Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I bought some tees at Target today so I can make some Red, White and Blue ones for the 4th of July.

What do y'all think - should I leave the Mickey head white, or do something else? All I have is red and blue dye, but I could walk over to AC Moore to get another color. Just looking for ideas...

I think having a white Mickey head would look good if your red and blue dyes are really "defined" so the white MH is easy to see. If you have too much white in the background, it will just blend into your MH...KWIM?

I think you should do the crystal dye method so you have more color around the MH...:) (but then I'm partial to that instead of the twist...)

Hmmm
I'm not sure how that would work. I finished my Mickey head shirts and hats this weekend always colored the Mickey head part. What happens is where you make your stitch on the fabric it stays white (and where it doesn't I used a bleach pen) So you would want to dye right on the line where you made your stitch. DH didn't use enough dye on his Mickey head so it looks like his Mickey is missing an ear. I told him it makes a great hidden Mickey.

It might be worth a shot. But I would think about doing it blue and then outline it with red and then alternate colors. In the creases and folds it will remain white depending on how much dye you use. I used a ton of dye so there was very little white in my shirts but DH used little dye and his shirts all turned out mostly white.

Also it was quite time consuming pulling out all that dental floss! I wasn't expecting that. But, I still think it was worth it. I'll try to post pictures later.

Here's the problem - when I made my color ones for our Oct. '07 trip, I tried to keep the MH white, but had no luck. For this time I was thinking that after I did the initial banding of the MH, I could cover the head area with plastic then do banding to cover it all up to make sure no spills get on it or nothing leaks through the plastic.

BUT... I really liked the swirly Mickey thing. That was cool! So, that's why I thought I might try a color. I've considered mixing the red & blue dyes for a deep indigo color, but then just having the white Mickey sounds good, too.

My biggest problem is that I can't seem to make up my mind!!!! :rolleyes1

Marshay, is the crystal method less messy?

Marshay, is the crystal method less messy?

Yes the crystal method is definitely less mess b/c you are only working with DRY dye -- you just sprinkle it on the wet shirt. I still used plastic gloves though. In fact, you really don't have to ball the shirt up much (if, at all) with the crystal method (I did though: 1st time really tight and 2nd time much looser. Both methods worked and the 2nd time was less effort since the bands were loose).

Ok, what is the crystal method. I am going to walmart tomorrow to get the items I need to do these shirts.

The crystal method is where you sprinkle the dry dye onto the shirts instead of using liquid dye. The look is supposed to be more like water (if using blues) or stone/granite (if using brown/orange/red) or just a nice random pattern of colors.

See the shirts I posted about 5-10 pages prior for 2008 and the instructions for the shirts I made in 2007 (same method, just different color shirts) on pages 17-20.

Here's a recap:

Use 100% cotton shirts only.

Buy dye in some colors that you like. I bought my dyes from Dharma Trading since they had the better dyes (more vibrant colors) and more choices of colors. I bought their basic tie dye kit which included the soda ash and then added 2-3 additional colors.

Draw a Mickey head (or other character) on the shirt using pencil and then do a baste stitch (simple 1/2" up and down) using dental floss. Knot off.

Soak the shirts in soda ash solution if you desire (this will help the dye to stick better.

Pull the floss together tightly so the material with in the stitching (ie, the Mickey head) pokes up, dye the Mickey Head (dip in liquid dye or squeeze dye onto it), and then seal the Mickey head in a ziploc bag with more rubber bands so no dye or water can get in.

Bunch the rest of the shirt in a LOOSE bundle like a pie and tie off with rubber bands. We used about 3-4 per shirt. Keep the Mickey heads poking up since you don't want to dye these anymore but they should be protected by the ziploc bags.

If you didn't soak shirts earlier, do so now (keep ziploc bags on) with plain water.

Once wet, then you squeeze the excess water out but they still need to be wet.

Put the shirt in a bucket and then sprinkle the DRY dye on top (use 2-3 colors) then put the wet soda ash on top, just enough to make the dye wet. Then you can either add more colors and put some more soda ash on (just to make wet, not a lot at all). Then you flip over and do the other side. Once done, put in plastic bag and wait 24 hours. The instructions I saw said you can use 5-7 colors

We used turquoise, baby blue, lilac and peacock blue...plus fushia red for the Mickey head for the light blue shirts (2007). And added yellow for the darker shirts (2008).

The end result is supposed to look like water (if you do blues) or granite stone (if you do browns/orange/reds) or crystals (multiple colors would work), depending on the colors you use.

I got my dyes from Dharma Trading Company, since they had over 65 colors to choose from...

This past time we did not use the extra soda ash solution when dying...we just soaked the shirts in it for 20 minutes, squeezed excess water our and went straight to sprinkling the dry dye on the shirts.

Our 2008 shirts also had the Mickey Swirl on them: here are those instructions:

Once the shirts have soaked overnight for 24 hours, then lie flat on a table and take a Bleach Gel Pen and make a mickey swirl.

We waited about 3 hours afterwards before rinsing and that was too long. Our bleach spread too much. Next time we'll probably only wait 20-60 minutes.

Rinse the shirts well and then wash in the washing machine.

We washed with a synthrapol solution to help "set" the dyes (came in the Dharma Trading kit).

Thank you for the instructions. I am going to try my hand some shirts. Thank goodness our trip is not for another year. That way if I mess up I will still have time to do more. :rotfl2:

Here we are sporting our shirts from January of 2008. DH thought the shirts were a total pain until he got stopped by CMs and other guests asking where they were bought and then having them say it was something we could sell.

Also, my two year old wandered away from us (by 10 feet) and people knew who he belonged to immediately!

OK SO I GOT READY TO MAKE MY SHIRT AND FOUND OUT THAT YOU HAVE TO DO ALL OF THE PROJECTS AT THE SAME TIME BECAUSE THE DYE LOSES IT STRENGTH. SO I GUESS I MESS UP MORE THAN ONE SHIRT AT A TIME. :rotfl2: I HAD SEEN SOMEWHERE THAT SOMEONE USED SPRAY TO DO A SHIRT, I WILL HAVE TO LOOK FOR THAT AGAIN. WHAT WOULD I DO WITHOUT MY COMPUTER. I MIGHT GET SOMETHING DONE AROUND MY HOUSE. :rotfl:

I just got done doing 20 shirts and a pair of shorts. I got them all dyed and are all wrapped up. I so hate having to wait 24 hours. I am praying that they all turn out. I have 5 more to do. Will my dye be ok if I wait a day or so to finish them? I just could sew anymore last night and needed to go and get two shirts since I thought I got enough. I am trying a multiple mickey head shirt that I am hoping will turn out good. I had bought a shirt that had a pocket on it and couldnt get the mickey head where I wanted it so I figured I would try a multiple head one. It wont be a swirl design but sort of a weird mix. Will post pictures tomorrow or the next day.

Ohhh, can't wait to see how they all turn out....especially multiple Mickey. I've been considering trying that out!

I saw some real cool multiple Mickey shirts at WDW last October. It had one larger MH and a few more smaller ones scattered about. If I remember correctly, the tye-dye was in diagional lines.

The family moved on so fast that I couldn't find them to ask if they were on the DIS - or better yet, how she made the shirts!

Can't wait to see the shirt with multiples. I am waiting to do mine until I find shirts for the rest of my crew. If any of you have teenage daughter you know why I am waiting. :furious:

I hope to be able to do mine and my daughter's this weekend. I wrote myself a note to check the shirts at home to make sure they're 100% cotton before I get started. We'll see if I make it to the table or not :rotfl2:

ok my shirts are all rinsed and i just hung them outside to rinse even further. Can we say OMG I am exhausted from all that rinsing. I will post pictures later as I need to be heading out to take my son to therapy. The multiple mickey head came out pretty good. Only 2 out of the 5 mickey heads need to be touched up some.

Can't wait to see this one! :)

Just wanted to thank everyone involved with the directions, tips, pics, etc. My husband and I tie dyed six shirts with our children and nieces. They loved making them, and we got SO many compliments on our trip. Our pictures with the characters are even more adorable with all of them wearing the shirts. I would love to share pictures, but I don't have enough posts.
:thanks:
Thanks!
