After Kelly requested a couple of threads be stuck for camcorders and for fireworks, I began thinking perhaps I need to manage some of the thread subjects a little better to help users find the information they need.

As a photography board we get a lot of questions from users as they begin looking for new cameras or have questions about specific models or accessories. There seems to be numerous threads created asking about certain brands or models. I would like to propose starting a new thread for each manufacturer (Canon, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, or any other that are of interest). These threads could be used by members to discuss new models of that particular manufacturer and also be a place where members looking to buy a new camera may be able to find information about a specific brand. I will add a thread and stick it to the top of the board with links to each of the manufacturers threads so that users can quickly jump back and forth to various brand discussions. These threads should not be used to exclude other brands but rather to provide a central location for information about a manufacturer's product. They shouldn't include brand bashing but instead be a place where features, functions, issues, etc. can be openly discussed. I think comparisons between brands are best left outside of these threads so that it's not confusing to members looking for details on a manufacturer's gear.
I am hoping that creating these will allow a flow of information among the users without having to search through pages of posts or creating new threads asking the same questions again and again. I would love to hear feedback on this idea. You may post it hear or if you feel more comfortable you can send me a private message or an email.

That would be a great idea. I just purchased a Canon last week. I came to this board looking for suggestions on a camera for normal, every day use. Wish the thread came a little sooner but that's ok. It will help me for next time...

My suggestion would be rather than threads by manufacturer to have a thread for Point and Shoot and one for dSLR. Grouping my Nikon Coolpix 3100 with someone elses Nikon D2X in the same thread might be offensive to any D2X owners out there.

But seriously, I think people decide that they need a dSLR and then decide between a Canon or a Nikon rather than deciding that they need a Canon and then choosing between the Powershot A540 and the EOS 30D.

Just my two cents.

I concur with Mabas9395's in grouping point-and-shoot vs dSLR. But I'll go further with another group, which is camcorder.

I thought about the grouping of different manufacturers. My only hesitation in grouping dSLR together and point-and-shoot together is that I don't want these threads to become brand wars where "my camera is better than your camera". I recognize that brand loyalty is warranted and justified when you have invested a lot of time and effort on a system and I'd hate to see the threads become a holy war for one brand versus another.Jeff

I agree with Kelly. If everyone agrees up front that Canon is the best, then everything will be just fine. :lmao:

Perhaps a sticky entitled something like "sites to go to for camera reviews" and then post the links.

I like dpreview.com but I know there are more out there.

This would help everyone to go out there and see what is available and read what others have to say about the cameras.

that's right, this way people can actually see the high-ISO noise that I'm always fussing about from a certain camera brand. Okay, I'll shut my yap.

I think the stickies could include links to photography specific websites such as http://www.dpreview.com/ which can provide much more up to date and comprehensive advice on camera selection than this board can.

Maybe one for digital photo software help and advice.

Perhaps a thread on common software used for photo editing, including links to the free tutorials? I know that is a commom question as well. :)

edited to add: Dznefreek & I were thinking the same thing!

I vote for the brands threads. I just purchased a Canon SD550 last week and it would have been helpful to search through a thread with one brand instead of ALL OF THEM. This board was pivotal in my decision-making.

Would it be too much to break it down into dSLR and point & shoot within brand categories? Just a thought to accomodate both ideas into one. If that is too much to have going on, I do like the dSLR vs. point & shoot idea.

I agree with DisneyFreak92. An SLR camera is so much more different than a point and shoot!! There's a lot to learn.
