Recently had my annual exam and the nurse called to tell me my thyroid level is borderline. She said my level was 3.02, up from 2.6 the year before. She said they did not recommend medication until the level was at 4. My GM, 2 aunts and 1 first cousin all have hypothroidism so I know it's not fun. Should I see a specialist?

sallysue --- disclaimer: i don't have thyroid problems so I don't know exactly where you are coming from. but, that said, I have been dealing with endocrinology related problems since last summer so i kinda know. i think it depends on some variables.....personally, I would say if you can afford to see an endocrinolgist then do it. Consider it a second opinion if you want. Your health is the most important, and even if the appt results in nothing more than your peace of mind, IMO, it's worth it.

i would try to research, ask friends, etc to find someone who specializes in thyroid problems. The first 2 endo's that I saw were bombed b/c they just didn't have the current knowledge of the problem that I'm dealing with. Thyroid issues are more common so you should be able to find a good one. Find someone you trust and are comfortable with

I have thyroid nodules and hypothyroidism. It can be horrible when you are symptomatic, but when my meds are right I feel great. Although I was seeing a endocrinologist for my nodules he was reluctant to put me on meds for my "borderline" numbers, so I went to see my GP and she put me on meds due to the fact that I COULD NOT FUNCTION. My symptoms; I would all asleep at work, while driving, while reading, TV, movie theaters, etc. We went to WDW and I needed to buy a sweatshirt at MK although it was in the high 80s that day. I had gained some weight but not much. I was having issues with being able to go to the bathroom (sorry TMI). My hair was falling out by the clump. Anyhow...my GP knows I normally hate to go to the the docs, so she knew something was really wrong when I showed up. I think you would know if you needed meds. For me it was very obvious that I was not well. If you are unsure, then you are prob ok. Have them continue to watch your levels and if you become very symptomatic then I would seek treatment. I hope this helps. Also..feel free to PM me is you have any other questions!! :flower3:

I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis (auto immune disease) and am hypothyroid with nodules. Go see an Endocrinologist. They will do more blood work checking for more things. You need to get your T3 and T4 as well as TSH levels checked. Then, the doctor can better gauge your situation. If your levels are changing, but you are still feeling good, it's a good idea to go see the endo now, and then, every 6 months or year to keep an eye on things. You may be just fine, but, you may reach the hypo level at some point, and why not be informed? Of course, if you can't afford it, or your insurance isn't great, that has to play in to your decision.
