Thrift Store Bragging

Went into the thrift today and someone had donated a bunch of really oranate, fancy saris, some with heavy beautiful beading, marked 9.88 each. I got 2 and they're both OMGoodness beautiful. The tops weren't with them, but I picked out two that had black and gold, so I can get some material for that, and I'd likely have to do that anyway - the blouse is supposed to fit perfectly, after all, and I like mine longer than it's supposed to be (long enough to cover my pudgy tummy).

Now I have to figure out some reason to wear the saris! I'm not Indian, but I can appreciate beautiful clothes!

Also found a little formal dress, tea length with a full skirt. It was red taffeta with an overlay of black polka dotted tulle. I will cut the top out of it, pick out the zipper, make a new waist band and pair it with a black corset, then put on some black mouse ears. It has a huge sashy thing that I can make into a bow to go on my mouse ears. I'll even dig out some of my favorite antique white gloves.

Not so sure I'll ever wear it to MNSSHP, but I bet I'll wear it to other Halloween festivities!

Wow sound like you got a great deal. FYI I went to a hand made store, that had used "antique" blankets from India to make these beautiful jackets. However that "beauty" came with a $400 price tag. $10 sounds much better!!!

Not to be a downer, but wearing a sari when you aren't Indian is found offensive by many people (issues of cultural appropriation) BUT I buy sari fabric all the time in our local "little India" which I serge to make play silks for the kids, dress up clothes, smaller scarves, fabric giftwrap, and, yes, some simple things for me. My favorite projects are sari wrap skirts and just sarongs (it's funny, though, that sarongs aren't considered cultural appropriation, maybe because SO many peoples have done the exact same thing over the centuries?). On the plus side, the wrap skirts and sarongs are much easier to put on than a proper sari would be if you're not familiar with doing it already. That

Me too. I collect old fashioned glass things, like you would have found in a depression era diner (or depression era bag of flour), and I have a large stock of used once flower girl dresses for my daughters to dress up in. Also got them used Catholic school uniforms for Harry Potter costumes. I haven't been as lucky finding things for myself, though.

Two of my best friends are Muslim, and I go to a lot of their family events, and always have to borrow a sari or other traditional outfit from them. I've been looking to buy one, but haven't had much luck- I never thought to check the thrift store for one

I grew up with many people of Indian descent, and they never would have thought it was bad if one of us wanted to wear a sari. Must be certain areas.

I always wished I was brave enough to wear them, b/c I think they are just about the MOST beautiful articles of clothing a woman can wear.

GREAT find! I pretty new to thrifting, but I must say I'm a convert & now make it to my local thrift shops at least once a week! I started going looking for inexpensive suits/jackets to wear to when showing my dog at dog shows--they're going to get dirty/full of fur so I'd prefer to not buy new--and I have gotten quite a few very nice nearly/if-not-brand new jackets for little money. (So proud of myself! hahaha)

Now in addition to looking for show clothes, I search out for fabrics & sewing notions. I've gotten vintage-never used zippers for $0.49! I pay $2.00 at Joann's so this is a STEAL in my book. Gotten some great deals on yards & yards of fabric as well!

This week I picked up a pair of Mickey & Minnie salt & pepper shakers!

Went to an an Indian wedding (in India) and the families were beyond happy that we wore sarees. (Ok technically I wore a salwar to the wedding, but I wore a saree to both receptions.) Perhaps it is a regional or even personal thing

OP I love my sarees. I've worn my silk one a couple times for cultural presentations at schools. I also got an inexpensive (though not as inexpensive as yours! polyester one in the bargain in at the saree shop. I use that one in let the girls try it on. (Yes, I know young girls do not wear them in India.)

If I ever had a formal event to go to- would definately consider wearing it. It's a gorgeous aqua colored silk. There are several ways to wrap/fold them- youtube, of course, has many videos.
