Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I think that is really cool to! So many creative people here! OK, here is my latest...

OK, lady, start thinking of a Snow White design for our tie-dye party. We're doing tie-dye at work on Thursday, so I'll finally be trying the Mickey head!!

I looooove the Tink!! You realize now that you'll be stuck with me the entire time you're in Nompton, right?!?

It is made by Tulip- I bought it at Hobby Lobby. It is like doing Batik- you put it on, let it dry, then dye the shirt- then wash it out. Where you put the resist (in theory) should stay white!

Okay walk me through this slowly. I have Resist and I want to use it in combination with a tie dye technique. Do you soak your shirts in soda ash before or after you apply the Resist or not at all on those shirts? If you soak them after, doesn't that mess up the Resist?

*prewash fabric
*put resist on and let dry
*soak in soda ash 20 min
*dye shirt and let sit 24 hours
*wash resist out with HOT water
*wash in washer on cold setting

hahahaha, thats fine! lol! I am actually trying to think of a snow white design for a customer right now.. I made the tutu but cant figure out what to do with the shirt! I thought about making it look like the dress she wears, but it is a tank top, and the sleeves make the dress! ideas anyone???
Maybe I should switch to a T?

Okay. Did you have to find some way wrap the shirt flat for the 24 hours? If so, how did you accomplish that? I only have one more chance with the dyes that I have left, so I need as much advice as possible before the attempt which will probably be this weekend. TIA

Jenn- I just layed them on a trash bag, then covered them with another trash bag. They stayed wet the entire time I would check them every now and then just to make sure. If you are doing a different design on the front than the back, I would suggest putting Walmart bags in between the layers

Okay, I get it, but I have one more question. Is Resist clear, or can you see it when you apply it?

It is clear! So yes (reading your mind) it is kind of hard to see what you are doing!!

I figured as much. Although, if you made a big cut out of whatever you wanted to outline with paper and laid it on the shirt, it might make it a little bit easier. Still, I love the free flow of our lines. More tie-dye-ey. I just made a new word.

The Tulip one I use is a little yellow -- just tinted enough so you can see it. But mine does get gooey when wet, so I don't use soda ash once I've used the resist.

Yeah, mine gets gooey to, but unfortunately for me my dyes wont work without the soda ash! haha- so I am just extra careful in the gooey area

Thanks! Yeah, I have have seen people who do it that way at WDW! We always seem to find the other tie dyers while we are there! lol

Wow! Wow! Wow! Fabulous shirts!!! I am NOT a fan of Tinkerbell but LOVE that shirt! So creative! Love all the shirts that have been posted in the past 2 weeks! I love how they're all so different and the various color combinations.

Thanks! My user name kinda gives me away- I am a huge Tink lover- lol.. I am trying to think of ways to incorporate the Princesses into shirts- but got the idea for Tink wings when I saw someone wearing one of those Affliction shirts!

The tank tops are all from Old Navy- which I love bc they are sooo long! The T shirts you see are all from a warehouse here in Arkansas- the brand name of the V necks is Royal Knight. However, American Apparel also makes great long V necks, and you can buy them 3 for 20 on Ebay with free shipping most of the time!

That's where using soda ash and then letting the shirt dry comes in handy.

I did a resist shirt the other night using Jacquard dyes and I skipped the soda ash -- the colors were not as vibrant as with soda ash, but the dyes looked great. I was using dark green, so I wanted it a little less rich, anyway.

When do you pull the floss out -- when the shirt is still wet or after it dries? I pulled mine out when I removed the rubber bands last night and ended up with a hole in the shirt.

i finally got a needle for my machine so here are our finished shirts. you can really tell the difference between the 50/50 and the 100%cotton. now i just need to find the time to make some for my nephews........

I do it when I remove the bands, but I cut it in several places, and am super duper gentle pulling it out!

I used Resist- it is made by tulip- I put the resist on, let it dry, and the dyed the shirt laying flat on the ground.. you can sort of see my lines, lol- just be sure you put something between the shirt layers so it doesnt bleed over.

LISA! Did you use a sewing machine to do your shirts? How on earth did you get it to cinch??? I am dying to hear alllll about it! I have a machine, but just figured it was impossible! lol- man would that save me a ton of time! And where did you get your halter? It is super cute (actually- you are super cute!) Thanks so much for posting the pic!

And hey- that was my first try, so you can totally do it! Look how awesome your cakes are- you are crafty! Maybe you should try it on a cotton tote bag or something and see how you do- I bet you will be great at it!
