This mom is going way too far re: Nut Allergy

Quote:
There have been no scientific papers or case reports of allergic reactions associated with skin exposure to acorns or pine cones. Based on consultations with my peers,we comfortably recommend that people with a nut allergy should be able to have contact with acorns or pine cones without risk of an allergic reaction. There is no information in the literature that suggests that individuals with a nut allergy should avoid skin contact with acorns or pine cones. Some people do experience allergic reactions when they ingest pine nuts, but the pine cone is made up of different proteins, and handling the pine cone should not cause an allergic reaction.

The family needs to move to a desert area if she's that concerned. Both of my kids have tree nut allergies, one has peanut allergies too. It never occurred to me that acorns posed any threat. I guess I have been negligent all these years.

If she seriously thinks bullies are going to grab her kids and force acorns down their throats she ought to really consider homeschooling.
Honestly, the kids are allergic to tree nuts so she wants the trees cut down?

You have to wonder what she is thinking. I can't imagine that anyone would even think of bullying a child by forcing acorns down their throat... untill this mother put the idea out there for them.

Oh my.

It is people like this "nut" (haha) job that make it harder on the rest of us.

:lmao:

Seriously though. My daughter has food allergies (both peanuts and also tree nuts) and people do not take it seriously because of people like this.

This actually kind of makes me sad. So, when someone like me asks for an accommodation for my child to make her safe in a classroom - like asking the teacher not to pass out Butterfingers or Reese's to all the kids around her - this is why I get the crazy looks. Because someone like this has come before me asking for crazy crap. :confused3

How many kids are seriously out there eating acorns off the ground? I remember gathering pecans as a kid - incidentally, peanuts and all sorts of nuts are some of my favorite foods. I have never eaten an acorn.

Answers:

1. Put a face on the wack job responsible for all this discussion.

2. Encapsulate her persona (by showing a loon costume).

1. Has no bearing on the discussion.

2. It is a halloween costume, what would you expect? Would you care to share some of your costumes?

It isn't the mother in the costume. According to the site (National Wildlife Federation), it is actually a child in the costume. I assume that the PP was trying to funny.

Still has no bearing on the discussion.

This woman is a few jars short of a peanut butter sandwich!

I wouldn't call it entitlement, but definitely a way new level of protectiveness.

As said in the link, "The Star quotes medical authorities as saying they are unaware of any cases of anaphylactic allergic reaction to acorns and if it were to occur it would only be if the child were forced to eat acorns, which are very bitter."

Yes, a peanut allergy can be dangerous, even fatal, but wouldn't it be enough that the mother tells her son that acorns are meant only for Chip and Dale?

What next? Pave over the entire school yard because someone's little darling has hayfever? :confused3

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. ;)

Wow. I have been allergic to tree nuts my entire life and I am 46. When I was in school in the 70s, there certainly were no special accomodations nor were any expected. I had to learn to be responsible, and several times I had to learn the hard way what would happen if I did not.

Unfortunately, over the years I learned that you can't trust even the most well meaning people - especially at the holidays. No - I can't have that sugar cookie because it is on a tray with others with nuts. No - just a little bite is not okay. I was even caught by surprise a few years ago by a dish that was brought into work (contained a pine nut pesto).

However, I will say that recent years have provided improvements. I no longer have to scour every ingredient in packaged goods because allergens are bolded.

I am happy to see that there are many people who understand the difference between peanuts and tree nuts. I can eat peanuts with no problem and many co-workers have a hard time understanding that.
