I'm bringing with me, so he's more than willing to help.

Denise, thanks for the picture. That's pretty creative on their part.

Medic, thanks for the advice. I actually did pick up the tape. I'm using 2" masking tape so maybe it will help.

To drill the holes for mickeys ears I used my dremel they make a bit for plastic, we had no problems making the holes was easy peasy. My home depot (Clearwater) has the size globes that everyone is using, but we went with a kit for a larger globe (head) and we hacked saw all the stuff we did not need and then we used the light assembly that came with it just added more cord for the plug to run down the post. We used a "Y" connection socket and a small straight extended socket for the bulbs which put half the bulbs in the ears therefore the light is evenly distributed. Our head is 14" we used 8" globes for the ears. I can easily get my hand inside to change the bulbs to different colors. Use the CFL bulbs they don't get hot.
