tickets are here BUT...

Never heard of being able to pool the allowance for any of the transatlantic carriers, at least not recently. Flown with VA and Continental in the past 2 years and both were making people rearrange cases that were over 23kg (I had to do it with Continental, luckily had a spare backpack in one of our cases so I could chuck stuff in there!)
15kg is low but not unheard of, doubt I could deal with it though.. Had 20kg per person with MyTravel in 2005 and I was overweight by a fair whack but the check-in lady was very nice and let me off with no charge, though I did expect it!

okay this is from the Virgin website - i was wrong - i said you was allowed two suitcases per person with the total weight upto 45KG - It is MORE than that - it is 46KG. Many people dont know this, everytime we go to the airport people ask us how much it costs to take two suitcases each and they dont realise that you can take two each with the total weight of upto 46kg.

This year in March, there was just 2 people, we took 4 x 32'' suitcases and they weighed very little on the outbound journey but coming home we was at 87KG (Divided between 4 suitcases) and if you get a nice person, they do let you off if one weighs slightly more than another and juggles out the weight between the cases. So we still had more kgs if we wanted!

This is from the Virgin website.
Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 23kg (50lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

so thats 2 pieces of luggace upto 46KG. ECONOMY.

PREMIUM ECONOMY :

Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 32kg (70lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

So thats a massive 64KG PER PERSON...

and upper class is :

Three pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 32kg (70lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

which is 96KG each but i dont think anyone needs that much!!

Im only saying this because we got a shock when we travelled with some airline and we had the allowance of 20kg and we went OVER BY FAR!

So, if anyone with a family, or wants to do lots of shopping, i'd reccomend Virgin for your next trip!

I stand corrected - even though i have NEVER had any problems regarding pooling luggage, (as recently as last month on charter tho) this post has made me check my airline for our forthcoming journey, and even tho luggage weights vary, between companys using economy and premium, it does look like that any one piece of luggage cannot be heavier than 23kg even if allowance is greater- Hence i now need smaller cases but more of them!!!!:rotfl2:

Kx

one of our cases was 32kg (in March, return journey from Orlando to Manchester) )and had an orange 'CAUTION HEAVY' sticker on them and the other was under weight and they didnt ask us to re shuffle the bags.

We had to double check that we was allowed 2 x 23kg cases each at first because we thought it was too good to be true (plus we was meeting family and friends and they needed the info too) and we rang up Virgin twice and got the confirmation that we was allowed 23kg each suitcase and 2 per person..

We couldnt believe it, because, if we hadnt of questioned it, we would have though 'oh, both suitcases must add upto 23kg'... and i guess a lot of people would do the same thing and think that.

When we was at the check in, we again questioned it (because i still didnt believe it and was too paronoid about being charged!) and they confirmed it. I think its a bit sneaky as its not perfectly clear that you are allowed 2 pieces of luggage and each can weigh upto 23kg, with the total amount adding upto 46kg.

We have booked with Virgin for next year and I think you'll find that in the new 2010 brochure the allowance is now only 23kg per piece (2 pieces per person) - anything over 23kg will be charged as excess baggage.
This year we are flying with United Airlines and they allow upto 33kg per piece (2 pieces per person).
Perhaps airlines are cutting down on the amount of oversized/overweight baggage - can't imagine the baggage handlers backs!

picked our tickets up from the travel agent today....
VERY disappointed to see that the baggage allowance is only 15KG:scared1:
i have one case packed already (which is one of our smallest ones) i weighed it and its 16.6KG!!!!!!!!!!!
the thought of having to take 4 cases (there is 4 of us travelling, each with 15kg allowance.) with two kids and a buggy is REALLY not appealing to me!!

i asked travel agent if we could just take the 2 cases as long as we stick to our max 60kg for family and she said it wasn't an option, EACH PIECE shouldn't be more than 15

My sister-in-law is boooked with TC for later this yr she said she paid for the extra 5kg per person so now have 20kg plus 5kg hand luggage maybe you could check this out !!

Just got back from Orlando, flew with Thomas Cook and there ridiculous 15kg baggage going there was fine, coming home with 2 cases i had to pay ...............$300!!!

Coulda cried!

Going with Virgin next year with their almighty 23kg

Before we booked with BA we looked at booking with Thomsonfly as it meant we could travel from Birmingham. I couldn't believe your luggage comes up as an extra charge as far as I am concerned it should be in the price of the ticket.
