Ticket question-pass to annual pass

HI All, We bought the DVC anniversary 5 day ticket that was offered in the beginning of the year. We are planning to go to Disney Dec 30 through Jan 10. Our orginal plan was to do a cruise in between thus only needing 5 days of the tickets, however we are now most likely going to stay at disney world the entire trip. So we need more days. My thought was to purchase/upgrade to the DVC Gold annual pass, however there are blackout dates until Jan 2 on the gold annual pass. So can we use the 5 days pass during the black out dates and then on the last day, upgrade to the DVC Gold annual pass so we are covered for the remainder of the trip?

I think that makes sense. It does in my head. Thanks in advance for the help.
