Thyroidectomy - Please help.

Small world Jessica, Dr. Shindo did my surgery as well and your are right, she is an amazing doctor. Mine was about 5 years ago, but due to cancer, but no one ever notices the scar. I recovered very quickly and never had any problems, she did a brilliant job. So, OP, if you haven't made up your mind you about your doctor definitely consider Dr. Shindo. She's at Stony Brook University Hospital.

I have a feeling that that's the doc my endo wanted me to go to, but moved to Oregon. I have to double-check.

Claudia, it is a small world! Happy to see others that are happy with their outcome.:)

By any chance is the allergist Dr Daniel Mayer? Are you seeing Dr.McLarty? Stony Brook is terrific and I put great faith in many of their fine Doctors. I hope your consult goes well and I will be thinking positive thoughts and wishing you the very best! If for some reason you or your son do end up seeing Dr Shindo, PM me my friend works in the office. I had sinus polyp surgery 20 years ago with a different doctor, and the procedure has come a long way but my results were positive and I rarely have problems anymore.

Has your friend heard anything good about a Dr. Alexander Sorin at StonyBrook? Can you ask her for me, please?

Dr. Shindo has joined our department as Professor and will serve as Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Program. Bummer!

I just called her and left a message. I will let you know.:)

He has an extremely impressive background but he doesnt seem to specialize in total thyroidectomies. I would wonder how many he has performed. I honestly would want a surgeon whose practice is entirely dedicated to thyroid surgery, or thyroid/parathyroid surgery

Nose and Sinuses – primary and revision sinus surgery, advanced and recurrent nasal and sinus infections, allergy, nasal polyps, nasal obstruction, nasal septal deviation, sinus headache and all aspects of endoscopic and minimally invasive sinus surgery.

Pediatric Conditions - adenoid and tonsil disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, ear infections, congenital and pediatric hearing loss, cochlear implants and other listening devices, noisy breathing, speech and swallowing disorders, nasal obstruction, hoarseness and pediatric tumors and cysts of the head and neck.

Wonder if HIP will let me fly out to Oregon for surgery.:rotfl:

I'm looking into a few now:

Dr. Moses Nussbaum
Dr. Alexander Sorin
Dr. Arnold Katz

Anyone ever have experience with these Dr.'s?

The major risk is risk to the parathyroid glands (and that's a doozy if they get removed or damaged)

Yep. A friend of mine was having her thyroid out, and they nicked the parathyroid. She has to take a RIDICULOUS number of pills now, to make up for what the parathyroid does for your body. I mean something like 30 a day? She also gained a HUGE amount of weight in the 2 years after that. She now has that under control, but she has to diet and exercise constantly to keep her weight down.

The only problem I had and still having are muscle cramps and I mean bad cramps. I've talked to the doctor about them and he doesn't know whats causing them. My calcium leaves are normal so he doesn't think thats what causing them. I am taking an over the counter calcium supplement and the cramps are slowing easing up. I dont want to scare ya or anything but those cramps are paralysing, stop me in my tracks painful. They feel like a charlie horse but 100 times worse. Right after surgery I would get them 5 or 6 times a day but now I'm down to 1 or 2 times a day and they are much less painful.

If your systems were normal I would strongly suggest taking cal/mag pills, b/c the combo is excellent for muscle cramps and restless leg (and magnesium can make you sleep so well). But I'd get a referral to a nutritionist from your specialist to discuss the magnesium being included (suggesting a nutritionist/dietician b/c they've taken more classes on supplements than even a specialist, but suggesting a referral so the person is known to your specialist).

I have family members in the medical field and two of them are at Mather. If he explores the sinus surgery a consult with Dr Litman or Dr Sher would be worthwhile.

Dr McLarty is a highly regarded surgeon at Stony Brook with an outstanding background she came to mind when you mentioned your consult. I don't have any first hand feedback but I will ask someone that I know that works with her what they think.
