The 3 Hero’s & Helpers I’m Grateful For….

My DH who is a retired volunteer firefighter and EMT. He’s saved a lot of people’s property and many people’s lives over 15 years. Nobody realizes how demanding this job is - these men and women have their careers and then do this when they are home. They are never home, miss out on family activities and holidays, put themselves in danger and etc. My DH used to get $11.00 a call - he wasn’t doing it for the money - the pay was very very little. God bless them all - their sacrifices are monumental (and so are their families that rarely see them and moms (like myself) that are almost like a single parent because their spouse is rarely around to help)

The Chiropractor I work for that has been treating my DD19 with all her sports injuries (and she’s had a lot) at no charge for 8 years. He is on her speed dial now that she’s at college and he ALWAYS gives her advice, X-rays and treatments whenever she needs it, and as much as she wants it. He’s been an incredible blessing to her and us.

Definitely our veterans - America wouldn’t be the same without them. God bless each and every one of them.

Good Morning friends and I thank you all extra for your shares today. I was touched by them all!

3 Heroes or Helpers You're Grateful For

1 Jesus is my Hero forever!

2 As others of you have said all Veteran's and their families both past and current along with undercover angels both human and critter here on Earth and in Heaven.

3 I also agree with others who have said all delivery people right now. I feel so badly always for very late-night mail carriers especially. I also feel badly that not at all carriers are well supported in their area.

@lynxstch, so happy I read your post because
#1. Our handyman, Keith! There are so many things we can’t do any more, and it’s comforting to know we can call him to get help!

2. All veterans.

3. Healthcare workers who have worked during this pandemic.

A heart felt Thank you from me and Tom

Today's Topic - 3 Things You've Been Grateful to Know

(things you learned in school, skills you were glad someone taught you, things you learned as an adult and don't know how you ever did without... whatever)

1) the manual alphabet - I had a classmate as a kid whose sister used it, so she taught a bunch of us. It came in very handy years later when I was teaching.

2) how to use tools - I had a woodshop class in junior high (part of a pilot program to get more girls to take shop and more boys to take home ec.) It gave my confidence that I've been very grateful for as a homeowner.

3) random animal facts - I'm watching one of those Saturday morning educational blocks (inspiration for the topic) and remembering how many of them DS and I have enjoyed together over the years.

Happy Saturday DIS Friends….

So many things I can list with this topic:scratchin

Since I’m spending my day at a Lay Minister conference at my church today (I’m a Lay Minister) I will start off by saying that I’m grateful to have learned how to be a good public reader so when I lector at Mass, I can help people stay engaged with the Mass. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, and I’m always grateful that our priest at the time asked me to do this. and I’m even more grateful that God gave me the encouragement to say yes to him.

I’m grateful to my DH, who has taught me how to cook, recently how to paint a room and other things. I can live without knowing how to pain a room, but learning how to cook is a great and necessary life skill (at least I consider it to be).

I’m grateful to my grandma who taught me how to be tough & strong, how to always hold my head high even on days I don’t want to, not to whine about things and etc. She was the strongest and toughest woman I have ever known and because I spent a lot of time with her, she instilled these traits in me and I am forever grateful.

(things you learned in school, skills you were glad someone taught you, things you learned as an adult and don't know how you ever did without... whatever)
1. How to cook and bake. I started baking with my mom as a little girl. I learned to cook out of necessity, as my dad wasn't home all the time, and I needed to eat, when it was just the two of us. I've learned many things from my career in restaurant management (can't manage someone else's job if you don't know how to do the job yourself). I still push myself to learn new techniques; how to make different things; expand my palate, etc.

2. How to touch type. I was pretty good at it on a typewriter, over 100 wpm. Still pretty good almost 40 years later. LOL

3. How to play the piano. When I was a teen, I learned how to play between a class at school and muddling around at home (dad inherited grandpa's player piano). I had 5 or 6 songs I could play perfectly; about 50 or so songs really well; and could muddle through quite a few more. Couldn't do the big concert pieces, as my hands are small, and I have never been able to reach a full octave. (did I explain that right?) Then I stopped playing when I had DD#1 (no more piano access); and didn't play again until DH bought me a keyboard last year, so 30ish years between the two. I am not very good at it anymore; I can't play for long periods anymore, as my fingers lock up, and the joints ache. But I still mess around a few times a week.

3 Things You've Been Grateful to Know

1. How to cook and bake. Thanks to my great grandmother (mostly), and my mother, I had a good set of skills to use when I got married.
2. How to use tools, and fix things on my own. Sometimes I need the help of a you tube video, but I have fixed so many things that have saved us $$$ repair calls
3. How to do all kinds of needlework. My great grandmother taught me how to knit, crochet, and tat (which is a lost art now). I cross stitched for many years, and made a lot of gifts doing that, from pillows to photo albums with custom made covers, baby and wedding samplers, etc.
4. Had to add a 4'th--like @Bianca and Bernard -- I also know how to play the piano. My grandmother was a classically trained pianist. She was a piano teacher for many years. I can still sit down at a piano and play a few things I learned eons ago!

How To Read ❤️
How To Cook
How to do minor repairs and things around my house that others would hire someone to do - painting / wood refinishing / flooring installation etc
Bonus - Teaching others they can do these things too ! Showing them encouraging them !
It’s very shocking to me how many people who do not know how to cook
In my job I deal with a lot of young people - they are clueless in handling their personal finances - since that is my job I’m often teaching them small things they can do to manage their finances - I believe this really needs to be taught in school as these kids are just not learning it - just my thought YMMV

Gardening and caring for house plants. Plantings have enriched my life and I’ve shared them with others. I love hearing about the gardening both of our sons do. Friends send pictures of their gardens and plants so we have these common interests. I have Lilies of the Valley that have thrived from plants in my four house gardens. I began with a few from one friend and I have shared them with many others.

So many people have trouble with math. I was a math teacher and college professor. I’ve taught advanced placement calculus and basic skills math to elementary schoolers and senior citizens. I love those “Ah ha moments” and the smiles. I understand though that I am not always successful, but that it’s important to reassure the person that I know I don’t have all the skills to help everyone. I encourage everyone to seek out someone who can make them understand when I have failed them.

I have known kindness and love from DH especially and so many relatives and friends.

My college roommate could do that! I still have a couple of lace doilies she made me. - I think she learned from her grandmother too. :goodvibes
I don't know of anyone these days that still does it. I think a lot of people years and years ago did, but to me it's really a lost art form. I have 2 tablecloths and a bedspread, along with many doilies that my great grandmother made, those are among my most treasured items

3 things I am glad to know

1. That my family are all believers
2. Cooking - although I learned it on my own. Anyone remember the Betty Crocker Junior Cookbook from the early 80s lol?
3. That my DH will stand by me through even in the absolute worst of times and when I don't deserve it. 💔

I have Betty from the 70s used it last night best cookbook ever !! I also have another non Betty from the 40s another good one !!

Edit - my Betty is held together with Duct Tape - a lot of pages are worn thin from use !!

3 Things You've Been Grateful to Know

1. Reading
2. Harmonizing/singing. I actually already mentioned this on this thread for "little things" but it's really not a little thing. My mom used to play piano for our church when she was pregnant with me and when I was a baby/child. I credit this wiath being able to almost instantly harmonize to any "hymn-like" song.
3. Swimming

I'm sure there are more/better answers to this one, but these are the main ones I could come up with for now.

Today's Topic - 3 Things You've Been Grateful to Know

1 The love and steadfast presence of God and I pray being able to serve/witness with joy.

2 Love of family including our dog Champ who is now one of God's canine angels.

3 Kindness of so many including strangers

As a 4th definitely how to read!
