Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Here is our results. Not the best, but I haven't done much tie-dying before. This is us at the airport getting ready to go :)

At the moment, I'm prepping to make more shirts. It may take a few days to collect all my supplies. I'll post the results when finished. :hippie:

Well, I've got my mickey shirts for our trip sitting with the dye on them. (I also made tshirts for us with an iron on that has mickey head, some of the characters and 2011) Got the mickey head on, sewed around it with floss (even made my partner who doesn't sew help me) but I'm not sure how they will turn out. I'm wondering if I should have squeezed them out more after soaking them in the soda ash. I wondered about sending them through the spin cycle of the washer but didn't know if that would take too much water out of them so I didn't. Now I'm not so sure.

DD's shirt really ran when I wrapped it in the plastic wrap. Luckily I had 3 of them in her size so I did a new one right away. If her first one turned out fine then she will have two of them. With all of them even though I had the elastic around the mickey head wrapped as tight as possible, the dye seemed to run into the rest of the shirt before I even got to dying the rest.

I still don't understand just how the head turns out so defined on some people's shirts. I guess I don't have to understand, just follow the directions. :confused3

I must say I wasn't impressed with my dye kit though. I got the tulip brand kit that was supposed to do 12-24 shirts. There was 12 colours in it. The problem was, none of the little bags with the colour powder was labelled so I had to make up all 12 colours (ok, actually only 11 because I guessed right as to which was the brown and left it till last so didn't have to mix it because we weren't using it.) to figure out which was which. I wasn't impressed that I had to waste colours I didn't intend on using just becuase I couldn't tell which was which. You'd think they would label them somehow.

I guess I will wait till tomorrow and see. We made 5 shirts for us with mickey heads, plus the extra for dd and i made two plain swirl tye dye shirts for my niece and nephew because I had the shirts and lots of extra dye.

So, what have others done when washing them. I figured I would rinse them in the sink till most of the colour is gone then shove them all in the same load in the washing machine to wash them. My partner thinks this will make the colours run on each other. I don't. What to others do when it comes to the end?

Look forward to hearing from someone before tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks!

Take off the rubberbands and pull out the thread. Be careful, as the dye may spray you. Try to rinse the shirts, individually, until the water runs clear. It may take some time. I use cold water. I throw all my shirts into one load. Good luck. Please post your final product, if possible, I would be interested in seeing them. I will be working on my shirts this week.:hippie:

Working on our families right now, I hope they turn out!!! I will try and post pictures. Does anyone know how long the dye is good for once you make it? I made it in bottles, then squirted it on.

I used Tulip Dye. I think I read somewhere on the instructions that it should be used within 45 minutes, otherwise it starts to lose its effectiveness.

I used Dylan. I didn't keep it, just pored it down the drain.

Just a few helpful hints:

Once you roll the shirts in the cinnamon roll, its really hard to tell whose shirt is whose, labeling them might have been a good idea.

Dylan dyes get better reviews then Tulip, I found them at Joann Fabrics and they were on sale this week for $2.09. I thought the colors were very bright while I was dyeing.

I am going to let my shirts sit for 4 days.

I will let you know how it goes.

OK, so here is my first try at posting pictures.

These are both for my dd. The one on the left is the very first one we did. After it was wrapped, it looked like all the colours bled together and since I had extra shirts in her size, we did a second one.

These two belong to my partner and I. We both chose to have our mickey head be lime green for DIS board. Mine has the purple on it. I couldn't make up my mind which colours to use, so I just picked at random.

These shirts belong to my boys. I love my younger son's be best, the green and blue one. That is my favourite out of all of them.

These aren't Mickey ones but since I had lots of extra dye and a couple extra tshirts so I made these for my niece and nephew. The orange one is for my nephew, orange is his favourite colour.

This is one of the other shirts I made for us. We each have one of these. They are all different colours.

I wish there was a little less white on our Mickey head shirts but I think all in all, they turned out pretty good. I was concerned that the heads wouldn't turn out but it seems they worked out well.

Great job Celidh! You were so worried. Now I know I can do it if you thought you didn't do it right and it still turned out well. Just follow the directions and I should be fine. :goodvibes

I'm finishing up my shirts and then will be prepping to dye. I plan on dying this afternoon and then let the shirts sit until Wednesday morning. I will try to post the finished product asap.

Thanks for the comments. I was fairly happy with my shirts. I know what I would do different now. Get more dye in the cracks! It seemed like lots at the time since the dye was dripping out of the shirt, but obviously not.

DisneyRunner2009, does the colour last better or get more vibrant if you leave it longer? I left mine just over 24 hours. I would be afraid it would start to go mouldy in the heat if something wet was left sitting around here for 4 days. I look forward to seeing pics of your shirts.

Parla, just like the little engine that could... "I think I can, I think I can" :rotfl:

PixieDust32, I would love to know how you got the dark blue streaks going through the blue and red Mickey head shirt. I love that shirt. The colours are amazing.

Going to make an attempt to make a shirt. I was not going to but DH talked me into it!!!!! Will make an attempt at it this weekend!!

Ok, thanks. I'm hoping to pick up some dye this weekend and try this. I've only tie dyed once before at church a few years ago. If I mess up, I have plenty of time to try again. We're not going to WDW until October 2012. Any other craft ideas to make the time pass?

After letting my shirts sit for 39 hours, I rinsed them and went outside for a walk. I came back and rinsed them again, to be sure the water ran clear. It did not, so I continued to rinse them. Now they are drying. Some shirts need tweaking. The bags my shirts were in had a slight amount of condensation in them, no mold. I don't know if allowing the shirts to sit longer, makes them more vibrant. I figure, it can't hurt.
