This MAY be the Rebels' Best Month Yet!

Hi Rebels, looks like everyone is having a good training week, keep it up!

Shout out to the Jedi Master of the Half Marathon, Katie! Good luck on your 19th half, wow. :worship:

AFM – Today is a scheduled rest day before the long walk this weekend.

I think I forgot to mention that I blew the dust off my road bike a few weeks ago and I am planning to cross train on it. I took it out for a spin and noticed the tires were in pretty bad shape and need to be replaced, other than that, everything else seemed in perfect working order. However, the bike ride was like a Ferrari running on two cylinders. Wow, I must have been quite the athlete many years ago.

This week I picked of some new tires and installed them. I might take a ride on it Sunday, weather permitting. Riding it sure brings back wonderful memories.

Have a great weekend Rebels!

I am in the process of getting my bike in shape for starting to train for some road tours and duathlons. I have a paid forward set of pedals coming to me to help me get used to clipless pedals. I will be sure to pay them forward again when I am done with them. :) Right now I only have a mountain bike. I would like to get it outfitted with some hybrid tires until I am sure I am going to keep up with this then get a new road bike.

Hey Fellow Rebels! Hope everyone's month has gotten off to a good start! So far I've done a couple 5K's. The weather here in FL is getting hot and humid so my running is getting a little slow, lol. Looking forward to the Expedition Everest Challenge in a few weeks!! Just signed up for another half marathon in November, it falls 4 days after my 40th bday so I'll be celebrating with a run!
Hope everyone is doing well!

Hi Rebels, just checking in!

Today was my long walk of 9 miles, with an actual mileage of 9.15. I did really well considering I have not done this distance in a month and a half. I felt tired most of the way but was able to maintain a fairly decent pace.

Hi Rebels!

Checking in today with my group run this morning 4 miles in Central Park (those darn hills). But it was a great run. Olivia (my perfect pooch - see below) woke me up at 5 am., but it worked out well because I got in a good breakfast before the run. I'm a night runner, so these early mornings are really killing me.

James - glad you got in your 9 miles. Just keep plugging away.

Shawna - have you done everest before? It was my first event last year and I loved it. Even with the downpour.

Can't wait to hear about Katie's race and if they ever did print her article.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Hi Guys,

just checking in after being away for a while and there's a mountain of posts. Sounds like there's some great running going on, congrats to all racers.

Tiffany, really liked your Tri report. Massive respect to anyone who can do the swim, cycle, run thing.

James, I love that you've signed up for the Goofy already. I'll see you there.

I'm sitting out this week, preparing for the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday. Does anyone else suffer from Taper paranoia ? With no running to do all I can do is worry about each niggle and sniffle and whether I've done enough training. And that's before I start worrying whether the ash cloud will ground my flight up to Edinburgh.

Roll on Sunday,

Liam

Happy Sunday Everyone! We are home from the cabin so it is time to check in with you all!

Jane - How did your shopping for running things go? I have found that running has become a fairly expensive habit for me. My DH teases me that I have to "look good" to "run good". I love to look for new running things! Sounds like your group runs are going well (if only they were at night for you). I still think it is great you have found other people to run with!

James - Did you get your bike all ready to go? I love biking for cross training. I am really excited that it is warm here again and that I will be able to bike to work most the week. Hopefully you were able to enjoy your day of rest before you did the 9 miles! That was a great workout!

Katie - When are you going to have time to add road tours and duathlons to your already busy 1/2 marathon schedule? You will have to fill us all in with how that training goes. I think about trying duathlon this summer but have decided that I will stick to the running for now....maybe next year!

Shawna - Can't wait to hear all about the Expedition Everest Challenge! Enjoy training for it! I think it is great that you are going to be celebrating your 40th with a half marathon!

Liam - I am terrified of taper paranoia! As we are approaching our first 1/2 marathon, I keep thinking that I have to keep running or my body will forget how to do it! I also worry about tripping, throwing up because I didn't train with the drink they are serving, running so slow that people wonder why I am there, and a million other silly thoughts! :upsidedow I am sure you will do incredible and I can't wait to hear how it goes!

AFM - I am feeling happy that I was able to successfully get my 11 miles training run in on Saturday. We were up at the cabin and so it is a bit tricky to figure out what roads will be good to run on. For 4 miles we were on this dirt road with big gravel/rocks and it was totally miserable. Both DH and I agreed we would NEVER run on that road again. There were lots of cars (creating lots of dust), no good shoulder or side of the road to run on so when cars came, we just had to go into the ditch, lots of hills and it was very miserable. Despite it all, we pressed on and did not give up.

My goal for tonight is to find some more events for DH and I. We want to find some 10Ks if possible and some races up north by our cabin since that is normally where we are at on the weekends in the summer.

I am also considering a mud run (10 K with obstacle course) in September. I will need to find a team to be a part of but I think it looks great.

Alright, time to get some things done. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Jen

Dear Rebel Alliance,

I would like to introduce you to your newest teammate..........ME!!!!!

I just got assigned to the Alliance and am ready to roll!!

Here is my BIO from the introduction page:
Hello Everyone!

My name is Nikki. I live in South west Michigan, yes directly in the lake effect snow bands!. I am 25 years old and am currently am a physical therapy technician, and am going to school in the fall to become a physical therapy assistant. I also dabble in the travel agent business on the side for fun!

I have been walk/running for 2 years now. I did my first Disney race in 2009, the 5K during the Princess Marathon weekend. I have done several other 5Ks here in Michigan.

I started walk/running because I needed to get my body in shape, not only for me but for the babies I want to have once I get out of school. Disney is a HUGE motivator for me so tying running to Disney really works for me! I am currently overweight (260lb) and hope that I will drop a few (yeah, like 50) pounds over the next year during training!

I signed up for the WDW 1/2 marathon in Jan to keep me motivated to achieve my fitness goals. I would have preferred to do the Princess 1/2, however, being accepted in the PTA program I will not be able to. Luckily the WDW 1/2 falls during my winter break. And there is not anything better than getting out of MI during the winter!

I can't wait to join a team and have some develop some accountability partners!

I can't wait to go on lunch today at work and get caught up with my new team!!!

Welcome to the group Nikki! So happy to have you join us.

Jen: The road tours and Duathlons aren't going to be scheduled till 2011, though I am already seeing it fill up fast, lol.

I am hurting from my half marathon yesterday. Did great through the 10K mark, though it was VERY hilly. I was pacing a friend through her first half marathon. She fell during another race last month and hurt her knee. Well the pain came back during the race. We made it to about 8.5 or 9 before we had to tell our other friends to leave us and we started walking more. Ended up walking the last 3 miles straight through which included the 1 mile long hill from h-e-double hockey sticks. I was not prepared to speed walk the last few miles uphill.

:welcome: Nikki!!!!

Great to have another member of our team. I'm already loving your enthusiasm. I, too, am overweight and looking to shed a few pounds. I'm a run/walker and registered for the WDW 1/2 in January. You'll love it here. Everyone is really smart, helpful and supportive.

Jen Congrats on your 11 miles. Way to push through the gravel/dirt and traffic.

Liam I hope you are able to make it to Scotland. I keep hearing about the ash cloud rearing it's ugly head. Hopefully, it will clear and all will be well. I have not yet tapered as I haven't run my first half. So I don't know of the paranoia you speak of, but in the end I'm sure your training will pay off and it'll be a great race.

Yesterday was a rest day for me. Feeling so much better than I did last weekend after my group run. Walked to work this morning. Going to see David Letterman tonight. Such a NY thing to do and yet I've never done it. It should be fun.

Happy Running!

Hi Rebels!!!

:welcome: Nikki!!! Sounds like you have a great goal. I will be joining you at the WDW ½ marathon.

Jen – Yes, I have the bike all ready. Now, I just need the motivation to get on the thing. It is kind of built for the open road and is not fun in town with all the stop and go. Great job on your 11 miles over the weekend. BTW, I like your ½ marathon plan.

Liam – I have not experienced taper madness yet, but I suspect that I will be finding out. Wish you luck and have a good time in your Marathon this weekend.

Jane – Have a great time at the David Letterman show tonight, sounds fun.

AFM – This is week 5 of my marathon training. I made it through last week with no problems and I am hoping this week goes the same way. Yesterday was supposed to be cross training on the bike but the weather was crummy, so I made it a rest day. ;) Today is a scheduled rest day.

Have a wonderful Monday (If that is possible) Rebels!!!

Hi all - I am hopefully back again.
I had a good weekend being on the other side of the race. my DH and I volunteered at the local Marathon. It was so much fun! I have only been interested in races for about the last year so it was great to see some of the back side of the event. We were traffic directors at the end of the event - since we are tall folk and people could see us. I was able to congratulate a few of my friends when they finished. It was great. I am hoping it will inspire me to get back into running. I have the Disneyland half in not too long and a 10K in 3 weeks. Better get moving!

Today was my long walk of 9 miles, with an actual mileage of 9.15.
Way to go James. :cool1: Nice job.
Jen - congratulations on doing the 11 miles. It sounds like you are so determined. You inspire me.:)
Liam - I felt the same way this March. :eek:It was my first Half and I worked so hard at preparing myself. I felt so guilty during the taper and scared that something was going to keep me from the race. All worked out fine in the end as I'm sure will happen for you. Know that your feelings are understood and are part of the whole process.
Jane - Glad your Central Park run worked out well. Enjoy the David Letterman show. I am not that far from NY and yet I have never been to see him either. Isn't is funny how those things so close to home are often overlooked.
:welcome:Welcome Nikki. Glad to have you on the team. I have found such support and understanding here with the Rebels.:grouphug:
My weekend was good. I got in my 4m. walks Sat. and Sun. and even discovered some new areas that will work for future hikes. I also got some good exercise in playing basketball and baseball with grandsons. Basically, we just had fun!!
To all Rebels, have a fantastic week!!!

Nikki - :welcome: Another great big WELCOME! I hope you will find some great motivation and support here for both your walk/running and your weight loss. I started with the weight loss in January of this year by doing the BL9 on the WISH main thread and have now lost 38 pounds! :cool1: It has been a journey filled ups and downs as I learn to eat better and not eat for any emotional reasons. About the start of January I also started this crazy running kick. I was NOT a runner but I now will easily call myself one and am so excited (and terrified) to have my first 1/2 marathon be just 19 days away!!! You can do this!

Katie - I love that you helped pace a friend through her first half...that is such great support! I bet she really appreciated having someone there for her, especially when it came to the walking at the end. I hope you feel better soon though! :thumbsup2

Jane - Hoped you enjoyed your day of rest yesterday...I know I did. It is great that you are able to walk to work - it is a great way to keep those miles adding up! Have fun tonight!

James - Get going on that bike! It sounds like fun. You might have to find some new places to ride though. I know what you mean about the stop and go in town...that is how I feel when I bike to work. I love when I can just go.

Sounds like your marathon training is going great! Keep it up!

Manda - Hello! I think it is great that you volunteered at the marathon. I am always amazed at how much work it takes to put on a race. DH and I are thinking about volunteering at one some time just to give back a little of what we get out of each race.

Gretchen - Sounds like your weekend was really productive since you got all those miles, found new areas to hike in AND were able to get more exercise in as well!

AFM - I did do some searching last night for more races but DH and I haven't finalized anything yet. We will continue to search and really start to study the calendar.

Today I was able to bike to work because it was beautiful outside. This means I will get 6 miles of biking in today for some extra cross training. I still want to spend some time on my core muscles tonight. Even though I have lost a bunch of weight, I don't feel like enough of my "belly" is gone! :rotfl: Still haven't decided if DH and I will do a short run tonight or tomorrow...we will play it by ear when we see how much we need to get done tonight.

Have a great rest of the day!
Jen

:welcome: to the Rebels Nikki! You have found the perfect place for encouragement and understanding. Lots of us are trying to lose weight and get healthy, and many of us are using Disney (and the Disney races) as our motivation. That is so great that you are getting healthy now for your family's future. It sounds like you have concrete goals and plans, which always helps. Please just jump right in and start posting on the thread. Ask any questions you can think of, and offer advice to those that have questions, or just chit chat about anything. We'd love to hear from you! :cheer2:

Tiffany - How about you - you inspired some of Jane's friends to sign up for a race! You are inspiring! :cool1:

Jane - Jane, I don't see where anyone answered you on this, so I will - to get the pictures for your signature, right click over somebody else's and copy the code next to Address (URL). That is the code you will use in your signature. If you want it smaller or larger, you will have to edit it in a program like Photobucket or Picnik.

I bet you were glad to hear you needed to slow down on your walk breaks! You probably weren't expecting that!

Tiffany - You met every single goal, congratulations! You did such an amazing job working through all the training, and not letting your mini freak-out completely derail your race. You must feel so proud of yourself. When you're having off days or training for another race and feeling discouraged, remember how you felt getting that medal.

Thank you all for the great bit welcome!

I started the walking plan for M4M today!
It was a nice walk on the TM for me! SILLY ME forgot to even look at her milage at the end of my workout! Oye!

I work at a physical therapy place and we are still training a new sectary so after work I stay and workout to be there in case she has any questions. I also like the TM right now because I have had shin issues in the past!

Good morning everyone! I haven't checked in for a while, there's lots of great training going on. I am getting so excited for the Expedition Everest Challenge and my girls weekend at Disney. I am also seriously considering a half in October. I keep going to the registration page and then chickening out before I can sign up. If I want to do a half in October, when should I start a training plan?

Keep up the great work everyone!

If I want to do a half in October, when should I start a training plan?

Provided you have a good base (approx. 15 miles per week with long run of 5) you would want about 9 weeks to train properly for a half marathon. This will give you a chance to slip in a couple mileage fall back weeks. So depending on when your race is in October you would start your training sometime in the month of August.

Good Morning Rebels! Just checking in!

Nikki – Keep plugging a way at the TM and it sounds like you have a walking plan that works for you, awesome. When I first started walking, I had shin pain myself. It had taken many months before that pain was no longer a problem. As you build strength into your legs it should get better, hopefully anyway. However, I found it to be discouraging at first. Although, if you work in physical therapy, you might already know this. :)

cwnhokie – I agree with Katie. It does not take long to prepare for a half marathon. Hope you don’t mind me asking, but what half are you thinking about doing in October?

Katie – Feeling better?

AFM – I got my scheduled 5 mile walk in this morning. I am still feeling a tad sluggish but I did maintain my targeted pace of 14:00. It was a beautiful morning for a walk.

Anyway, have a great day Rebels!

Hi Rebels! I am back again! Hopefully for a while this time.

Gretchen: What a fun weekend! Sounds like you live in a beautiful place with so much walking and hiking. You are lucky.

Jen: That is an amazing amount of weight to lose! Congratulations. Good luck finding races to do! It was a lot more fun to volunteer for the race than I thought it would be. We first signed up with the Disney Give a Day program. It just seemed fitting to help out at the marathon when we were going to use our ticket at Disneyland when we go for the half!

Nikki: I think it is great that you didn’t look at the mileage. When I am on the TM I tend to just stare at the display.

Cwnhokie: I like the half marathon distance. It is long enough that I feel like it is an accomplishment, but not so long that I die. I don’t know much about training. I didn’t do so good at training for the two I have done. I promise to do better, next time.

James: Good job at walking 5 miles, and that is a great pace! I need to find the inspiration to get out in the mornings, but they come so early!

AFM: I was thrilled that I put in about 3 miles yesterday. I have been a couch potato for most of this year. It was time to start again because I weighed myself and I am at my highest weight ever. Not a good thing. Yesterday was the start of the downhill portion of this ride! I did my 3 miles by doing walk/run intervals. It was pretty good. I am not in as good of shape as I was a few months ago, but I will get back into it. No more letting life get in the way!

Have a Wonderful day Rebels!
