Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Hi,
I followed the directions and got some cute t-shirts made. Now the only question I have is how do u get your spirals so perfect? mine are so less defined.

Thanks for any help:)

I got some of mine done... I learned the hard way you have to be VERRRY carful with the bleach as I ruined one of mine when the bleach leaked. It did you very well, but the ear looks a little funky..

This may sound like a completely stupid question....but for those of you who outlined the mickey head with a bleach pen, did you do it after the dying process?

Also....i don't have time to read through the entire thread...so what dye kit should i look for when shopping for my supplies? thanks!

Lisa

Some question that I am sure are answered somewhere in this thread. We have drawn the Mickey head, stitched around it and tied it off with rubberbands. My tie dye kit says to spiral it first and rubberband it then soak. The instructions here say to soak first then spiral. Which is best? Then the next question if you put more rubberbands around the spiral does that get smaller lines I am guessing? Do you color each section different? Looks like in the pictures here they were coloring several sections next to each other the same. Sorry for all the questions.

To answer a few questions. About supplies, I've used the Tulip kits and never had a problem. Pixie uses Dharma dyes. Dharma Trading also sell kits. I use 100% cotton tshirts. Saturate the shirt with the dye and be sure to get the dye into the folds. This will eliminate the white, people say they have to much of, in the shirt. I've used the bleach pen after the shirt has been washed and dried. Be sure to put something in between the shirt. Or you may end up with a mickey outline on the back of the shirt, as well. I've used a dinner plate in between the shirt. I spiral and band my shirts first. Then dunk them in water and wring them out. I like my shirt damp not soaking wet. Depending on how many times you wrap the rubberbands around an area, white will remain. This would be in regards to the Mickey head, I'm guessing. An inch long wrap of rubberbands, would create more white around the Mickey head. I alternate colors or put colors across from one another. You can apply color in any way you choose.

I have had better results when I soak the shirt first and then spiral it. So the order that has worked best for me is - stitch the Mickey head and tie off with a thick rubberband, soak the shirt, then spiral and wrap with large rubberbands.

As far as the sections, you can either put color in each "slice" or you can put the color over several "slices" created by the rubberbands. It depends how much contrast you want between the color and how thick you want your spirals to be. My preference is thicker spirals.

We did these this weekend. Not perfect and I have to redo the two shirts on the bottom, but I think we did okay for our first time! :goodvibes

I did my first attempt at these yesterday. I am dying :lmao: to see them. I will rinse them off in about an hour. Trying to wait the full 24 hours but it sure is hard. I am sure they won't look that great being my first time.

So I went to my local craft store today Hobby Lobby and got so confused I didnt get anything.... I saw SEI dye, RIT, TULIP and DYLLON....oh the choices obviously too many. I have heard tulip are not good bc they dont last long and are not vibrant. A lady that worked there said to do RIT bc they are darker. Also saw the tulip soda ash. I would like some opinions PLEASE :worship::worship: help me bc I am becoming too obsessive about this. I want blue and green only if that matters. I have time to order from dharma but dont know how much dye to order from them for 3 shirts.

any help will be appreciated!:flower3:

Hi,

I used Tulip dye and Tulip ash for mine. They do not seem as vibrant as the dharma dye but they work fine. I had to do two attempts but was very happy with my second attempt. You should be able to do three shirts with one bottle of blue and one bottle of green but you may want to consider a third color just because I think it looks better, IMO. I did my first shirt with just green and blue, and then for the second try I added purple and was much happier with it. Don't stress over it too much. Whatever you do will turn out just fine!!

RIT is not fiber reactive dye is PERMANENT dye so is not going to look like the tie dye.

The tulip kits are OK but the colors would look dull and eventually fade away.

If you want dye from local craft store get the JACQUARD kit, I know Michaels have it, but is a small kit, you can make probably 3 shirts, (primary colors) you'll get the soda ash, 1 bottle of Yellow, 1 bottle of turquoise, 1 bottle of Fuchsia.
If you use it wisely it will make you maybe 3 adult shirts, and for kids depending on the sizes about 4.

Wal Mart has also some Tie dye kits, always look for FIBER REACTIVE dye.

Oh i see you only need for 3 shirts, you can use the JAQUARD KIT or order the kit from Dharma, they have kits for 3 shirts, 5 shirts and so on... As for the soda ash it comes with the kit, you will only need 1 CUP enough for your shirts.

the kits are priced well but I dont want those colors. I want to do green and blue. So I keep running into how much dye to buy from dharma? wish they had a kit where u can pick your colors. so if u dont get a kit you have to get each peice dye, urea and soda ash and I dont know how much of each to get. I think maybe I am making too much of this and it is becoming more not fun as it is supposed to be.....:confused3

Oh I see. OK in that case, all you need is one canister of each. If you only need Green and Blue, (what shade of blue?)
If turquoise blue get 1 Canister of 2oz and 1 Canister of Bright Green 2oz. You can get your soda ash from local store so you don't have to pay so much for shipping since is heavy.

You don't HAVE to HAVE Urea, it would help but is not 100% necessary.
Soda ash it is, is a MUST HAVE. If you want the urea get the smaller bag.

So you would need..

1 Canister of 2oz of Turq blue or whatever blue of your choice
1 Canister of 2oz of Green (bright Green) if you want normal green
1 Smallest bag of Urea
1 cup of Soda ash, get the tulip from your local store.
1 Bag of Rubber Bands, you can get them from Wal mart for .46 Cents in the office supplies department.
1 pair of rubber gloves (you can get inexpensive disposable from the cleaning area or if you have heavy cleaning ones its ok too)
Syntraphol is recommended if you want to get it, get the smallest bottle too.

Don't get bummed of frustrated, it is fun, just relax and order your stuff, then when you received them if you have any questions about mixing them or whatever let me know..

PixieDust --

How much Dharma dye would you get to do 2 adult shirts and 2 kid shirts using 2 different colors. In other words, would 2 oz of each color be enough for 4 shirts? Or, maybe a better question is how many shirts do you think I could do using 2 colors and 2 oz of each color dye?

Thanks much!

2oz sounds like nothing, but they will go a long way. with 2oz canister of echa you can make up to 20 shirts if not more.

I don't know if that exact list has been posted already but thanks for posting that. Just added it as a new shopping list to my phone so when I'm ready I know I'll have it with me. :goodvibes
