If I bought my tickets through a travel agent, say an agent that was really Magical and I decided that I wanted to add a day once I was at the park, would I need the travel agent to do it or could I do it at the park?

You can do it.
Once you start using a ticket, it is only connected to you and nobody else.

Further, if the ticket was purchased not as part of a WDW Resort package, it cannot be changed until after a guest arrives at WDW.

If you DO want to add a day (or any other upgrades) wait until AFTER you have USED the ticket to enter a theme park at least one time.
Then, go to any Guest Relations or ticket booth and do the upgrade.
You can even upgrade the same ticket more than once.

While yes, you can do it be aware there are some types of tickets that can not be upgraded/changed by anyone, you or a TA. As long as you don't get that particular type of ticket you are free to do whatever you want with them.
