Thoughts on Immigration from a Teacher's Husband

INS can't do anything because INS no longer exists as an agency. It was a post-September 11 casualty.

INS is now U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It operates under the DHS. I think it's about as useful as the TSA is at this point. ;)

Boilerplate from its website: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was established in March 2003 as the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is comprised of four integrated divisions that form a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities.

More info if anyone is interested: http://www.ice.gov/about/index.htm

I think the problem with ICE is that its focus is split in a few directions.

Really? Let me post several negative things, then say "but I know several "African Americans or Asian Americans or whatever-Americans that work hard" It then implies that the folks you are referring to negatively are of the same race, does it not? It is not the word "Hispanic" that makes it racist, it is its usage in the context of the email. That does scream racism.
Do you ever wonder about people who never seem to address the problem because they cannot get past the way the problem is being described?
That does scream tunnel vision.

The only real fact you list in the original post is wrong.

Title One does not mean 100% of the students are on the free lunch program.

But isn't it common practise in all publicly funded organisations to make sure all of this years budget is spent in order to avoid having next year's reduced?

Well first of all yes. But I have never in my life heard of any teacher from a Title 1 school complain about having too much money to spend - that the have a hard time thinking of additional things to buy because their schools are already so well stocked. In fact quite the opposite. Most of them can document $500 to $1,000 a year that they spend right out of their own pockets in order to get needed supplies into their classrooms, like pencils and notebook paper. Forget hundreds of thousands of dollars in computers that they don't really need. That would send most of the teachers I know into complete nirvana at the very idea of it.

As for free breakfast, I agree there also - there is a tremendous amount of food wasted. Alot of food bought up by the Federal Government in Farm subsidies in order to artificially support the profit margins of AMERICAN farmers. mmmmmmm - free cheese :)

But by far the majority of the Free Lunch/Breakfast program is going toward American citizens and children that are in this country LEGALLY. Same way with ESL programs in schools and Emergency Rooms in hospitals and all the other stuff. I agree with some of the points about Illegal Immigration also. I think that in today's world, it is important to know who is residing within the borders.

But this is just stupid.
The "letter" written by the "husband of an expert" is incendiary and based on numerous downright false and dubious facts.

There are important issues to be debated - but please -- you can't just make a bunch of crap up and then say "well even if it isn't exactly true, it is how I feel."

ok, I guess you can. But if you do, it is really hard for thinking people to take you seriously.

So you think it is OK to use racism to make a point? Usually if you have to use racism or other offensive material to make your point, it isn't a point worth defending. Especially when in this case, the person that supposedly wrote the email was the spouse of a public school teacher.

But the point is not trying to put labels on the problem, it is trying to find a resolution. So you think its ok to waste tax dollars in this way in order to be seen to be treating the disease when all you are doing is treating the symptoms? Regardless of the veracity of this particular email, the time is approaching when the hand wringing will have to stop and actions will have to taken. If you spend your time looking for racism, taking offence on behalf of other people, then you are not going to find a solution, all you will find is racism.

Racist, bigots, keep the names coming. I am tired of people using those words when we don't agree with what is happening with people pouring over our borders. I am not a racist. I am not a bigot. The way I have lived my life proves it. The friends I have chosen proves it. I want to know who is coming into our country. I want to know who is here. It isn't supposed to be easy to come into the country illegally. Ever try to come into an airport from an international flight without a passport? Try it and see how far you get.

Thank you so much for this, it says what I'm feeling exactly!
My family came to this country in the late 1800s. It was a long journey, a long wait and my great-grandmother had to try 3 times before she was allowed, it took years! BUT they did it and they did it LEGALLY!!! I'm tired of people saying that it's too hard to immigrate legally, folks do it every frickin' day!!

I totally agree with the OP. True...I'm sure of it. Facts about what's going on all across this country...you betcha. Racism..not so much. I'm sorry, but there are way too many illegal immigrants in this country...and the fact is that most of them are hispanic. I agree with a previous poster....get legal or get OUT! Stop with your waving of the flag of the country you came from and start waving the American flag if that's what you want to be. I've seen too much crap around here from illegal, HISPANIC immigrants and I'm angry...along with most others around here. There is a town west of here with many small factories...the whole twon and these factories are being taken over by Hispanic immigrants and the town is also being overrun by gangs...most, if not all, are Hispanic. I'm sorry to anyone who doesn't like my words, but I'm sick and tired of it all. What the heck kind of rights do ILLEGAL immigrant expect they should get??? They deserve none, they are here illegally and they need to be BOOTED. It's bad enough that so many American jobs are going to Mexico, India, Asia, etc....pretty soon there won't be a USA as there once was. The "American Dream" we grew up to believe in is no longer true for my own kids. :sad2: Don't get me started on our gov't. It's a damn fact that there are many illegal immigrants here and most of them take it all for granted and have no consideration for anyone...and I mean ANYONE. I don't consider myself racist...but when it comes to what went on yesterday...sorry, but if you want to call me that then go ahead. Illegal immigrants protesting for RIGHTS??!!! ILLEGAL!!!! C'mon people, is there something really hilarious about that or is it just me?? :confused3

I do have to agree with that post. I support immigration, afterall we are all immigrants here, but I do not support illegal immigration. I do not support people that live here but do not at least attempt to learn the language of the country. I'm all for people chasing the American dream, but follow the proper channels.

But this thread IS about this email, not just the problem it tries to bring to our attention.

So you discount everything in the OP because you have anecdotal evidence to the contrary?

[generalization on]
Remember, liberals HATE big business. But wait, now they hate small business???
[generalization off]

But I digress...

Since we heard news reports of Purdue and Tyson closing plants because their ILLEGAL workforce didn't show up, me thinks INS should pay them a visit. It'd be like catching fish in a barrel.

I'll match my anecdotal evidence against the evidence presented by a no-name, no source, no ID piece of drek making it's way through the "forward this email" circuit.

Care to share your evidence to support the email's assertions?

Sorry, I'd need to see an actual signature to take this seriously. I'm not saying it is false, but it looks like prime Snopes material to me.

With title one funds I believe it--if we don't use it, we lose it here as well. The problem with losing it isn't that the money won't be spent this year it is that next year when/if we need it we won't get it.

BTW OP EXACTLY! I couldn't agree with you more. I am so tired of being so PC that we can't see the word illegal next to immigrant--I dont' have a problem with legal immigration that is hat this country was founded on. But for all the fighting and arguing I can't see the problem with finding fault withthe word illegal.

I think that being overweight is not an illegal immigrant problem , and I am certain that many legal american kid benefiting from the free lunchs are overweight as well. it has to do with the cheap (inexpensive) food most poorer people have the means to buy at home: overly processed food with lots of fat and little nutritional value. In north america , even rich people are fat from the bad food !

As far as wasting go , I am certain as well that most legal american kids on the free breakfast programs clean there plates !

Who are you?

Ok, then lets discus email formatting, and address and @ symbols. Because this thread is about the EMAIL gosh darnt

Actually its about the message from the email. Which is..... America needs to get a clue - Illegal Immigrants want the same rights as those who are here legally... which is like you knocking on my door, and demanding a ham sandwich. I dont know you. Im not giivng you a ham sandwich. But you want the ham sandwich. And then you say.. and you know.. i dont want yellow mustard. I want Gormet mustard. Give me a ham sandwich now.

Stop trying to create an argument and why dont you have a stance on the issue. Instead of nit-picking each use of each word. Did you check my there their and they're count? Did I use those correctly?

Excuse me, but I am not the one that posted an email as fact and basis for an Illegal Immigrant discussion, then when those facts are challenged say "Oh, but look at what the email is trying to say."

:lmao:

This prefaced the letter -

"Friend of mine showed me this. And its basically how I feel about the whole Immigration thing."

Please tell me how you got "facts" out of that. I only said this sums up how i feel.

Again thats how I feel. Which is allowed to be different from how you feel.

Then why, as another poster asked, did you post an email full of innuendos and half-truths instead of simply saying how you felt?

Because i'm a terrible writer. I thought that letter summed it up. ;)

To my bleeding-heart liberal friends who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for
tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.

this is the part of the letter i found offensive. i consider myself a liberal (i voted for kucinich, and i'd do it again!). and i agree with many of the thoughts in this letter. i also would never dream of having a gardener or a housekeeper (if i could afford one....i'm poor for a liberal! :teeth: ) us poor lefties....we're not all the same ya know. ;) i even agree with the death penalty sometimes. (don't tell howard dean, he'll kick me out of the club! :bitelip: ) sorry...i just hate when generalized, judgemental statements like "bleeding heart liberals" are made.
