Thunder Mountain refurb dates

Thunder Mountain is scheduled to close on Jan 9th and reopen May 28th.

I've heard an entirely new second lift hill...and I believe an interactive queue...otherwise no idea

I will be there during the refurb and will miss it...that is my 2nd fav ride and 2nd fav of the mountains at Magic Kingdom... and i hope that whatever it is it will be a good refurb...

Very sad this will be closed when we are there in May. My son was 4 last year when we went & he actually got to ride this & he LOVED it! We were really looking forward to riding it again

Read about this the other day and told my DD 12 and DS 6 - both were BUMMED that it was going to be closed while we are there in May! OH well, I'll just have to talk DH into ANOTHER trip!

I don't know how true this is, but I heard a few years ago that they were going to do a refurb for Big Thunder Mountain to add some elements (how much is open to debate) of the Lone Ranger movie that Disney was working on. I think it was a Jim Hill rumor listed in the unofficial guide, so take that for what it is worth.

I believe they are also fixing some of the effects like the moving rocks in the lift hill (I can't remember which lift) and the possums that live on the rail road sign as well.

We're going to be in MK on May 27, the day before the scheduled re-opening. Based upon history with other rides, is it likely there will be a soft opening before May 28 so that we'll be able to ride it?

Depends how fast the refurb goes. It may be extended or shortened.


EDIT: Just checked, and the date has now been changed to open on May 27th

click WDW page above, then hover over theme parks, and click rehabs at the bottom. It is always pretty up to date for all rehabs/closings.

a little sad...my son just passed 40 inches right AFTER our last trip in september...he was about 1/4 in short then.

so he won't get to go on it in March.

oh well...there's still 5 other things he can ride...star tours, soarin', and splash being first an foremost.

he can catch BTM later i suppose

On the bright side, he might actually get to see BTMM actually working right when he does get to ride it. And maybe you won't have to explain to him that black plastic tarps aren't actually natural features of cave walls...

I actually think my son could run the parks operation in orlando better than who they got...it's pretty simple:

you build because you love it...and when something breaks - you fix it because that is Disney.
