We don't buy it. We have gotten it when it is included with our AP's, but we wouldn't buy it and have taken many trips without it.
You might want to consider an AP. Just one AP = MM, free parking (at parks), plus dining discounts (10% off at most TS for up to 4 people), merchandise discount (10% off some places), and maybe even a (future) room discount. (Probably too late to apply a room discount this trip). With a group, one AP can sometimes come close to paying for itself, especially in a place where meals can top $50 per person! One AP can mean savings $20 per meal. If you are a bigger group, AP holders can also buy the Tables in Wonderland card. It costs an additional $150, but quickly pays for itself if you have a big group. TiW = 20% off for up to 10 people at most TS. At the $50 pp buffets, and 10 people, that's $100 off the meal.
We don't really bother doing much of anything with our Photopass photos. I download them, but then we never do anything with them. If we look at photos, it is the ones on/from our phones!
In every location the photographers will take a photo with your phone.
Also, We don't usually don't feel like waiting in line for the Photopass photographers. We see some in-park characters, but not a ton. We tend to do a few character meals instead, and those are mostly take-your-own photos. Photopass makes more sense if you are really into seeing characters around the parks, and those lines can easily run 40+ minutes long. We are more interested in rides.
