Three Things...Gratitude Thread

I'm taking a break, lounging in my bedroom...
My bathroom. It's en suite and only DH and I use it. I love not sharing one bathroom with 2 other adults and an 8 year old.

My pictures of DD as she grew up. Lots of small pictures, many of her dancing. They all make me smile.

My printer. We over-ordered at work so I was told I could bring one home. So much easier to print wirelessly from my room than to have to run downstairs and plug into the printer in DH's office (I can't get it to work wirelessly), or save things and print them out at work.

I’m sitting in the commons area of DD17s dorm floor.

DD17… I know nearly all parents go through some version of their kids leaving home, but I’m grateful for these little moments left where I’m getting to see her today.

All DDs stuff… I’m grateful it all fit in my vehicle and that the move in crew took it all up to her room. Well, everything but her tv. That’ll be one of my last chores of the day.

All of the other people around me helping and being supportive on this exciting but challenging day.

Things in my direct line of sight right now:

1) My dog- never far from my side and a source of constant love and companionship.
2) My bed- I’m taking a little midday siesta.
3) My new bathroom- After months of a crazy remodel I finally have a beautiful new bathroom. The shutters just went in and it has cooled down the entire bathroom and bedroom so much. Super grateful for that in the Texas summer heat.

There's a major university near me and I saw many, many students with their parents shopping and getting moved in today. I know it doesn't help, but you're not alone and I hope it's a wonderful experience for all of you.

Thank you! I take it as a good sign that DDs side of her floor is Disney themed. Not sure about the other floors, but the other side of this one is Nickelodeon. She was placed on the correct side!

Look around where you are right now, and list 3 things you can see that you're grateful for...

Rain! After a couple of very hot days, the rain is refreshing, especially for the garden.

The old pine table, I'm sitting at right now.

Books, book, books!

A glorious perfect Northern California day- not too hot, beautiful blue sky, gentle breeze. I grew up here, this is what I love. People say, "But you don't have seasons", but we do, they are just very subtle.

My beautiful swimming pool. I feel so lucky, but I did work very hard for it, 60 hour weeks 50 weeks a year. First day of school (teaching my 2nd career), and I decided to come home early and take a relaxing float (I was going to say swim, but really, I just relax EVERYTHING and float). The kids were sweet, but I'm tired (at 75, shouldn't I be? Anyone who has taught, at least elementary school, knows you have to be "on" every minute. Phew! Torn between a float and a nap!)

My sweet little dog trotting out to his run. Since my husband and I are both semi-retired, he is not used to being home alone all day, another reason I came home early. (DH had grandkid duty today since DS and DDIL are in teaching and had work days today with no school yet for the boys, so he was gone much earlier than usual. Even when he was working, he never left till at least 10am, while I never left later than 6am, while today we BOTH left at 6.)

My DH: It is just before bedtime and we are winding down the day re-watching Psych. We are big fans of re-watching TV series that we have enjoyed in the past. It’s very relaxing and we can pause and talk, look at our iPads, and not have to pay attention to the TV exclusively.

My large Mickey Mouse cup of cold water. I received 4 of these cups from a co-worker years ago and they are my favorite.

A little blue chair from a Fisher Price set of a table and chairs that friends got us when our DD turned 2. They said it would come in handy for years and they don’t know how right they were! Now our DGD uses it and I have used this little chair as a step stool many times. It has remnants of stickers that my DD put on it over 30 years ago and also stickers that my DGD put on it in the last few years. Wow! That’s a lot of sentiment for one little blue chair!

I'll start with creamsicles! I've always enjoyed them, but as DD got older we stopped buying the frozen treats on a stick. Guess what? The resident 8 year old thinks these are amazing... and fudgesicles, too!

In the stupid mascot category, we have Otto the Orange, the mascot for Syracuse University. DH got his PhD at SU, and we lived in Syracuse for 5 years (1986-1991). At first we didn't understand "Big Time" college sports and how they can implicate life in a city, but we learned quickly when the city bus schedules changed (without notice), canceling routes so busses were available to bring fans from parking lots to campus. We were grouchy for the first year, but by the end of that hoop season, we watched SU lose the National Championship by 4 seconds and were hooked. Now, every time I see that Stupid Orange, I am flooded by memories of attending basketball games with friends, sitting in our seats (yes, we got season tickets) and rocking the Carrier Dome with 65000 of our closest 'friends' for football, and hosting/attending all kinds of pot lucks and tailgates with friends, both before and after games. Turns out being at SU was good prep for our 4 years at Michigan State! I'll always be a Syracuse fan, though- GO ORANGE GO!! (and yes, they finally won a National Championship in basketball, many years after we moved on).

Leaves in fall. We have spectacular fall colors here in New England- not just red/orange/yellow, but colors that BLAZE!! It's making me sad to see the occasional orange leaf right now as I'm not ready for summer to end, but by October I'll love seeing those gorgeous, bright orange trees everywhere!

What can I see . . .

A/C vents, currently blowing out nice cool air.
My iPad, that I am using to converse with all of you
My Mickey Mouse Balloon throw pillow. I 💕 Mickey balloons and love that I have a permanent one. (I did trim that thread on his nose though.)

My DD20 and I are in love with these pillows.
I love the color of yours - thanks for posting your picture :goodvibes

Happy HUMP Day Friends!

#1 - My DD20’s College Softball Uniform (colors are orange, white & black) - She may be retired now, but I still love looking at my pictures of her playing.

#2 - Orange Jello - I’m going to make myself some orange jello with mandarin oranges tomorrow - it’s so good!

#3 - Cheetohs - I consider them orange, even though many consider them to be yellow. I love eating Cheetohs with a peanut butter sandwich. I could eat the whole bag, so I just put a small amount on my plate and put the bag away. It’s always a happy day when I open a fresh bag - yummy!

*Creamsicles were a staple in our house! Loved them so much and have fond childhood memories about them. Can't enjoy them now because of diabetes, but the memories remain.

*My mother really enjoyed decorating very simply but with fall colors in mind. I love the orange hues of the fall season and have lots of her old decorations around the house to remind me of her.

*Mums too! I love mums and I love the colors they show.

I also enjoyed Creamsicles as a kid. Orange Julius's too.

Amen to orange hues in sunrises and sunsets.

I enjoy using colored flair pens in cards and notes, orange included.

Memories of a young preschooler whose favorite color was orange and likewise with a late elderly church friend.

Dad and I God willing have an orange plastic envelope filled with Hidden Pictures and Word Searches to enjoy doing on our Disneyland trip next May.
