Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Good Sunday Morning!

#1 - Mental & Emotional Strength - My Grandma was the matriarch of our family, and when she passed away, I feel that that torch was passed to me. I love my mom, but she does not have the same mental & emotional strength my grandma did. My grandma taught me well, and I’ll happily carry that torch until my last day. I believe I taught DD21 well and she’ll pick up that torch when she needs to.

#2 - Life’s Little Lessons - My Grandpa was awesome for this. There are so many things in life that I can go back into my memories and say,…my grandpa said or my grandpa taught me.

#3 - Fun Activities - My Grandpa taught me more than life’s lessons. He taught me how to play pool, ping pong, fly a kite and play certain games. He’d always go on long bike rides with me. He did not like kids sitting around watching mindless TV, so he always did things with me and I’m grateful he did.

Grandpa Sam truly was my first human witness to Christ in the quietly kind way he lived. Grandpa loved and wanted everyone to be happy.

Grandma Dolores was a spitfire who was fiercely loyal to those she cared for and loved.

I've also been blessed by God to have had some elderly church friends. My late friend Sue who passed away at 100 was a wise and encouraging Shirley. Another late friend in her 90's Shirley and I had such fun going together to Hobby Lobby and lunch. Finally, to make this share have three people in it, a late elderly friend Mary was a character all her own. She could be front and center but also took the care to seek out someone new at church for example and sit with them or invite folks who may not have had plans to enjoy a friendly group Thanksgiving at her house.

Didn’t know my grandparents they lived very far away and I only ever met them maybe 3 times in my life -

My beloved Aunt - she always had such fun things for us to do and was a rational guiding person !!! She was my dad’s older sister and she didn’t mind standing up to my father if she thought we needed something !! I miss her so much !!

The lady I used to babysit for - very strong minded women who taught me a lot about life as an adult !! She also taught me to drive - she dud a lot if this going through a divorce and never once would you know she was in a difficult situation!!!

A woman I used to work with - she was much older than me - close to retirement- but the strength of character she had was amazing !!! She was the nicest person you would ever meet and in the 30 yrs I knew her I never once seen her get mad !!
I miss her very much !!

Grateful to both my grandmothers for establishing and encouraging traditions in our lives.

Grateful that I got to meet my great-grandfather when I was old enough to remember.

Grateful for an older couple who lived next door to us and treated all the neighborhood kids like bonus grandchildren.

My mom’s mom was a great cook, warm and caring, and always said yes when the ice cream truck came around! (My mom always said no) :) I can still see her blue wallet, giving me money for ice cream.

My mom’s dad was a bit stern, but he loved music and played the violin very well. We played Christmas carols together at many family gatherings, him on the violin and me playing the piano.

My Italian grandparents on my Dad’s side were much older when I was growing up. But I do remember their house in Brooklyn and the bicycle store that my grandpa owned. (They lived upstairs) The smell of delicious Italian food (the kitchen was downstairs, of course, IYKYK), mixed with the smell of rubber tires is a strong sense memory of mine. I loved hearing my dad talk on the phone with him in half English and half Italian.

Good Monday Morning!

This is a tough one……

#1 - DD21’s Christmas Tree - I decorate it with black garland, which is not normal. Black & Christmas Trees are not a normal combination. It’s a Chicago Blackhawks Christmas Tree, so it has black garland and red & white lights - it’s super fun.

#2 - My Mom’s Dog Collar & Leash - She always had females, and her favorite color is blue, so her dogs always had blue collars and leashes. Since we are all so accustomed to having blue = boy, everyone would ask her - What’s HIS name?

#3 - Bacon on Donuts - NEVER did I think this would be good until I tried a maple & bacon donut from a local bakery and OMGosh, it was incredible.

Shorts and sweatshirt - I’m always cold on top but not so much on lower half - often wear shorts and sweatshirt or jacket - frankly what’s the difference than wearing a skirt ???

Sneakers with my dress clothes - when I worked in corp America I often wore sneakers to work - I was suppose to change to dress shoes but often didn’t unless told to 🤣🤣

Apple pie with cheddar cheese !!! It’s delicious!!!

Good Morning friends:wave:

This is a hard one indeed!

Dear WDWEPCOT, I'm not a dressing up fan really especially of shoes. God willing one day when I am back to normal and able to go to church again in person, I will most likely wear nicer sneakers for shoes.

I will put my thinking cap on for more answers.

Have a great day, everyone :)

Grandparents (I'm going through all 4 ☺️)-

Grandpa C- He was a jeweler. He retired before I was born, but he still had all kinds of project he'd work on in retirement and all kinds of pretty baubles for me to look at and play with (under supervision). There were times where it felt like I was playing with a pirate's loot. I loved it.

Grandma B- She was amazing with food. Her pies and homemade candies were legendary. She was the first person that really showed me that you can do these things at home and make them taste even better.

Grandma F- The lady had style! She was always so well put together and had all of these incredible outfits, shoes, bags, coats, etc. While I'm not as into getting dolled up these days, it taught me how to do it right when I do. Plus, it was so fun playing dress up in her closet.

Grandpa B- Both of my grandfathers served in WWII, but Grandpa B saw some of the worst of it. He started out in north Africa, landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day, he fought in the most awful battles in Belgium, and he survived it all. He was a changed man after this and it haunted him for the rest of his life, but we are eternally grateful for his service (as well as Grandpa C and all others).

Unlikely combinations-

Seeing Slo's post reminded me that a local BBQ place recently had buttercream filled, maple glazed donuts topped with pork belly. I haven't tried them yet and they're not on the menu every day, so I can't be grateful for them YET!

Birkenstocks- When I was in school, they were lazy day sort of shoes that people just threw on with a pair of jeans, sweats or pj pants before the weather got too snowy. Like the sneakers and dress clothes, I love that Birks are now something people use to add to cute dressy outfits.

Thanksgiving sandwich- most people are on board with the more savory offerings, but there's just something so interesting and tasty about blending in the sweetness and the tartness of cranberry sauce with the rest of the holiday flavors.

Cheese and sweets- I generally think of cheese as a more savory food, but it goes surprisingly well with fruit and chocolate.

Unlikely combinations...

I'll start with Chucks and Pearls, because it's almost election day. No matter who you support, VOTE! Hundreds of thousands of people gave up their lives so you might have this privilege!

Crocs and dresses- Crocs are all I can wear, so regardless of the event I'm attending, I end up in Crocs. I wore my black dress shoes to DD's wedding and made it through the vows before I had to change to my Crocs. Wore my little blue flats to my 50th high school reunion, and made it through cocktail hour before changing to my Crocs to stand in the buffet line. My feet/ankles/knees/hips don't align well enough for me to wear anything else!

Strawberry jam and scrambled eggs. I like to put the tines of my fork into a little raspberry jam before taking a bite of scrambled eggs. No idea why, just something I like!

I always loved potato chips and vanilla ice cream. Now, when the mood strikes, I substitute cottage cheese for the ice cream. Not as good, but a little more diabetes friendly.

Speaking of cottage cheese, I always got made fun of for putting ketchup in my cottage cheese. Really, it’s not too far off from tomato sauce and ricotta :)

My interests have sometimes been perceived as odd combinations, like loving classical music and sports, or Disney and dystopian books and music :)

#3 - Bacon on Donuts - NEVER did I think this would be good until I tried a maple & bacon donut from a local bakery and OMGosh, it was incredible.
This is so true! I love this combination as well. I even like a little bit of jelly on my bacon. I have to admit that when I am eating out for breakfast I try not to be too obvious when I do this combo.
Apple pie with cheddar cheese !!! It’s delicious!!!
😲 You gotta explain this combo. Is it warm apple pie with cheese right out of the fridge? How do you prepare this? I might have to try this out.

You and me both. I did this when I was in grade/high school.

You can do the apple pie warm right out of the oven ( after it’s set of course ) and just put a slice of cheddar cheese 🧀 on it - no need to melt the cheese - just a average not too thin but not thick slice of cheddar cheese ! So delicious
Trust me the first time I was offered this I thought it was gross but I tried it and fell in love with it !! I prefer it on warm apple pie ! I don’t care for ice cream with my pie so not sure how that would go if you have the cheese on it .

Unlikely Combos

I second sweatshirts and shorts. - It was basically the spring uniform where I went to college.

According to my DH, the facts that I let my pancakes/syrup and eggs be on the same plate at breakfast.

I sometimes have two wildly different books going at once.

Good Tuesday Morning

#1 - Medical Info - I’m really grateful how hospitals and doctors put all your info on online patient portals today. It’s always nice to get test results before you see or talk to the doctor.

#2 - Travel - I’m super grateful with how I can get directions for anywhere and have the map speak the directions to me. For someone that gets lost easily, this is a wonderful thing. I also like being able to book hotels online - it’s nice to see the hotel before I get there.

#3 - Streaming - I’m very grateful for streaming TV shows so I don’t have to sit through commercials. It’s hard for me to watch normal TV now, and I don’t unless it’s the local news. It’s also nice to stream movies - so convenient. No more renting movies from a place like Blockbuster - that seems like forever ago that we all did that.

DIS ❤️❤️ Disney info and making new friends - I’ve made so many wonderful friends from the DIS !!!

Google - wealth of information- how to do things / look up that song your trying to recall / medical information / shopping - is that online site legit - google it !!

Online Banking !! - love online Banking and bill paying !! No need to hope the US Post gets it there ( mine is horrible ) you can take care of it yourself !!!

Good morning friends:grouphug:

Online worship has been such a blessing since the start of Covid. God led me through a Disboard friend to a wonderful church. Even though I am across the country, it means a lot to me to be able to join in worship from this church every Sunday.

Streaming movies on my Kindle has truly become a blessing to me as I recover from my feet trouble.

This very thread along with the kindness thread mean so much to me to be able to check in on daily because all of you are dear to me.
