Three Studios or a Grand Villa?

We are DVC members and we have a lot of relatives that want to go with us next year to WDW. I don't mind taking them, as a matter of fact I think it will be fun!

My question is on lodgings. Is it better to get a Grand Villa for one group of one adult and two children, another group of one adult and one child, and the third of two adults and two kids, or should I just go for three studios?

The points work out better if I go for studios, since we'd have three studios and enough points for all three. (294 for three studios at OKW vs 439 for a GV at OKW) Has anyone else gone the studio route or is it considered better to go for the GV?

TIA!
Karen :flower3:

It's easy to cancel a studio if someone backs out.

Would you be OK with the Grand Villa just for your family if that's what ended up happening?

I think the GV would be awesome, but I wouldn't do it if I had to borrow points. Have you considered a 2 bedroom and a studio? It would be nice to have a living room & kitchen area for group time and nice to have the separation in case someone needs a little space.

Enjoy - sounds like a fun trip!

A 2br and a studio would be my recommendation also, I did a GV my last trip just to “do it once” but unless I had points to burn I am not sure I would do it again.

Plus the in-room laundry in a 2BR would be a plus for your family/guests. It's sad :sad1: but the W/D is so important to me now.

We are doing a similar trip this year and are doing a 2 bedroom and a studio. Looks like you are going during Dream Season? If so a 2 bedroom and a studio will cost you 361 which is still significantly less than the GV! I for one really like having the full kitchen and I agree with pp... I LOVE having the laundry!

Not bad, but if my MIL comes along I would rather be the one stuck in the studio! This is going to be tricky to coordinate. It looks like it will be "Cousin" T and her grand kids and possibly her daughter, my DSIL and her son, and my DH and the boys. If DSIL goes than MIL will probably go too. :scared1:

I was thinking the studios (and I appreciate your input CarolMN) because of the ease of cancellation and the need for separation. I'm going to have to rethink that because of the laundry situation....

We have done both a GV and the 2 BR and studio route and like the 2BR/studio very much. How about putting the DSIL,her son and MIL in the studio. At OKW you have 2 queen beds so it shouldn't be a problem. If the son is young and you get a dedicated studio you can use the big closet and an air mattress to give him his own "room".

I like the idea of the 2bdrm and the studio. I agree a kitchen and laundry to use would be great. Now I am very intrigued about OKW. There is a closet big enough to sleep an air mattress. How cool is that!!! And the studio has 2 queen beds to boot. Go OKW!!

I don't think there are dedicated studios at OKW. But there are dedicated two bedroom villas that have that great big closet in the second bedroom where the entrance would have been if it was a studio.

Depending on how close you are with the relatives, I would actually suggest you go towards 3 studios. Not only are you able to save on points, each family will have their own privacy. We went in October last year and had 4 studios. Ended up being some nice "away" time from the in-laws.

Just FYI - A twin air mattress will NOT fit in the closet of any 2nd bedroom that I have seen at OKW. Possibly a pack and play might fit.

Depends on whether or not you need a kitchen and in-room laundry. If you do the 3 studios, you won't have either. If you choose the GV or a 2BR+studio, you will have at least one full kitchen and laundry available.

I would do 2 studios, just for the fact that everyone's going to have their own space.

We went in Jan. with my MIL, FIL, BIL, SIL, Niece, and my family of four. We had the 1 bedroom with a studio. I wish we had gone the three studios. Being close quarter my Niece got sick and passed it on to my DS who was 14 mts at the time and had to spend the day in the room. Being DVC members and have gone so many time we have a way of going about things. We like to be there at rope drop and they liked to sleep in. I just wished we would have thought about the three studios so everyone could of had their own space so you could break away from the group and just have your own family time. Good luck in planning your trip and hope everything goes well.

I recommend studios, because that is my personal choice. We traveled last Nov/Dec with my DH's family. We got three studios. It was my family of 4 (2A, 2C) in one, BIL, SIL and DN in the second, and MIL and FIL in the third. Everyone has different sleep times and patterns, and it was REALLY nice to be able to "get away" from everyone at night. Yes, there were 8 of us and we could have done a 2 bedroom or GV--but I really, really need to have my own space.

Everybody's different! We are very close knit family, spread out over 3 states & a continent and we all vacation together every 2 years or so, so we want the closeness and the family atmosphere only a GV can give us. All of our kids playing together, watching movies, group dinners, catching up, staying up late, all that plus Disney and a wonderful resort. What more could you ask for! Through DVC I've hosted 3 family reunions since 2000, all 3 in an OKW GV. Don't regret it for a moment and I look forward to the next one in 2011. Gosh I love my DVC, could never afford it otherwise!

By the way, you can put a full size blow up mattress in the the bigger bedroom upstairs, you just have to move the lamp and the chair! You can also put one in the living room and a single in the master by moving the chair! The more the merrier!

You could always request a lockoff two bedroom and a studio at OKW. Then you can close the door between the studio and one bedroom OR leave it open when you want the others to come in. The studio portion would have an exterior door and kitchenette of their own as well as access to the living room, laundry room and full kitchen if you wanted to let them in.

Great suggestion! :goodvibes

I'm thinking that I'll do that and get an extra studio so we can all have some separate time. DH and I are definitely getting that jacuzzi tub! I would rather put "Cousin" T in the lock off studio and let MIL, DSIL and DN have the other studio. KWIM? ;)

I really appreciate all of the great ideas and suggestions - Thanks to all of you! :thanks:

Our experience was that the 2 bedroom and the studio were not geographically close together at the BWV.

The 2 bedroom was waaaaaay down the long hall on the 2nd floor, and the studio was on the 3rd floor over the village green.

It caused hard feelings.

Yes it is important to set it up as a GG so you can get the rooms close together.
