Thoughts and Pixie Dust Please- Updated Post 67

Glad to hear things went well keep up the positive attitude :thumbsup2
More and more women are surviving this now.

One of the women I work with had breast cancer two years ago and she kept positive and fought back after her operation and underwent the chemotherapy she's now fitter than ever and she just did the Race for Life in 37 minutes and raised over £300. She pops back for her checks but has been in remission for the last 18 months with no worries. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and I hope everything gets better soon.

Thanks for all the kind words and support :)

The escape committee (FIL and DW) have just gone to pick MIL up from the hospital :)

I think she will be glad to get home.

I came across this thread and I so glad her surgery went well.

Having had breast cancer myself and knowing many others who have had it, I can't stress enough how important it is that she stays as mobile as possible. I've seen several older ladies go downhill quickly after their surgery because they are afraid or unwilling to get up and move around.

She really needs to be up walking a few times a day and she needs to try to move her arm. Her arm on the side of her surgery will be very stiff.

She needs to try to raise it a little each day. I did this by standing next to a wall. I would put my hand against the wall and try to walk my fingers up the wall. I would go as high as I could without it become very painful. Each day, I could raise my arm higher. In the end, I got complete mobility back. I realize that she is much older than I was when I had my surgery, but anything she can do to move it will make a huge difference for her in the long run.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding recovery from the surgery. I will keep her in my prayers.

Tim - I just now saw your post. So glad to her your MIL is home from the hospital. Best wishes to her, as well as the rest of your family.

Tim......only just catching up with the Dis this week.

Really pleased that your MIL is home. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

MIL went to see the consultant oncologist yesterday. He said the cancer had spread to her other lymph nodes under her arm and they want to perform more surgery to remove them all (not sure why they didn't take them out during the first op. :confused3).
She will then have to have 18 weeks of chemo and radiation treatment.

MIL says she does not want anymore surgery or treatment :sad2: Hopefully this is just a reaction to the shock and her being scared and she will come round to trying having the treatment.

OMG I am so very sorry to hear this, Tim - what a nightmare!!! :sad2: Your poor MIL, she must be devastated. Hopefully she will feel more positive about the treatment when she has a little time to think about it but it's a daunting prospect for anyone...

My thoughts are with your family...

That's awful news Tim.

I hope you and Julie can stay positive and that your MIL will do all that is required to return her to full health. I can't imagine what it must be like to face some of the decisions she needs to make.
Best wishes to you all.

Kev

Tim, I'm so sorry to hear this. She is probably in shock and denial. Give her some time to process this latest information. Perhaps, her doctor can recommend some other ladies who have been through this who would be willing to talk with her. The worst part about having cancer, IMHO, is the fear of the unknown. I was scared to death prior to my surgery. I talked with a very nice lady who told me what to expect. Once I knew what I was facing, it was much easier.

As for why they did not take all the lymph nodes during the first surgery, they only do a sampling. Once they take all the lymph nodes, you have a much greater chance of developing lymphedema in that arm. Your lymph nodes help distribute the fluids in your arm when you sweat. Even with only a sampling, you are still in danger of developing lymphedema...just not as great a chance. I developed lymphedema about a year after my surgery. One of my arms is slightly larger than the other and my hand and fingers always appear to be swollen. In severe cases, it sometimes requires amputation. If she decides to have the surgery, ask the doctor about the possibilities of developing lymphedema and how to avoid it.

I'll be thinking of you all and praying for her.

Tim,i am very sorry to hear how this has turnt out .As others have said,it may just be her instant reaction to hearing such news that has made her say the things she has.I hope, once having time to think she may change her mind.Take care all of you, sending +:wizard:,prayers will also be sent.x.
