Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Here's the template. I printed it out on cardstock to make it easier to draw around when you make your basting line. I also used it again to outline the head after dyeing to outline the head with the bleach pen.

Nice! Thanks so much Showpony!

I have done the Mickey tie dye shirts in the past with Tulip and/or Jaccard dyes I purchase from my local AC Moore. They came out ok, but the colors really faded a lot after the very first rinse/wash. For my twins birthday party this summer, I ordered a tie dye kit from Dharma and made rainbow tie-dye shirts (50 of them - no Mickey heads, as it would have taken way too long!). The colors were fabulous! Very bright and did not fade. Dye went into crevices easier. T-shirts came out awesome and were a huge hit! People really thought they were done professionally ;-) Ordered more dies from Dharma and will be working on new mickey head shirts today for upcoming Disney trip. I am going to make one for my pet sitter, too.

Thank you Parla, and Disney Runner!

I am eagerly waiting for my package to arrive from Dharma (Thursday, according to the tracking). I'll be busy this weekend!! I just need to decide if I am going to do all the shirts at once or if I'm going to do a massive project and do a bunch at once.

I got all of our stuff from Dharma a couple of days ago. It's killing me that I don't have time to work on the shirts right now. After reading earlier posts I thought the order would take longer. It shipped out the day after I ordered it and got here pretty quickly. I'll post our shirts when we do them. Probably two-three weeks from now since I'm helping to organize the volunteers for our school's fun fair.

Okay so I decided to make my first attempt at making these tye dyes and I am not sure what I did wrong?
Out of 4 shirts only one turned out good.
I was hoping maybe someone could help me with what I did wrong.
1 shirt the mickey head is visible but not white, it blends in with the shirt but you can see the outline.
1 shirt the mickey head looks more like a circle.
Am I not stiching correctly and using too much dye???
Please help cause I would like to make new ones and I don't want to screw the next ones up.... I will try to post pictures
Thank you soo much

My first thought would be the elastics weren't tight enough to block the dye. Or you didn't use enough elastics. How tight did you make them and how many did you use?

I used 6 or 7 bands and they were about 1 inch. Is there something that I did wrong that the heads didn't come out right on the 2 of them?

Looks like your stitches were not so close or maybe your bands not really thight.

I wasn't sure if the pic was going to pist. This a cute dress I made and added the girls name on the back.

You guys can add names too, they look better on bright colors like there.

I also made this pirate Haloween shirts... We're going to the party next month and my kids are too old to dress up..Well, they say that so.. :(

I remade them last night with close stiches and bands tight. Will find out tonight how they turned out...

Thanks so much for your help :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:

I talked to some quilters yesterday about Syntrapol, and they said they just use the shout color catchers so I am going to try that tomorrow with my shirts I am dying today.

I would be interested in your results. I have a he machine now. I've always used Tulip dye and never had a problem with colors running. I was thinking of trying the Dharma dyes. With Syntrapol, I read you need to fill the washer with water first. How would this work with a front loading machine?:confused3

Fill the washer first? Never heard that before. Don't worry about that DisneyRunner, I'd never done that, I put the shirts first or while the washer is filling and then pour the Syn. :) some people try to make it too complicated I guess.
