These were neat but nerve wracking, wondering if they were going to come out at all! We used an iron on transfer some lovely person on the DISsign thread made for us, basted the Mickey head and tie dyed as usual. It had a lot of dye on the transfer and I was SURE it wouldn't come out...that it would be yet another wear around the house tshirt..but they look decent, I think.

Close up of camo shirt (bear with me, I am learning how to post pics tonight from Photobucket)

I didn't do a swirl design on this one...just scrunched it up. I should have scrunched it and used rubber bands on it but I didn't think about doing that. I like the overall effect but I want to do it again...l:scared1: I used dark brown from Dharma and WOW at the red speckles that was in this dye! I thought we mixed it up well...you couldn't see the speckles while we were dyeing the shirts so we didn't know they were there until after we rinsed it out. Oh well...will try again! We did use urea too...but apparently it didn't help!

I know ya'll are sick of looking at pics and I apologize for that! This is the last one for tonight, I promise!

This one was kind of an oops shirt too...when I printed out the first iron on transfer...silly me forgot it needed to be flipped so that the text was readable! We were going to let Brody use it as a sleep shirt but after HE tie dyed it (he is 3) and it turned out so pretty, my partner decided to dip into the fabric paint again...lol! She painted the Mickey head black and it gives an interesting vinyl looking effect.

I have learned so much on this thread and thank all of you for all of your tips and pointers...especially our Queen of Tie Dye, Roxy :worship:

I welcome questions, comments, criticisms...:3dglasses

YOU GOOOO GIRL!!!

You did awesome! It's all about time, lots of time, love all the different colors and the iron on is cool too, love it!!

The red dots are a pain in the you know what!! Agrr, I use UREA and hot water, well not burning hot but warm enough and let it sit for 20 minutes or so, shake it really good, since red is used to make brown and gray too its normal to see them.

Im so proud of you guys!! Thank you for posting your pics.

Thanks so much! They don't look like yours...lol...but I am happy with them :) I still plan to be a loyal customer of yours...:rotfl:

I noticed the specks in the the grey too! It kinda worked out to my advantage though. They showed up in my grey and hot pink spiral and my specks were magenta. I noticed all the different colors when I rinsed my measuring spoon in the sink after I had measured the dye powder into my squirt bottle. I was like "OMG...Annie (my tiedye partner) GET IN HERE AND LOOK IN THE SINK!!!!!!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE A FRIGGIN RAINBOW!!!!!!!!!!" There was magenta and red and blue and purple and yellow...it was awesome lol.

Does anyone have any good tips about how to keep red from taking over the white areas during the wash? We made some more tie dye shirts (not Mickey heads) last week and while we got good colors on them the red ran wild in the washing machine and colored the white areas PINK! They weren't that pink before the wash...somewhat but not as bad as when we washed them. We put salt and vinegar in the wash...and used Synthrapol, washed in cold water. I've seen some nice shirts that have a lot of red in them on here that stayed white where it is supposed to...lol...so I know it can be done! Any help would be appreciated!

That's weird. Maybe you need to watch them more than once, if you see a lot of color in the water, wash them again just with Syn. You should be able to keep your areas white. I had done white and black and the white always stays white.

Your shirts turned out great! I especially like the ones with the iron-on design! I've done a lot of shirts with red in them, and I find that if I rinse the heck out of them in the sink they don't get pink in the wash. I mean, reaaaalllly rinse. I fill the sink a little, swish the shirt to get the dye out, drain it, and keep doing that until the water is no longer pink. Sometimes 8-10 times. It's very time-consuming, but it does keep the white areas white! HTH!! :thumbsup2

I just want to thank you again PixieDust32 for the tie dye shirts we ordered for our sons trip he was granted through the Dream Factory. They looked awesome and once we had them on they looked even better. :rotfl2: We chose to wear them on our day at the Magic Kingdom. We had many compliments through out the day. Many people asked if we made them and I was very happy to say sorry we didn't but PixieDust32 on the Dis boards did. Something as wonderful as those tshirts, the credit needed to be given to you 100%. So hopefully you will get a couple extra orders from the word of mouth. Even CM's kept complimenting us on our shirts. I honestly wasn't sure if my DH would go for the matching shirts but he wore it proudly. And has worn it since being home too. I have taken them out of the tshirt drawers so we have them for our next trip. LOL

Thanks again and enjoy the picture of our family in them at the MK.

So glad his wish came true ♥ thanks for sharing the picture. Love it.

Thanks Roxy and MagicMomma for the tips! I will try rinsing rinsing rinsing next time....and washing them twice! It is probably too late for these shirts because we have already dried them so the color is probably set.

Here are our families Mickey shirts. We did this as a family project...we received a tye die kit for Christmas with directions to make these printed from this thread on the dis board. The one thing we did different is we basted through both layers of our shirts so that we have a Mickey head on both the front and the back. I also rinsed these out like crazy in the sink and then I put them on a quick rinse cycle in my wash machine BEFORE I washed the shirts and that really helped get the white parts of the shirt much whiter. I also added vinegar to the wash water to help set the dye...I figure if it works for easter eggs and my color clothes it will help with the shirts. This was fun and we are all thrilled with the results!

The shirts are packed away and we have 9 weeks to go...SO excited!!!

PixieDust32, would you mind sharing how you were able to get such complete coverage of color for these shirts? I have tie dyed a few shirts, but never have been able to get this kind of coverage.

Do you soak your shirts in soda ash before banding them so that you can squeeze out almost all of the liquid?

Do you use larger rubber bands so that they are not wound too tight?

Would love to hear your method for these:worship:

More pictures! I took the pictures outside to use the natural light and to show the real colors of the shirts.

The little shirt are soooooo cute! Loved making them.

Oh my!!! These are wonderful. Would love tutorial if you wouldn't mind:)

Would love to make these for our next trip to Disney!!!!

So after lurking around this thread for months and getting ideas, I decided to actually tie dye shirts for our upcoming Girls Trip to Disneyland. I've tie dyed plenty of times before and I have all the chemicals and dyes and I have the technique down pat (I prefer to use string instead of rubber bands), but I was terrified to try this. I've never tie dyed anything where you stitch and bast before, but I thought what the heck? Tie Dye isn't supposed to be perfect right?

Well, I think I did pretty well!

Thanks to everyone who has posted pictures and given directions and suggestions!

I seem to be having a problem posting, so hopefully this one will work. I keep posting but never see it showing up! Ugh! Anyway, here's my most recent batch of tie dye shirts. I was very pleased with how all 7 turned out. I didn't have to make any corrections or use a bleach pen on any of them!

Spart02, your shirts looks great and what an awesome job you did you the Mickey heads! I hope mine can turn out half as good as yours.

Did you tighten the rubberbands around the stitching just as tight as they would go? And how many did you use?

Also, I would love to know which colors you used. They look fabulous together:hippie:

HI!

I don't have any special technique, I think its practice...To answer your questions..

Do you soak your shirts in soda ash before banding them so that you can squeeze out almost all of the liquid?
You have to soak them in soda ash for at least 45 minutes. Yes, after they're soak just wring them with your hands.

Do you use larger rubber bands so that they are not wound too tight?

Depending on the size of the shirt, for smaller shirts I use smaller rubber bands, you want them to be thing so you get pretty patterns, otherwise the dyes just spreads out all over.

:) thanks

lovespekes,
I soak in soda ash and wring it out by hand. I usually soak in the soda ash for a good 40-60 minutes. Then I go on to the dying.
As far as rubber bands go, I do put them on pretty tightly and usually try to get about 3/4" on adults shirts and 1/2" on children's shirts. I usually try to use thicker rubber bands so I don't have to put on tons and tons. I think I used at least 4 rubberbands per shirt...maybe even more. I don't like making any corrections with the bleach pens, so I would rather have a bigger ring of white around the heads than to chance it with using fewer rubber bands.
I used Dylon "Bahama Blue" and "Ocean Blue", which I think was cute b/c our upcoming Disney cruise is to the Bahamas! Good luck with your shirts! Please post pictures when you're done!

I was so excited to open my box yesterday from Dharma but the excitement quicky changed to disappointment. I discovered I ordered soda ash...which I already had....instead of urea.

Now to decide if I pay shipping for just the urea or to do the shirts without :confused3

I was all set to get my shirts started today.

What would you do? Pay the high price of shipping just for the urea or just do the shirts without it?

Dang!!!!!!:sad2::sad2::sad2:
