It seems the usual route is to make you way to 95 and head south! We are in western NC and our friends who are driving are considering I-85 to Atlanta and then I think I-75? south and come in on the west side of orlando. Anyone have experience taking this route?

I'm visiting a friend in Charlotte area after we leave WDW and he said to definitely take the 95 way and avoid ATL. No experience myself, so that's all I got for ya.

Tough topic. But if it helps, also consider that from the I-77 and I-40 interchange in Statesville, it is 610 to the Magic Kingdom exit off of I-4.
Depending on how far West you are in NC, that may be another possibility to consider.( FYI - That makes it 610 - 39 = 571 from the I-85 and I-77 interchange in Charlotte).
We've only done the I-75 approach when we got to FL. Coming across from Jacksonville, the last stretch of I-75 to WDW (through Ocala) is fairly flat, and there seems to be more livestock farms than there are on I-95. It was a very nice drive, last time we went that way.

Atlanta traffic can be horrendous, depending on when you drive through.

Hope any of that helps.

I'd try to avoid Atlanta myself. If they're driving through late at night or verrrry early in the morning I wouldn't worry about it - but if they leave in the morning from the Asheville area they're going to hit Atlanta about 4 hours later - say noonish and that's going to be unpleasant. I-26 across is a better option IMO.

I'm somewhat intrigued by the idea of taking I-95 to I-10 to I-75 though, I really dislike 95 in florida because it seems to crawl everytime we go. I'll probably have DH take 95 south though and see how bad it is this time and then consider taking 75 back north.
