We recently started both DS7 and DS5 in Karate to see if this was an activity that could hold their interest. DS7 has been diagnosed with ADHD and we have just started the process with DS5, and we have found that alot of sports just don't hold their interest. The class they are in is for famiiles so it consists of kids and adults and all abilities. In the class last night we had 1 new kid, and a returning kid and his mother who had missed 2 weeks so we had not met them yet as this was only our third class. As the class progressed the instructor had the class in a circle and was leading them through the basic moves, and the 1 boy who was returning would leave the circle periodically and just run around the outside of the circle a few times, the instructor would get his attention and say _______ we are working up to your favorite move and he would get back in the circle. After the boy did this a few times the other new kid looked and the instructor and said "What is he doing?" To which he replied "Oh that is just ____, and thats why we love him!" and went on nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Then when they did get to that kid's favorite move he had him demonstrate it for the class.
This instructor just impressed me with his quick response and I think his response showed the other kids that it was ok, because none of the other kids, seemed to take notice or think that there was anything out of the ordinary with this little boy. Once class was over they all played together for a few minutes with some balls the the instructor had.
