Thoughts on the initial 8/9 Dream cruise...

I haven't read all the replies yet (I will) but I just wanted to add some quick thoughts to this.

We also felt the adult entertainment was lacking. Funny thing was we went to trivia at 7:45 Thursday. By 8:10 they were on question #13 (no answers yet) and we had to leave for dinner. The girl running it was very entertaining, chit chatting and stuff. I think DCL missed an opportunity there. If she was going to make it into sort of an improv show with trivia, that lasted that long, they could have done that as an evening "show" in Evolution since they didn't have any actual variety acts. Maybe replace 1 Karaoke night with that. The first night Karaoke was very slow.
We usually have 2nd seating for dinner. Is there anything to do? Don't do bars. So the
musical show is going on and movie theatre. So far no variety or magic acts or singing groups
comedy acts?

Glad you had a good time.

Pretty much the only thing was music trivia in 687.

For me, I like eating breakfast at Cabanas and don't want to have to go to a MDR to order them. But I think what's really getting people is the lack of a reasonable explanation for their absence. It can't be because of "social distancing," if that's the case, then you'd better take eggs off the menu too. It also can't be the lack of Golden Malted Waffle Mix. This whole waffle thing is just a microcosm of the issues Disney brings upon itself when they don't provide rational explanations for their decisions/actions.
It's a fact that events in Disney World parks are often scheduled simultaneously to pull guests in multiple directions in order to moderate crowds and force people to spread out. A great example is scheduling the Star Wars fireworks at the same time as Fantasmic. Based on that I'm thinking that Mickey waffles not being in Cabanas could be their way of social distancing by forcing people to go to the MDRs for them. Since some people feel that Mickey waffles are a big part of their Disney cruise ritual it makes sense that Disney might want to use the waffles as a pull factor to get those people out of the large buffet style restaurant and away from those possible crowds. Current CEO Chapek also has a reputation for being a money obsessed corners cutter so it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that someone has decided that Golden Malted now costs more than he's willing to spend at this time.

I would have never guessed/said the location of Mickey waffles was to disperse the crowds prior to “Dream Mickey Waffle-Gate”, but now I’m convinced … lol

It’s a good thought, and makes more sense than the explanation given in another (now-closed) thread. But still - if the plan were to pull people away from Cabanas and toward the MDRs, wouldn’t DCL have made more noise about that?

Maybe I missed something, but it seems like the waffles being “MDR-exclusive” was kept on the low until people started noticing/complaining that they were missing from Cabanas.

If you really wanted to pull people away from the buffet, there should have been more hoo-ha in advance - so people didn’t have to actually go to Cabanas and add to the crowd in order to find out there were no waffles there.

And if they really wanted to spread out the crowd, they need more than just the waffles as a “lure.”

It was a very different cruise, I would even say weird in some aspects.

If I separated it into to parts - the on board experience and the experience of the two days at Castaway Cay...I would say the Castaway experience was a significant upgrade, while the on board experience was downgraded. That's the headline IMO.

Since our entire family (myself, wife, 19-yr old son, 16-yr old daughter) is fully vaccinated, the arrival at port and embarkation process, while different, went smoothly.

On board, the lack of activities really stood out. Perhaps that is why there was no paper Navigator, as it would have been mostly blank. The few activities they did have were repeated over and over, presumably to give multiple opportunities for them so that each occurrence wasn't too heavily attended. The movie theater only showed Black Widow and Jungle Cruise, and nothing else (normally, Cruella would probably have been part of the rotation). In the adult lounge for the four nights, they had karaoke twice and Match Your Mate twice. No variety acts. They did the same music trivia (80s, 90s, 2000s,) 3 or 4 times a day in 687.

Since we were traveling with a 19-yr old, it would have been nice to know beforehand that the 1820 Society was canceled (but of course, it was still advertised on the screens in the elevators). This was a big disappointment. As a result, our son just spent a majority of the cruise in the stateroom. Had we known in advance there would be no 1820 Society, there would have been a good chance we would have canceled and rescheduled.

Another thing they should have notified guests prior to sailing was that guest laundry rooms would be closed. First night, I went to iron a shirt and another gentleman was heading towards me with his shirt and knew where I was heading. He stopped and said "the laundry rooms are closed, I guess there will be a lot of guys in wrinkled shirts at dinner on this cruise". Not a huge deal in and of itself, but goes back to the lack of communication from DCL that we have seen throughout this ordeal, and in particular the last 6 weeks or so where they left guests booked on these Aug Dream sailings twisting in the wind for so long. Once they finally announced they were resuming operations with this sailing, they should have been very transparent and specific about what changes to the on board experience we should expect.

The overall reduced capacity (there's been plenty of numbers tossed around - 25%, 30%, etc) is certainly what made the days at Castaway truly fantastic. There were far fewer loungers/chairs on the beach, and spread out well. Still, there was no problem finding any. There were so few people on the beach, in the water, etc. that you really felt like it was "private island ". This was the first day, early afternoon, with good weather (second day had bad weather) ...

On the flip side, the reduced capacity made for some weird aspects. Our room was near the aft elevators. When we got off the forward elevators and had to make the long walk down the hall, very few doors were decorated, and of course, no FEs hanging. You even saw less CMs. Was very strange.

Another strange sight was the atrium completely empty in the evening. The below pic was about 7:30 pm when it is normally buzzing with activity (live music, characters greets, backdrop photos, etc)

As expected, the crew were all fantastic. Food was excellent (although, they could have used the time off to refresh the menus). I think the fact that they only had to make dinners for about 30% of the usual number of people allowed them to improve the quality and preparation of the dinners in the MDRs.

Debarkation was okay. Line to get off the ship was still fairly long - and not physically distanced. I guess they didn't care if everyone infected each other on that line and got sick 2-3 days later since we'd be long gone from the ship at that point.

And a PSA if I may,...please make sure you are taking the correct luggage from the terminal. For the second time, we had someone take one of our bags/suitcases. And strangely, neither time was it a black upright suitcase. Fortunately, they got in touch with the people who took it and they were on a DCL bus back to MCO, so they alerted the driver and he left it with the DCL folks at the Magical Express area and we were able to get it when we got to MCO.
Excellent PSA about luggage. Why people do not verify names on bags before taking them as their own is beyond me!

Thanks for taking the time to post about your cruise experience.

With all the above said, do we know whether custom orders at Cabanas is still available? For example, I like my eggs over or fried and that always ensured I got fresh cooked (ignoring the sugar issue with the scrambled too). I would hate to hear that feature has gone the way of the dodo.

Not to mention the evidently limited selection at Cabanas. Hoping they fix that in the next 78 days.

No omelette station at Cabanas. :(

I imagine they're trying to get those people who want special orders to utilize the MDR for breakfast and only offering basic (easy to prepare ahead) breakfast options in Cabanas so that people aren't standing around waiting for food to be prepared.

We always eat breakfast in the Main Dining rooms anyway. I'm paying tips, I'm going to take full advantage of it. Additionally: We have found that the breakfast in the MDR is always better than cabanas and much more relaxing.

The whole idea is to minimize movement as much as possible around the ship and number of interactions on board so it makes sense that they would try to push more people towards the sit down locations instead of something like Cabanas where you are up and wandering around all the time. Its also part of the reason they arent allowing things like fish extenders, because they don't want people wandering the halls like they used to.

Now if we could get them to up their game with the free coffee onboard... That is the real goal...
