Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

My oldest DD just wanted one color for the shirt and one color for the Mickey head. She really likes it.:cool1: The blue ones I just followed PixieDust's instructions about getting in the folds. That makes all the difference in defining the "lines" of color. Those are for me and my husband. I made the red and black ones for my friends. They are going to Disney with us.

I used the Tulip brand - I had a coupon at ACMoore. :) I thought they turned out really good especially for our first try.

I use the tulip kits, also. Those kits work great for me. I may try the soda ash next time. I've never used it with my previous dye jobs.

I am finished with my shirts... and I do not think I will tie dye again anytime soon. Although I am very pleased with the results, it was such I mess. I used the Jaquard kit from michaels (2 kits) for 2 adults and 2 toddlers, but I had plenty left over.

I would love to post my pictures, but I don't think I can?

:thumbsup2 GREAT COLORS SCOOFER!

Just a few little tips that I have found while doing mine....
I put the dye in those plastic ketchup bottles (you can find them in housewares/kitchen stuff at walmart). They worked FAB. I put on rubber gloves, had all my colors ready in the bottles (with the extra that wouldn't fit sitting in bowls waiting to refill the bottles), and did them in my stainless steel kitchen sink. I'd do one color, hold the shirt in my hand while I rinsed the bottom of the sink (where the excess had poured off), then moved onto the next color. It was nearly mess free! I also just throw them in a walmart sack and tie it closed instead of wrapping in saran wrap, seemed to work fine!

PixieDust32 - all of yours are GORGEOUS - how do you twist them when you have multiple heads? And what is your trick for those nice crisp Mickies and separation of colors without too much white. Can't wait to try these! BTW, where did you find the knit little girl dress?

Thank you. Depending on how I want them to look is how I tied it, I experiment a lot, sometimes i gather one point and go from there, sometimes I make several twist around the heads and then band them. Just have fun with them and experiment, that is the beauty of tie dye, you never know how they would turn.

There is no secret, I guess lots of practice and some "oops" The girls dresses, some I get them from Kids stores, others from wal mart, target, I pretty much shop with tie dye in mind haha when I see something I think it might be good for tie dye I just get it.

I made a couple dresses just haven't upload them.

PixieDust32 - I would love to see the dresses. I know I will attempt this, but I might just have to commission you to make me some if they don't turn out well. I sent your Etsy page to my friend :lovestruc I was drooling

One more question - do you double stitch the Mickey Heads or just a really thick tight set of rubber bands or both?

You guys inspired me.

I'm just finishing up rinsing my tie dye shirts. I bought a tulip brand kit and made 2 kid sized mickey head shirts, and 2 med mens shirts with a spider pattern. and a few other small things. So far I really like the way they look and will try to upload pictures tomorrow. This is my trial run to see if my family wants to do this for our september trip to DLR.

I think I might be hooked...

Ok, I have a turquis blue shirt that got white blothces in the last wash for some reason...not too happy about that, but anyways.... I thought I could do a tyedye on that with Bleach.
Anyone know how to do a Mickey head in white on this? I know I would use bleach, but I guess I don't know what the steps would be. I assume this is what they call reverse tye dye

The simplest way, I can think of, would be to outline your Mickey head. Then fill in the shape using the infamous bleach pen. Put something in between the shirt, I use a plate. This way you will not have a Mickey outline on the back of the shirt as well. I, however, have only used the pen to outline Mickey's head.

I had never used bleach as a tie dye method, the bleach pen to outline the ears yes, but using blech never.

These are so cool! My kids want to try this out! Thanks for the great pictures and how to do them.

***Saving this Thread so I can find it ****

I'm going to attempt to start these today while babyK is napping....DS4 wants me to try and do an Incredibles one too....crossing fingers on that one!
