those NOT vaccinating against H1N1 - tell me why

If you are on the fence, you might want to also people who ARE getting vaccinated why they made that decision. Just be aware that the answers people give on both sides may not always be based on "fact". Doyou own research, talk to YOUR doctor, etc.

We are not getting the vaccine. First, I don't do shots. Secondly, the normal flu kills many more people in a year than the H1N1 and I don't get the regular flu shot. Third, there are too many stories of bad things happening to people that take the vaccine (like the girl who had to run or walk backwards to be able to talk). I don't want my family to end up like that. Fourth, there are many doctors that say to wash your hands not take the shot.

Not long ago, they were asking for pregnant women to volunteer to be on the test panel for the vaccine. If it's not fully tested for pregnant women, I certainly wouldn't get it!

Ummmm....oh' nevermind :lmao::lmao:

I haven't heard about this girl. Could you elaborate?

Although you asked only for people who are not vaccinating, I HAVE to correct a your misstatement.

This is NOT a new vaccine. This vaccine is produced in the exact same method that has been used for over 20 years now for the seasonal flu, and is litterally indentical to it.

And since you are pregnant, please reconsider your decision. Pregnant women, even if they are healthy, are much more likely than the general population to develop severe disease. They are four times more likely to be hospitalized, and have a unusually high death rate.

Thank you, Deb. I find myself explaining this to people in real life almost daily.

I don't plan on getting it for myself or my two oldest children because we are not in the high risk group.

I did plan to get it for my youngest DD. She is in the risk group as she has many medical problems because of the genetic disease that she has. Right now the only thing that we have here locally is the nasal vaccine and she can't have that. So, we have to hold off until the injection becomes available. I called the county health dept today and they are expecting anytime. There's a clinic at one of our local schools on Friday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the injections come in by then.

I'm just curious if the you have been recommended to take the vaccine because you have a high risk person in your household?

Ummm, Monkeybug I DID state in my previous post that I choose to make informed decisions based upon what I feel is best for ME. Not what others want to TELL me is best. My body. I choose.

Sorry you didn't catch my "humor" in the post after that! I think anyone who served in the military would remember/understand my tongue-in-cheek response!

As with anything else, we each are entitled to our OWN opinions. There is no right or wrong answer!

I'll be honest....I'm totally on the fence about it, and no matter what I do, I can't find LEGITIMATE research for or against it. There is so much out there, it's getting hard to decipher the hype from fact. I have a high risk son w/ asthma, so I'm leaning towards it, but something in my "mom gut," is telling me this is a bad idea. And I've never been like this with a vaccine before.

So then what are your reasons besides "hell no, we won't go?"

What kind of letigimate research are you looking for? The fact that it is produced the same as every other flu vaccine? That it wasn't rushed (it took exactly the same amount of time to produce this vaccine that it does to produce the seasonal flu vaccine)? That it doesn't contain mercury?

The facts are everywhere, in plain sight. Its just all the junk science out there that is making it hard to figure out.

Oh and next year the H1N1 will be included in the seasonal vax. It missed being in this year's be a month or so.

I'm on the fence leaning toward no. I think our bodies are meant to catch and fight off viruses to protect us from future infection. Do vaccine antibodies last forever and perform in our bodies like catching a disease and fighting it off (long term)? IMO, most cases are mild and people recover. Yes some will die, but not most. I do not get the regular flu shot either and have not had to flu to date.

Yes, yes, and yes.

I am not in the "at risk" category and we don't have children. We don't work with children.

We are not against vaccines at all, but we figured it was best to leave the few available to those who need it most. Had our doctor recommended it, we would have gotten them.

My husbands been in the military for the past 15 years, and I live on a military base, so although that's his career and I have as little to do with it as possible, I'm not completely out of the loop either. I got the tongue-in-cheek.
My overall perception of what you were saying though was basically that you were not getting the shot, because you had the right to not get the shot, and because you weren't about to be one of the "herd" members. Forgive me if my memory fails, but did you give a reason other than that? Like a side effect that you were worried about? Some research that led you to your decision?

Well, for those who insist this is not a new vaccine, you are not 100% correct. It is new enough that clinical trials have been mandated, unlike the regular flu vaccine which falls under an umbrella allowing it to have more automatic approval each year.

DH works in the clinical trial buisness. h1n1 trials were bid for less than 3 months ago. The bidding process takes at minimum several weeks. It takes several more weeks to even set up a trial. The vaccine is just now being tested in a controlled environment. Due to the hysteria over h1n1, the vaccine is being rolled out with tacit approval, and they will recall if there turns out to be problems. Meanwhile, every person who gets this vaccine is acting as a guinea pig.

It will probably be fine, and may even be moderately effective (which is all the regular flu vaccine ever is). However, with his understanding of the test process, that is not a risk DH is comfortable with our family taking at this point.

Interestingly, we have also gotten some vaccinations that others find alarming, due to his "insider knowledge" of the extent of testing and the test results.

Frankly, I don't understand the intensity over whether or not someone else gets the h1n1 vaccine. This flu will most likely mutate over the next year, so it's not like we can erradicate it by everyone getting the vaccine. It's a personal decision, that should be based on the best knowledge available to each person and combined with their knowledge of how their family members usually react to this kind of drug. Yes, some people have died from h1n1. A lot more people die every year from regular flu. Do what you and your doctor decide is best for your family.

I have to just say that of all the reasons I have heard to not get vaccinated, this is the one I understand and appreciate the most. :)

How 'bout I just don't WANT to do it? I never get flu shots.....and just don't find it to be necessary for my circumstances. (And I have had a mild case of flu once in the past 12+ years).

I don't understand why MY reasons would affect YOU? :flower3:

Yes, yes, and yes. Not to mention that I asked my pedi about it for all of our kids and the office wasn't sure at the time that they were going to recommend it. If my pedi is on the fence about it....that tells me that something isn't right. And my pedi isn't some crazy dr either...it's a very well respected practice. I also have a few nurse friends who said they and several of the drs they work for WILL NOT be giving it to their kids. The peds office we go to stated that they didn't know if they were going to offer it or recommend anything other than the regular flu shot. I don't know if it's a CYA thing in case something happens that comes out later or not...it was just what I was told.

And as far as "the facts" being out there...I'm sure they are. Somewhere. But my point was with all the other articles in conjunction with those claiming to be "real facts" (because, they all are claiming that.) it's hard to really seperate truth from fiction.

I am not at risk so more supply for those who really need it.
