Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Like everyone else money is tight so, I saw this and figured I would try it for our up coming trip. Now it is 3pm and I am scared to see at 8:30 (24hrs wait) how my shirts came out. We had our shirts, 100% XL youth and 2 4X 50/50. First thing I am scared of is the 50/50 mix. Next we bought the 3 color walmart rock rainbow color dye. (No ash required) now worried about that. Then I think I might have sewed wrong. I used plain wax floss and just went in and out all the way around the outside of the pencil mickey. Then pulled real tight, tied and put about 10 or more rubber bands on the area. Then spirialed and put another 10 or so rubberbands to hold my danish. So far it looked just like the pics. Went to dye the mickey heads and noticed that even with the 10+ rubberbands ink was getting underneath. Wraped the mickey heads up in seran wrap and tied with another rubber band. then used the three colors in 1/3 wedges. Problem if you have one drop of the other color in another it looks like freckles. Second barely had enough in the bottle to cover the white on the outside of the shirts, (probably because of the 4X size). I wraped them up in saran wrap and now I am waiting. I want to run in there and check but I am hopeing the longer I wait the darker the colors and hopefully the color soaked down into the folds.
Now at 8:30 I am planning to go over to my kitchen sinck (stainless steel) and rinse them out and untie them. Do you rinse the mickeys first or last? Do you rinse till it runs clean and then ringe them out? Then can I put all three in the wash togeather to wash them? Can they go in the dryer to set the colors? I want to put them up not to be worn till we get to Disney any tips.
Also if I need to use a bleach pen to clean up anything, do I draw with it then wash the shirts? Will it bleach anywhere else but where I want it to? Or should I wash, use the pen and then wash again?

Please help!:sad2:

Hey Heather! Let me try to answer some of you questions :)

AND just remember this is just what I do.. everyone has different methods that worrk for them :)

I rinse everything at once.. In fact, I usually throw the whole bundle under running water for a few minutes before I even touch it bc there is so much dye running out. Then I clip off the bands, and rinse until the water is mostly clear. Then I throw the shirt in a pre filled washer (with Tide detergent), and start the next shirt. I wash my shirts together, however I make sure I am right there when the washer stops so they dont lay on top of each other while wet.

I don't use bleach often, but if I do, I do it AFTER the first wash. The reason is things often look VERY different after a spin in the washer!~

Today's shirt!

We just finished dying our shirts. My hands are rainbow colored. I'm afraid my Mickey will not turn out, as i saw it bleeding past the rubber bands. I think the shirts were to wet, not damp. The Mickeys never turn out as hoped. We always buy the Tulip kits, use 100% cotton shirts and prewash them. Dry shirts may absorb more? I usually buy the ultimate kit and always get the number of shirts expected. More if you water down the dye. If things don't turn out I still have a few days and half the dye kit to redo.

I remember thise thread, long time no see!

Here some of my shirts, just to share with ya'll!

Hopefully your bands will be enough to give you a nice definition line, and you are right you still have time to touch up if need be! You guys will look great!!

At the risk of embarassing her, I wanted to point out that Cassi (Tinker) was listed as a featured artist on Dharma's website in July! I went on today to see if they had new colors and I thought, "Wait, I know those Mickey tie dyes!"

Congrats, Cassi!

If you're buying dye at Michaels or Joann (those 50% off coupons sure make it worth it), buy the Jacquard kits. They are much better than Tulip.

We used to have an AC Moore, which carried the individual color containers of fiber-reactive dye, but the store closed. :( I sure do miss it!

Awwww!! Thank you!! I was sooo thrilled when I saw that to! I guess they figured since I spend so much money with them I deserve it!! :rotfl:

I agree, Jaquard makes GREAT dyes- you know you can actually buy them in bulk on Ebay for a very decent price! Just look up "Jaquard fiber reactive dye".

Made this one for Mickey not so scary halloween party. She wanted lots of color.

On these the request was less color and more white. The ears are red but the look orange on the picture, I guess is the light or the flash
