My mother is a young 56 years old. She suffered a major stroke 1 1/2 year ago. She and my Dad have requested to joing my DH and 2 young DS on our 4 day October cruise. She uses a cane and only a wheel chair if long distances are invovled. I really want them to go and enjoy their time but am worried about my mother. How far do you have to walk between things, i.e Category 9 deck 2 cabins and dinner, shows, pools etc. What about the day at Castaway Key? What would you suggest for the Nassau day? We were going to book the Blue Lagoon excursion.

Any help and info you could provide would be great :)

I have heard the walks are long, plus if there is much motion, she would probably be safer in the WC. My Mom does not even need a cane, and uses a walker only for long distances, but we are planning on taking a WC. There are sand WCs at Castaway Cay, but there have been some conflicting reports, some say they are easy to push, some say they were hard. Cannot comment on the excursion. Anyone? You might want to contact DCL special services and see what input they might have. You could also try posting to the Nassau thread at cruisecritic.com, but the activity there varies.

My husband suffered a stroke 10 years ago at 43 which left him with right side weakness and a balance problem. In addition, when we went on the cruise last year, he was on chemo, which made him even more tired. He did pretty well on the ship. We took the elevator whenever we went to a different floor. See if you can get a cabin mid ship, this way nothing is too far away. The movement of the ship was a non issue - his balance was ok even with rough seas. The ships have very good stabilizers.
If you can get a disabled cabin and use a wheelchair, then she should be just fine. I don't know about CC because we couldn't dock there because of rough seas, but the Disney excursions should be disability friendly. We are going back on the Magic this September 21 for our 18th wedding anniversary. My husband is finished with his chemo and is feeling much better. We hope to have an even better time this year. Hope you can too. Anita.
