My sister and her family have Socal Select AP's that expire on 9/1/17. She will be returning to DL this June during the AP blackout, so she purchased 4-day PH's for this trip. Questions:

1. Will she be able to use her AP for discounts (e.g. food and gifts) during her trip?
2. If she chooses to pay to upgrade her tickets to Socal Select AP's, will they add on one year to her existing AP so they will be valid 9/2/17 to 9/2/18?
3. As a DVC member, will she get a discount on her new AP's?
4. She bought the PH tickets through LMT. What price will they value her tickets and how much will be her upgrade?
5. Any other better options for her?

Thanks!

1. Yes, just have CMs scan it when making purchases.
2. No. If she upgrades her APs she will pay the full price difference, they don't prorate, and the expiration date will remain 9/1/17.
3. If DVC offers a discount on DLR APs they usually have to be a new purchase, not combined with an upgrade and the regular renewal discount is usually more. I'm not DVC, so I don't know if there is a current offer.
4. She can't start a new AP year in the middle of her current AP year, she can only upgrade her existing APs without applying the value of the PHs.
5. She can move her trip to within her 40 day renewal window and get a blockout day pass on the 1 day she renews and forgo the 4 day PHs. She can not renew, use the PHs after 9/1 and apply them to new APs. Otherwise she can just use the PHs and decide if she wants to renew or lapse when her AP is up.

During a blocked out time???

Was there a non blocked out pass she could have upgraded to that would have been cheaper than buying those tickets?

The last valid day in June for Selects is 6/8. There are 13 additional days between 6/11-6/29 where regular So Cal APs are valid. I think the price for Selects was $329 last year ($319 if it's a renewal). The current price of a So Cal is $469, so it's probably $140 to upgrade the current pass ($10 more if it was a renewal.) The Deluxe is $619. If their trip falls mostly on days a So Cal is blocked, using the PHs is likely cheaper than $290.

There have been reports from APs who did not receive a discount on days they were blocked out. Have your sister check with the AP Hotline to make sure about this.

It says in the terms that parking isn't valid on blockout dates. It doesn't say the same thing in the section about discounts. That wasn't always the case for parking, for a few years there were specific dates, like July 4th and Christmas, but they've gone back to only on days the AP is valid. Of course, if APs don't scan for the discounts, standing there with the terms isn't going to get you very far. I've done it when I used a comp ticket to enter on a blocked day, but it's been a few years.

Our experience has been it wouldn't accept it. This was a couple years ago. Perhaps things have changed.

Same here. When we upgraded our tix to AP's on a blocked day, our AP never worked for discounts - the discount would not automatically apply upon scanning our AP. They did have a workaround once I showed them our block pass. Entering on regular tix not upgraded to AP that day, I would anticipate no AP discounts.

I used my blocked AP for food and souvenirs in April without being asked to show my block out ticket. FP too. However, the AP had been scanned at the turnstile. The last time I used it without being scanned was probably 2014, so it may have changed.

Thanks. So can she upgrade her PH's to Socal Select AP's during her trip? If so, how will this affect her existing AP's that expire on 9/1/17? And what would be the valid dates of the new AP's?

No. She has bought 4 day tickets. Did she buy hoppers or single park? That value will determine what she can do. Her AP is valued at $339. Her tickets have values of about $290-$335. So, her value is $629-674. A deluxe pass is $619. You cannot upgrade to a pass less than the value of your pass and ticket. So, the pass she can upgrade to is the Signature ($849.) And it will expire 9/1/17.

Is there any way to remove her existing AP's out of the equation? So that she would upgrade her PH's to new AP's that are valid for one year after her trip in June?

On her 4th day, she can upgrade to a new AP which will expire one year from the first day she used her tickets.

Thank you! How do you remember this stuff?!

No, she can't. She has APs already that don't expire until September. She can't go in June and get new APs.

This is correct. The computer will show that she already has a valid and current AP. The only way to get a new AP with a new expiration date would be to wait until 9/2/17 or later.

Interesting. I've done exactly this when I had a great promotion a couple years back.
