Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Here are the shirts that we made last Monday. I should have used more dye but I'm happy with them!

My daughter wore hers and ended up getting a stain so I had to wash it. It faded quite a bit with just one wash (with detergent). I soaked them in the soda ash beforehand and thought that was supposed to help keep the colors vibrant.

We'll be wearing them next week at Disney World!!!

We made our shirts on Saturday and washed them out yesterday afternoon. The kids and my DH did their own and everyone did a great job and had a ball! We did 2 shirts for each of us.

I was worried that they just weren't going to come out very well but I was pleasantly surprised! I will post pics later today.

I used the Jacquard large kit(10-15 shirts) plus a Jacquard kit for 5 shirts. So basically it took kits that said 15-20 to do 4 adult and 4 kids shirts. The one large one MIGHT have been enough but my DH really went overboard with his dye and had it just pouring out of his shirt. I did have some dye left and have some tie dyed undies and a headband soaking right now.

I did soak in the soda ash for at least 45 minutes and I waited about 25 hours before rinsing. I'm happy with the results! The kids are thrilled. I think they did an awesome job on theirs! A couple of our mickeys are kind of obscure but I'm not sure if I will take a bleach pen to them or not. I think they still may be clear enough. What do you think?

I'm home with the kids for Spring break so I had a little extra time on my hands. I made our shirts on Saturday. I used the Jacquard groovy kit made for 5 shirts. Here's my experience. 1. It was easier than I thought since the directions are so good. I was a nervous wreck. I don't sew ever but it wasn't hard. 2. It was messier than I thought. I'm glad my DH suggested I do this in the driveway. I ruined a pair of crocs and a pair of socks but the rest of me was dressed in black. 3. The kit said it would make five shirts and it just barely made five shirts. I ran out of yellow for the last one. 4. I used a ton of dye - the shirts were dripping like crazy - and there is still a lot of white on the adult shirts. 5. The shirts are far from perfect but that's what is great about tye-dye. They don't have to be perfect. 6. Bottom line - I'm really happy with the way the shirts turned out and happy that I was brave enough to make them. It was a little time consuming but it was worth it. I will post pictures later if I can figure out how.

If you are debating about trying this I say - "Go for it"!!

How long did you let the dye stay on your shirts before rinsing them. I like the way they came out.

I really like the coloring of the Mickey heads on the shirts on the left side. Did you do anything special to them?

For the top one we put red on and let it sit for about 5 minutes(actually held it with the mickey pointed down so any excess could drip off) and then added blue here and there to make purple. By not putting the blue all over the mickey head it gave it kind of a marbled look. I was hoping it would do that. The other one we did the same with yellow first and then blue.

Just don't put on too much of the second color or it will all bleed together and make solid purple or green.

I'm gonna get cracking on mine and my daughter's shirts soon. If they turn out worth a crap, I'll do some for my nieces and sister-in-law because they're going with us next year. I asked my husband if he'd wear one if I made him one and you would have thought I asked him to donate a lung or kidney

My husband was about the same way when I asked him. So I told him fine then be the odd ball out :rotfl: I let him know Me and all the kids were going to wear one. I am doing a bunch of matching shirts for us. :cool1:
I sewed the mickey last night and did the winding up. I dyed them this afternoon. I am going to let mine set up for more than 24 hrs too. I am hoping for a deeper color. I even did one for our 8mo, he is going to be 10mo when we go in June to disney.

Just wanted to post a huge thank you to everyone who posted tips and pics! It was so much fun now I want to make more! Here's my mickey tees. I used dyes from Dharma and let them sit for 24hrs

Your shirts look great lindsayjs. I did mine and I think they are soooo ugly. I am going to redo them. Though after rereading this post I figured out what I did wrong. First off I made my mickey heads way to BIG and 2nd I didnt put the dye on there right :rotfl: I will redo them this Tuesday. I am going to take them to work with me tom night since I have someone I am semi training for a new lab, though he has been with us for almost a year and doing studies longer than that. :lmao: Just have to basic show him around. But he is doing all the work, so I have to have something to do. I plan on cutting out the rest of my iron ons too, so that I can get them done on tues night.
I know not to use the royal blue again either.
Did you rinse them in the washer or in the sink?
Where did you find the soda ash? Lindsayjs did you use the soda ash?
