Thoughts on gifts for room attendants, servers, etc.

Thanks dcassetta! That's probably the most helpful comment so far. And thanks bbel for your input as well. It's very helpful to know that the kids counselors can't accept tips but can accept other things. We have two kids, so we definitely want to have a way for them to show their (and our) appreciation to the people who will be working so hard to make this trip special for them. :thanks:

Thanks to everyone else who at least tried to make their advice sound a little nice. Whew! These boards are rough...especially considering this is how a question from someone who says they're a brand new cruiser and has a total of three (now four) messages to their credit. I sure appreciate all the info and insight available here...but it may take a bit for me to work up the nerve to ask another question! :scared::joker:

On DISboards:

1) Everything that has money for object (about tips --or removing or replacing it-- or about DCL becoming expensive) attracts snark and sometimes rough comments.

2) Everything that has to do with liking or trying other cruiselines attracts "Why are you on DISboards" and "All other cruise lines than DCL sucks" comments.

But once you go past that, it's a fun and informative forum.

Lol! Thanks mevelandry. That makes sense. And I actually think it's kind of sweet how protective everyone here is about how to treat CM. It says a lot about how hard they work and how much the people on here appreciate them. I worked in the service industry for a while, so I know how important tips and comments are, and it says a lot about this community that people here are so aware of that and anxious to educate newcomers on that. I was a little surprised that my question stirred up so many passionate responses, but I'll know how to phrase my questions more carefully in the future. It's good to know which topics stir up a lot of...passion. :joker:

Don't worry, I'm not scared off. I'm glad to have found this forum. And I appreciate the encouragement. And thanks also jiminyC_fan for the DIS hug!

(Sorry...I would quote you both for this, but I haven't figured out how to do it yet.)

You have to use "reply" on the right side of my message. ;)

Hello, I always bring Thank-you cards and Lindt Chocolate. I tip extras well. Write names on the comment cards. We have spent 89 nights on the Wonder. But I had our stateroom host see my family a few years later on our way to Hawaii. He stopped us on the stairs on said "Chocolate lady Madame, my wife loved the chocolate . I saved some for her and brought it home!" So many are thankful and do remember you. Guenther was only our host once! I love to do acts of Kindness because this really warmed my families heart!!!! I am known as Chocolate Lady and it's a title I'm proud of. Enjoy your cruise.

Cash is best, good words (and comments) are always appreciated too.

Youth Activities Counselors, who possibly take very good care of your/my children, can NOT accept monetary gifts. We have offered bags of toothbrushes/paste, "good" disposable razors, phone cards, etc.

Yea I was mostly asking what sorts of gifts I can give to ANY nice crew member that I encounter. I was in no way suggesting that I won't tip the people in tipped positions with cash. It's just that sometimes some random crew member was nice to me in the hallway or something and I would give them a little baggie of chocolate. Anyway, so I was looking for other ideas to give to unsuspecting crew members that they might enjoy. I'm still definitely going to give money to the tipped positions!

I know you mean well but the way this is worded struck me as funny. Like if every time my boss was happy with me he rewarded me with a little baggie of chocolate I think I would feel like a pet dog or something lol.
