As our contract is waiting to pass ROFR and we probably won't be able to make a ressie till March, I'm daydreaming the time away about how to use some banked points that must be used by end of the year. I've been reading all sorts of threads about how the DVC system works. My brain is a little dizzy with the details.. Hoping someone can explain succinctly how we can use our points plus rent the balance needed from another member. Would only need 60 or so for a week at HHI in the summer. Since that is not our home resort and I understand it fills up quickly in the summer, I know that it would be a tough one for us to secure on our own only a few months out. Do we look for someone that owns that resort and have them book it for us? Can we then add on our points when they are available? Do we transfer our points to the other Dvc member? Help! Thanks in advance for any help.

Only points associated with HHI can be used to book something there more than 7 months prior to check -in. You can either have someone who owns HHI transfer points into your membership and then you can use them to book a reservation yourself, or you can pay someone who owns at HHI to book the reservation for you.

You cannot use points from any other resort to book nights at HHI until 7 months prior to check-in. It's very difficult to get a studio or 1 bedroom at HHI for the summertime. Usually, most of the nights are already booked by owners before the 7 month window opens.

Thanks CarolMN for responding. I got the part about not being able to book out before 7 months anywhere unless it's my home resort. I guess I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to secure a reservation from someone who owns HHI and wants to rent/transfer only say 56 points. I will have the rest in March. I'm afraid if I wait till March to book it myself I will be out of luck for any summer months. My banked points must be used by this Nov. and since we just returned from a Disney cruise & land trip we aren't quite ready to go back to WDW again so soon. HHI seems like a nice alternative for a slower pace vacation. I don't know if this is a common scenario and not sure if I can even post it on the rent/trade thread. Certainly don't want to lose all those points though.

Once you close you can try to rent them out.

It's going to be pretty difficult to get anything at Hilton Head in the summer, no matter whose points are being used.

It sounds like the main reason you are booking this trip is to use banked points, correct? So if you arranged with another owner for part of the nights and then you couldn't get the rest of them and use your own points what would you do? In this instance I think you just need to wait. What about using some of your current points you have to complete the reservation if you are able to get it instead of renting? Then, if you find you are lacking points later you can get a transfer or rent at that time when it isn't so iffy on if you'll even get what you want with your own points. I'm all for using what you own yourself until you don't have any left and then determing what you'll do for your stays.

Before you daydream too much, June through August is already pretty booked up. There are currently some 2 bedrooms starting August 18. September is wide open.
