Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I have tie dye kits that I picked up at Michaels, white 100% cotton fruit of the loom tshirts, and am ready to attempt to make shirts. however, the kits did not come with the soda ash to soak the tshirts.
Is this something that I can buy seperately or should I not worry about doing this?
Also, is there a link some one could post to give me a good mickey head outline to use?
It depends.. what brand is your kit? Some of them do not require soda ash, bc the dyes are not fiber reactive.

Thanks!! I'm using one of the tye-dye kits that i got at the craft store... is there something better to use?? i used the rit dye for the black mickey. any tips would be great appricitaed!!!
WOW! I am amazed what you did with the RIT! hah! That stuff is very hard to use bc it bleeds a lot! AMAZING! You know, everyone has their preferences, I prefer Dharma's Fiber Reactive Dyes, but other people like other brands, I think it is just a preference thing. I also like using Jaquard dyes, but for me the Dharma Dyes are a better value, bc I order in bulk online. You can buy a small Jaquard kit at Michaels if you ever want to try it out!

The kits that I picked up are TULIP brand from Michael's

In the kit directions it says that you can dye the shirts dry or wet.
It seems that it would be easier if they were damp.

You don't need soda ash with the Tulip kits :) I never worked much with that brand, but I am sure one of the other girls could tell you which way was easier- I would think wet would be easier to work with, but dry would yield brighter results...

They're in the dryer now! I think some of them turned out ok- I know I'm going to have to outline the mickey head's. The black bled a lot. Haven't decided if I'm going to go on a bleach pen hunt, or use a white fabric paint pen I have.

I'll take pics as soon as they're done!

I think for a tulip kit, most of the colors came out pretty bright.

I don't think any of my spirals came out as good as I would have liked, and some I did were not sprials, but just randomness, lol.

Sooooo not much longer. :goodvibes

can't wait to see!!!

Your shirts all look great!!! I finally bit the bullet and attempted my first. I did something wrong. My mickey head blead past the dental floss. ( And I pulled it TIGHT!!!) What did I do wrong? Please help!

I read on here many pages back and can not remember when nor where on here, so please indulge me and help answer my question.

I will need to be dying oh about 40-50 shirts with a group of cub scouts and with the dye I need to soak in soda ash. I read that it is cheaper to buy some pool chemical, but I can not remember what chemical it was. Does anyone remember what it is and does it work as good as the soda ash? Thanks for the help!

You can order the bleach pens off of Amazon.com!

Just thought I'd share :). I just searched Bleach Pen.

My fabric paint pen- turned out to be some kind of transfer pen where you're supposed to draw on paper then Iron it on- cool idea in theory, but you can't get it to draw a decent line- so now I need to find Bleach pens.............

I  Amazon sometimes

Meant to add:

Cross your fingers for me that at least one for each person turns out ok!

I did camo colors for the guys, and bright colors for the girls! So we'll match, but not be matchy (BIL doesn't do matchy but loves camo, so I'm hoping to talk him into it) For our mickey head shirts I'm customizing he probably won't get one, just a shirt that says I don't do matching shirts (My SIL saw that one somewhere).

I can't wait to see how your shirts came out! :goodvibes

:banana::banana: OK, so I have pics of the spirals! Guess I am not so bad at it after all!

It just occured to me I forget to take a picture of the one I made for my son! I'll have to go back and do that later. :thumbsup2

It's called Sodium Carbonate- not to be confused with Sodium BIcarbonate. Your local Walmart should still carry it withh the pool chemicals- it is called "PH PLUS" and has a purple lid- HTH

Did you put plenty of bands TIGHT below the floss?

Me to! Although I wish they offered more free shipping... I have been really craving that Rasberry Blue Popcorn that they sell at the mall (of course, not here in AR) and the shipping kills it! Can't bring myself to pay $12 for a little bag of popcorn! hahaha!

TK! They look great! The colors are soooo bright, I love it!

Thanks for saying that about my spirals! I already sold the red one so I am taking that as a good sign :teacher: I also did a tank, I will post pics in a bit!

:cool1: I have to slow down bc I am going to WDW in less than 3 weeks!! :cool1:

Good for you! The two I just posted are sold as well, so that's nice. :thumbsup2

I'm getting ready to place an order with Dharma soon and I'm mega excited about that. :goodvibes

WOO HOO!!!! That's awesome. :banana::banana::banana:

TK_ you will LOVE Dharma I promise!!! I am waiting on a huge order from them right now... I am actually going to do two DRESSES this week! It should be fun! Some of the colors are a super value when you buy in bulk- hot pink comes to mind- it's like 3.95 for a 2oz, but only 7.95 for an 8oz! Thats like getting half of it for FREE! haha! Of course- I think I am going to need a bigger studio if a buy much more- our food pantry is already a T shirt closet, and one of the cabinets in the kitchen is now full of sodium carbonate and dye! hahaha- poor DBF!

I'm at the point now where I don't know where I'm going to put all this stuff. I'm in the process of a major cleaning/decluttering of our place anyway, so that's good, but I really need a designated area. Right now, the dye is in the kitchen, all the shirts are in the bedroom in a laundry basket. It feel so haphazard. :lmao:

Thanks for the tip on the colors. I'll have to pay attention to the pricing.

Here are my first attempts. My yellow was supposed to be green, but didnt turn out that way.

I love that your yellow isn't green! I think the colors you got go great together. And I love that little dress, it's too cute. :goodvibes

I tried my first couple of t-shirts today!

I had two "tulip" kits. Each kit advertises for up to 8 shirts each and says you can dye damp or dry. Now I knew that I would never get 8 shirts out of each kit, but I barely got 2 adult shirts out of each.

I did 2 spiral shirts with the "classic" box. These shirts were damp to dye. I was able to dye all of both shirts however could have used more.

I also tried 2 "bullseye" style with the "vibrant" kit. These 2 shirts I did dry. I don't suggest this. The dye does not soak into the shirt, and we ran out of dye before either shirt was finished. There will defenitely be alot of white on both of these.

I will get home from work around 8 tomorrow night, and will rinse them and take pictures then.

I love the yellow with the other colors -- I think the "mistake" is better than the intennded original!

And I LOVE the little dress (and the model). Where did you get the dress?

Thanks! My mom made the dresses (actually 4 of them). I couldnt find any plain white dresses and I really wanted to do tie dye dresses for my girls.

I will agree with you on these Tulip kits. I attempted to do some dry shirts and all I was doing was 1 solid color on 1 adult shirt, and 1 color gradient on a child's shirt. I had to keep refilling the bottle after I got about a third of the way down just to make it. Needless to say both ended up gradient style to some degree. I will not be using these smaller Tulip kits again. I will also never try to dye dry shirts again, because as you said it just rolled off and didn't absorb.

Yeah, I am not a huge Tulip dye fan either! I think you can get about three shirts max out of the little kits! Of course, if you are just doing a set for a few ppl they are just fine, but if you are doing a lot, you would spend a fortune!
