throwing away packaging of chicken

this is a dumb question but...when you buy chicken breasts from the store, how do you throw away the packaging so it doesn't smell? I've tried storing it in ziplock baggies, and tried wrapping it in newspaper but still, a day or 2 later the whole garbage just reeks (our garbage is a big can in our garage). Any other suggestions on how to avoid this?

I learned this trick from my sil. She puts the ziplock bag in a grocery bag and puts it in the freezer until garbage day. This way it doesn't stink up the garbage.

This is it! It's what my mom always did.

Our big trashcan is outside, so I just seal it in a plastic bag and put it out there immediately.

I give it a quick rinse and then throw it in the trash.

This. I do this with any meat packaging. I throw the empty meat packaging right back into the grocery bag (I don't see the need to waste a ziploc bag on top of it, though) and throw the grocery bag in the freezer. Last night was our garbage night so I grabbed the bag out of the freezer, threw it in the trash bag, and took it right on out to the curb. :thumbsup2

If your town recycles, the foam trays can be recycled instead of dumped. I wash them out with soapy water and then throw them in the recycle bin. The wrappings go back in the grocery bag tied up and then out in the big can outside.

We keep our large can beside the garage, behind the gate to our fence. I could never have trash smells in my garage, ewww. I never notice an odor with it being outside and it's out of site. Some of or neighbors just keep theirs beside their garages in full view but no one cares about the large green cans. :goodvibes

Not all towns recycle foam. Even if it has a recycle symbol on it, ours doesn't recycle it.

OP - we usually rinse it off & put it in the outside trash. I'll have to try putting it the freezer.

I've never experienced this problem :confused3. I usually take meat packaging and place it back into the plastic grocery bag I had it in (try to keep potential leaking meat juices off my other food in the fridge) and just toss it into the trash. No odors. I don't know how if you are putting the packaging into a ziplock baggie you would have such an issue with odor ? Is your garage really hot?

This is what we do too. Works great.

Bam! I do this with any food that may stink up the joint. Just don't forget on trash pickup day.

I have this same issue. No matter how I "bag" the empty chicken package, it REEKS the next day!

Love the freezer idea! I can imagine though forgetting it ALL THE TIME. I wouldn't even think to open my freezer on my way to taking the trash outside, lol. Pretty soon I'd have a build up of plastic bags inside my freezer!

I usually just put the packaging in a plastic bag and immediately take it outside to put in the dumpster.

There's nothing worse than a rancid chicken smell!!!!!

I've never had a smelly garage from garbage.
I just toss it in the garbage.
Here in AZ, I can imagine  Our garbage can is outside, and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Must be good cans. I can't smell it when I wheel it out to the curb.

I don't buy extra Ziplock bags just to toss them. When I'm at the store, I take the plastic fruit & vegetable bags, and individually wrap of each package of meat. This way, when I open & use them, I can easily reseal the plastic bag to stay fresh. AND I can seal that bag to toss in the garbage.

I toss the trash every other day, and after I've cooked dinner, so the meat doesn't sit around. If it's the "off" day, one day in the trash wrapped up in the plastic bag doesn't seem to create that much of a smell.

Oh, and I use a step on can, with a very tight fitting seal. That in itself keeps odors in. I've noticed I have more problems with cracked eggshells smelling than chicken as they may go in the trash the morning of the off day and sit for an extra day & a half. But, I don't wrap the eggshells before they go in the trash. Maybe I should? :scratchin

Wow, this is a new one for me. Never heard of meat packages smelling once they hit the trash.

I go grocery shopping every Sunday morning and when I get home, I take all my meats out of their original packaging and put into freezer bags. I then put all the empty trays into a plastic bag (I don't tie it up or anything, it's just easier to carry all of them at once to the garbage) and then throw it into the garbage. If it happens that I have a single meat tray that I need to throw away, I just toss it right in the trash can without putting it in a bag.

Our garbage can is in our kitchen, it gets taken out every day (sometimes every other) and we've never had a problem.

Same here. I toss it immediately into the "big" trash or put it in the kitchen one if I know it is going out that night. No major issues with odor from the big can (that honestly isn't exactly rancid but certainly doesn't smell fresh as a daisy either).

I've never had an issue with smelly meat trash. Our trash gets changed every morning & goes in a small shed. There is no smell in there either.
