This tipping thing is really out of hand

Not sure if you realize that at alot of restaurants the servers has to tip out a certain percentage of their sales to the kitchen, bartender, etc... so by not tipping it actually COSTS the server money out of their own pocket to wait on those who do not leave anything. Do you think anyone enjoys spending their own money to wait on a cheapskate????

This has actually happened to me. When I worked at Planet Hollywood in Manhattan in my '20's, and got stiffed by many European tourists despite perfect service, I still had to tip out to the bartender, the bus boy, and the food runner, not to mention that I was taxed on income I did not receive.

One lunch shift, I left paying $15.00 out of my own pocket to cover all this and made less than zero....not to mention round trip subway fare for the honor of waiting on clueless tourists.

Nowadays, the fact that tip is not included is on about seven languages on an insert in the check folder, at least in NY.

So thanks all you non tippers. I hope you are proud of your non tipping ways.

I was taught that, if I couldn't afford to appropriately tip, I couldn't afford to go out to dinner. We always tip Servers well. Other people that get a regular salary - no, we do not.

You are exactly right. I was floored tonight when my daughter told me that a well known doctor who comes into her restaurant to eat several times a week NEVER tips!! I was so shocked by that and I find it incredibly rude!

I go tip crazy! Seriously, I went on a school trip to Europe, and I was handing out 25-30% tips like smarties. Of course the waitress I gave a 30% tip to was very pretty, but I digress. My father does this too.

When we go to the US, we tip servers (which were 95% awesome and only 1% terrible), hotel shuttle drivers and taxi drivers as that's all we will meet. Usually nice amounts. One guy got us there in 2/3 the time it usually took, he got a $10 tip on top of a $15 fare.

So keep an eye out if you work in the service industry in Florida and see a rotund british guy enter, your luck might just have come in though I might have a problem tipping self service places.

I went to the new Be our guest restaurant at disney on Christmas day. As it was Christmas day I doubled the tip because I felt that him working that day to make mine happier was worth it (also did it new years eve) so if you see british female dining solo you will get the 20% tip rounded up to next 10 dollar.

Actually, I don' think the cable guy and the mover and the landscaper or the Dunkin Donuts person who just hands you a coffee deserve to be, or even should be, tipped. Though, if these people have gone above and beyond I have tipped these types of positions.

In 1978-79 when I was waiting tables at a pizza place while in college it was $1.35/hr plus tips. If we didn't make enough tips to make up minimum wage, then the restaurant paid us the difference. We were expected to be honest in reporting our tips and I ALWAYS was. We also did NOT split our tips. Anyone who was working in the kitchen, cash register or before/after opening was given minimum wage during that time. We didnt' have a bar, just a couple of beer taps and soda dispenser. Unless it was a very, very slow night, I always made at least minimum wage and sometimes a lot more. Those saying that these businesses should pay minimum wage are really asking for the employees to take a pay cut in a lot of instances. DH and I started dating when I worked there and he would come in and have a $2.00 beer and leave me a $5.00 tip

DH and I always tips 20% in restaurants. We leave tips for maids, if the service deserves it and we never tip our landscaper (he owns the business), the mailman (they make pretty good money,much more than min. wage), furniture delivery men (also paid more than min), etc. Occasionally I drop change in the Starbucks tip bucket, and I do the same in counter service restaurants that have tip buckets, but never 15-20%, just a little additional amount.

So then if your bill is say, $30 you will tip $10 or $16 (sorry I'm unclear; that's over 50%)? Your choice of course and that is very generous of you - and it's always nice to recognize Christmas with a bit of a "gift".

But one thing I want to know when it comes to tipping on percentages of a bill, why is bringing out an expensive entree worth more than bringing out a less expensive one? It's exactly the same amount of work for a server. We often eat in a group where everyone will order a drink, entree and dessert. Some will have a $30 steak with a $12 glass of wine and some will have an $11 chicken wrap with a $4 soft drink. Same number of plates to carry, same number of trips to the table. There is no "upselling" by the server; we know what we want and we order it so there's nothing that's been earned. I've always wondered about this...

We just got back from a trip to Branson, Missouri and I feel tipped out.
Paid to Ride the Ducks, tipped them
Paid $100 each for a Zipline tour, tipped them
Another tour, they wanted tips too
Rode a pony, more tips

I did feel like it was ridiculous and out of hand. We spent sooo much on tips. I felt like we tipped for every single thing we did. And NONE of them were cheap by any means.

on the go" type place here where I live ... so I call in my order and 10 minutes later I show up and they hand me my pizza and I pay ... well I always leave a little tip for them, it may be only a buck and some change to make my total bill an even number but I always do.

One BIG area where I tip generously .... my Tattoo artist ... generally he get's about a 30-40% tip!!! then again, he is permanently inking me so it's definitely worth it .. plus I become a valued client and get preferred seating!

There are certain instances where I won't tip though, garbage men, mailman, car service technicians etc.

It's really just a guideline. I believe those things should be taken into consideration and the tip adjusted accordingly. We go out to eat often, usually with our kids and often a friend or two tagging along. So we sometimes have kids meals, meal sharing, ordering only a side (or even not eating at all) along with only 2 of us drinking alcohol, resulting in a much lower bill for our table size. DH does a rough estimate of what the average bill would come to at a particular place for the number of people in our party and if our bill is less, he'll tip based on the estimated average bill. Of course, if our bill is more, he tips on the actual bill. And yes, sometimes this results in a 50% tip. But the server works just as hard (or even harder) on our table, so I'm sure it is well deserved.

Cab driver (if he/she helps with my luggage. If I have to load it myself no tip)
Bus driver - again if he helps with luggage
Delivery drivers (pizza, Chinese, etc.)
Tour guides

I don't tip movers, mailman, garbage man, the crew that did my roofing, siding, window and deck (although I did make sure there was a cooler full of water), or counter staff at coffee/fast food/ice cream places.

If we had a Sonic I would tip the car hop.

I have an awkward scalp though and I think he earns his tips, his eyes light up when he sees me as I think I pay for his lunch every time I tip...

I am so baffled at all the who to tip and what to tip that my head may explode.

So I tip you if you work for the company doing the job but I don't tip if you own the company.

I don't tip repairmen but tip movers.

I tip waitstaff but not the kid who brings out my food at fast food.

I tip the barber at the chain hair cut place but not the one who owns the shop

I don't tip the mail man or garbage man

Enough already how about this we let businesses pay there employees and let the employees decide if that's enough for them to work. Even better is its a state to state thing on how people are paid.

I am not the best tipper in DW, as I won't leave 15-20$ for a dinner at chef Mickey. ... And I don't tip house keepers/mouse keeping. I also put a DND sign on my door most of the times on cruises cause I won't pay 30$ to turn my bed sheets down n drop a choc mint on my pillow.

I'm not saying whether a mail man should be tipped or not, but that is really forward and assuming for him to do. If I wasn't afraid of my mail going missing, I wouldn't do it on principal. I am all for tipping when it is earned (and that doesn't always mean going above & beyond), but it drives me nuts when it's expected.

Maybe someone in the know can explain this, $2.25 an hr! I read this quoted response, before the article. I had been thinking, some cities in the USA pay lower wages, in comparison to Canada; As home prices, vehicles, appliances, groceries, gas, etc. cost less. Apples/Oranges to compare the two countries.

However, I'm perplexed New York City!? A Raise to $7. something an hr. I do not understand.
