Thoughts from our 3/30-4/7 trip

I got some great tips here so I thought I'd pass along some thoughts from our trip. Happy to answer any questions as well! We had a fabulous trip and although it was crowded between a combination of touring the first three to four hours and at night and using fastpasses we never waited more than 10 to 20 minutes for anything (other than Turtle Talk with Crush, 30 minutes plus, I am guessing they had no idea this attraction would be so popular). We didn't use any touring plans but I had borrowed unofficial guide from our local library and checked out their recommended days online (didn't always stick to their suggestions) and we always tried to hit the headliners first thing upon arriving at the park.

Magical Express. Worked out great for us, I would recommend using it. We landed around 4:45 pm on Thursday March 30 and were standing waiting to check in at BCV by 6pm. Went to dinner on the Boardwalk and luggage was waiting in our room upon our return at 9:15. We were staying overnight at an airport hotel the might of April 7 and had arranged a 9:40 pm Magical Express return so we could stay at Epcot until closing. Turned out we were the only people on the bus and the driver took us straight to our hotel (we obviously tipped him well when we said goodbye, but he just offered on his own).

Expedition Everest. Amazing ride, but everyone and their brother rushes there as soon as the park opens. We arrived at AK around 9:20 on March 31, went straight to EE and got fastpasses for 11:55 to 12:55. Had to leave the park early due to a sick child and returned on April 3 around 9:10 for another try, again went straight and got fastpasses between 10 and 11. Standby lines were 45 minutes+ both times. We found that if you go and get fastpasses right away you can then go into Dinoland and ride anything there without any wait whatsoever, then return to use your fastpass. Then we hit the safari, fastpass return time was about an hour ahead, perfect to grab lunch at Tusker House then ride. I was very nervous about the backwards part of EE because that motion can make me queasy but I had no problems at all. Everyone in our group, including ds7 who is not a big roller coaster fan, loved this attraction.

MGM. My touring chi totally broke down on this day. We were in the park from opening after closing for Fantasmic but we seemed to see very little, mainly because to fit in all the shows my kids wanted to see never left us with enough time in the afternoon to do anything else in between. The day we visited there were only three shows of Lights, Motors stunt show, two of whic conflicted with our lunch and dinner reservations, and they weren't offering fastpass. So between when we finished lunch at 12:30 pm and when the parade started at 5pm we only saw Indiana Jones, Lights Motors and Beauty and the Beast, because if we had gotten into a ride line we were afraid we would miss the next show. I will need a new strategy for next time, in the meantime I would recommend skipping Indiana Jones, didn't need that many stunt shows in one day and it would have opened time up for something else. Our other problem was that shows didn't start until 11:30 or later, so although we did TOT, Muppetvision and Star Tours in the am we couldn't get a show out of the way before our 11:15 lunch reservation. Next time I will plan a cs lunch to allow for more schedule flexibility.

Soarin/big attractions first thing after opening. We went to Soarin straight at opening and the wait time for the standby line was posted as 45 minutes. A cast member told us that it was really more like 20 so we decided to give it a try, and he was right. After that we learned to ask the cast member at a big attraction at opening whether the posted time was accurate, sometimes it was but sometimes the actual wait was much shorter and it made more sense to wait than to fastpass.

Evening shows. We got a great spot for Illuminations along the water outside of Norway and a great spot for Spectromagic in Frontierland near the Country Bears, both about 15 minutes before showtime. Don't know if this was a fluke or if these are less popular places so you don't need to queue up as early. We watched Wishes on the walkway from Frontierland back to the main hub. Had a good view, but the fireworks actually seemed to go off to the left of the castle (as you face it from Main Street) so we lost the very far left edge behind the trees, but we were very happy with our view (and the fact that we didn't have to arrive two hours ahead of time). Friends watched from the bridge from Tomorrowland and lost much of the show behind trees, so beware of this area. We always do Fantasmic dinner package, I still think this is a great way to go.

Pirates of the Caribbean was closed the entire time we were there, so the rumors about a reopening for all of April weren't true (nothing was posted about it opening for Easter week). Tomorrowland Noodle Terrace was also closed each of the three times we visited the MK.

Child Swap with Tall Enough but Scared Child. We had no problem using child swap at TOT for ds7, who met the ride requirements but didn't want to ride.

Well, hope that's helpeful to someone. We visited all four parks and rode all the biggies except RNR and Mission Space if anyone has any questions.

Thank you for a great report -- sounds as though you had a great trip!

We were there from 3/25 to 4/7 and also had a great time. Yes, it was crowded, but as the OP said, by hitting the big rides in the first hour or two, then using FP's wisely, we also never waited more than 15-20 minutes.
I was very nervous about going at a peak time like spring break, but it was very manageable.

And if anyone is planning to go to Universal and isn't going to stay at a Universal resort or spend extra money for Express Plus passes, it can still be done, but arriving before opening time is essential. The first day we went to Islands of Adventure, we didn't arrive until about 1 pm and the wait times for the big rides were all at least 60 minutes with some as high as 95 minutes. On that day, we were just doing the stuff for the younger kids, but we still had to wait 30-40 minutes for rides like Cat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish. The second day we spent at IOA, we arrived 40 minutes before opening and we spent the first 2 hours going on all the big rides with no more than 15 minute waits. Even at 10am, Dueling Dragons was basically a walk-on. Later that day, it was up to 70 minutes.

I was there 4/3-4/7 and didn't think it was crowded at all! My last trip was Dec. 8 and I felt like the crowds were the same as for April. Spring Break proved to be nothing like July as far as crowds are concerned! Anyway, I agree that hitting the big attractions first is good. However, you don't have to line up for Wishes early. I always watch from main street and just stand in the middle of the street just before they start.

I can't really compare crowd levels, since this was only our second trip. But it definitely seemed a lot more crowded than our first trip last May. Mornings were still nice, but in the afternoons, many of the big rides had wait times of 60-70 minutes. I think the longest time I saw was 80 minutes for Rock n Roller at around 5pm.

But with touring in the mornings and using FP's, the longest we stood in line was actually for counter service meals. That's probably the biggest difference I noticed between last May and this March/April.

We had a similar situation happen to us when we were there last July. We were walking through Frontierland when I noticed it was about 30 min to Spectro and NO ONE was waiting by the ropes they put up. We ploped down on the sidewalk in front of one of the stores in Frontierland (not too far from the shooting gallerey place)...I think its a less popular place because it takes a while for the parade to reach that spot.

Your report was very informative and I'm glad you had a great time! One question - we skiped Lights, Motor, Action last time but are talking about cathing it this time...is it worth it?

Hi Simba's Mom! We love BCV, but I have to admit that we are partial because it is where we own through DVC. Stormalong Bay is a fabulous pool that can keep everyone occupied for the whole day--my dd10 loves the large pool and the lazy river, and ds7 can spend hours digging in the sand. Since its only available for guests at Beach and Yacht Club, that's a big reason for us to stay there. We also love being able to walk to Boardwalk and Epcot, especially being on the dining plan this trip there were so many choices easily accessible, and its nice to be able to pop over to Epcot for dinner and Illuminations and be back in your room 10 minutes after the show ends. You can also walk to MGM, but we haven't done it.

The Marketplace seemed nice but we never really checked out their "real food" offerings, just went in to buy milk and fruit to supplement the breakfast food we'd dragged along from home, to buy a frozen pizza and cookies for the kids to eat the night dh and I went to Yachtsman Steakhouse, and to use a few snack credits.

In terms of crowds, I think that it is probably far worse this week and next with so many schools having spring breaks linked to Easter. We found it to be more crowded than when we went three years ago in February over Presidents' Day week but maybe a little less crowded than when we have been in June. Mid afternoon, though, those places could be packed! I agree that I have never seen such long lines for cs restaurants, I thought that was due to the dining plan but I actually saw many people paying cash (you could always tell the dining plan people by the drinks and desserts lined up on their trays). And almost all ts restaurants we ate at were turning away people without reservations.

Hi ericafny! Lights Motors Action was my dh and ds7's favorite attraction at MGM, and dd and I really enjoyed it too. The stunts are fun to watch, and although I had read that the explanation segments of the show were a little dry we didn't find that to be the case at all. I would definitely recommend seeing it, and although our family enjoyed the Indiana Jones show I would say see Lights Motors if you are only going to see one. Herbie also makes an appearance in Lights Motors, which was brief but was a big deal to my kids. I am guessing that at busier times they offer more shows or run Fastpass (friends who went in February used Fastpass), which might make it easier to work the show into a touring plan. Also, they were still herding people in right before showtime, I just don't know where they put them. We went early because my ds was such a nervous wreck about missing the show, it was easier just to go than listen to him freak out. Glad to know Spectromagic in Frontierland wasn't a fluke, sounds like you were in the same area as us. I'll have to remember that for the future!

It was such a great trip, I still can't believe we're already home.

We were at Disney 4/1-4/7 and experienced the heaviest Spring Break crowds we've seen since 9/11!! But as was stated before, if you got to the parks before opening and went straight to the big attractions, there was little wait or easy use of FP! We had a great time despite the huge crowds. Also, EE was awesome!! Animal Kingdom had the biggest crowds we've seen since opening year!!

Thanks for the report! I was wondering about how the crowds might shift at opening with the new EE ride. Thank goodness for FP!

EE does have a single rider line that is AWESOME. All you have to do is go to the FP CM and tell them you want to do single rider. They will give you a pass and point you in the direction you need to go. Standby was 60 minutes, FPs were out until 3 PM, and we were on and off the ride in less than 20 minutes by going Single Rider.
