This Isn’t Turkey!?! Part 11 Epcot D-U-D-E-S!

If you have missed any days please see my Trip Report Index

Me, Sarah, 30 – only adult planner
DH, Craig, 32 loves holidays, hates planning
DD, Holly, age 9 loves rides and hoping to try Kraken, loves planning
DD, Rowan, age 7 never been on any big rides, fearless (or so she says)

Friday 30th June 2006

Today we had a late start despite heading to Epcot today. The girls had some cereal in the room but Craig and I had nothing. Bad idea, we know. We arrived at Epcot later than intended and headed straight to Soarin’ to collect fastpasses. The return time was 1 ½ hours away so we decided to hang about nearby. By this time my tummies were rumbling so we decided to eat at Sunshine Seasons. Craig had a chile bowl, the girls had kids meal ham rolls and I had a Turkey Muffuletta (huge sandwich!) This came to $26.89 and it was delicious.

After ‘brunch’ we queued for Living with the Land. Although it was popular the queue moved quickly and we were on in 20 minutes. We all thoroughly enjoyed this ride and our guide was very informative. We were amazed at the size and amount of some of the plants!

Next we went to watch The Circle of Life. I couldn’t relax here though as I just knew snakes where going to appear – and they did – 2 of them – eeeuuurrggghhh!
Apart from that it was good and the environmental message came across really well.

As it was not quite time for our Soarin’ trip we decided to have one of the delicious looking cakes at Sunshine Seasons. Holly had a chocolate cake and it came to $15.40 for the four.

Mmmmm cakes

It was time for Soarin’ now. Despite having fastpasses we had quite a wait but it was well worth it. The swoop up was amazing and the whole show took our breath away. The scenery was brilliant and we loved the smell from the orange groves. I particularly liked flying over the sea. We all agreed it was fantastic.

Craig was really keen to try Mission Space but I was not up to the challenge as simulators can sometimes make me very dizzy / queasy. Holly and Rowan were not keen either so we decided to split up for a while. Craig set off for Mission Space and was going to get fastpasses for Test Track too.

The girls and I headed to The Living Seas and immediately joined the queue for Turtle Talk with Crush. We had a bit of a wait but were kept entertained with all the little ones in the line – not really sure who was entertaining who to be honest!

Turtle Talk was well worth the wait. I knew what happened but my kids were flabberghasted. Everyone in the room was fascinated and Crush was a charmer!! If I had a dollar for every time he said ‘D-u-d-e-s’ or 'd-u-d-e-t-t-e-s' we could have eaten very well that night. Dory also appears – yay! – she was very funny. Loved the way he pointed out the kids to ask questions, ‘Um, like yeah, the dude in the yellow shell’ LOL very cute. I would highly recommend this for kids big and small.

Once we exited Turtle Talk we headed to look around the aquariums which were absolutely amazing. Craig caught up with us here and said Mission Space had blown his mind in a good way! He also had the all important fastpasses for Test Track. The shark exhibit area was also good – great photo opportunity here.

The next area we headed to was Imagination where we all went on the ride Journey Into Imagination with Figment. It was good fun and I agree with other dibbers that the song is insanely catchy. Sing along you know you want too!! I-mag-i-nation, i-mag-i-nation… We exited into the Kodak sponsored area where we were met by a mad ‘professor’ type who asked if we would like our photo taken. We agreed and she asked us if we could be crazy in the photo – we duly obliged,LOL. The photo appeared on a large screen for all to see. She then demonstrated the printing station that you see in shops etc and gave us a copy of our photo. We were very proud especially as she said it was the most horrific one she had ever seen!!

Say cheese!

There are lots of proper custom made photos you can purchase here. We had a family one done with Minnie and Mickey but she had Craig and I stood slightly side on and my arms looked hideous – big bingo wings – so we didn’t buy it.

Craig and Holly then went to see Honey, I Shrunk the Audience but I sat this one out as I hate snakes. Rowan decided not to bother going in and stayed to keep me company and mooch ice lollies! Clever girl. She had great fun getting splashed by the leaping fountains. Rowan also saw Figment and went over to see him. They sepnt ages trying to copy each other eg standing on one leg, touch your nose, waving etc It was very funny. When Holly came out of the show (which she and her dad had both enjoyed) she joined in and they had their photo taken. They also got more than alittle bit wet playing in the fountains.

Figment was funny!

Next we set off for Test Track with a stop at Club Cool. We had great fun here sampling all the different drinks. Nobody was overly keen on the Beverley. I started chatting to a nice lady and ended up giving her a Scottish flag pin and told her she could tell everyone back home that she met a mad flag pin lady. She then rummaged in her bag and produced coloured feathers for me and the girls and started to sing a cheery little song about a tickle a day keeping the frowns at bay. She then told me I could tell everyone back home that I had me a mad feather lady! That was very funny. We decided to look around Innoventions and had a great time including the Kidscot stop and making paper from tumble drier fluff! Craig also got his first giant pretzel.

Shall I try the Beverley?

Test Track was next and it was even better than I thought it would be. I got a fright when the truck almost crashed into us and when we went outside – oh boy – it was so much faster than it looked on the videos clips I had seen. Fantastic!!!!

We all headed round World Showcase taking in the sights , sounds and smells of the different countries. We went into Mexico first and rode El Rio del Tiempo before finding a machine that lets you send free animated photo postcards via email. We had a scream doing these! Mum said they were absolutely hilarious.

We visited each country on the way to Morocco. We bought a Kaki Gori from Japan (shaved ice with fruit flavoured syrups). We had the rainbow one with strawberry, honeydew melon and tangerine. It tasted lovely. At Morocco I had a henna design put on my hand. $25!!!! Not exactly a bargain for a squeeze of brown paste but we’re on holiday.

How much?!? Pretty though isn't it?

We headed back around the lagoon stopping to buy a baseball cap for Craig in America ($20) and a ride on Maelstrom. I didn’t go on as I was told to keep my hand dry. Craig and the girls said it was OK but I didn’t miss anything exciting.

We went to Cantina de San Angel for dinner and planned to stay here until after Illuminations. We ordered a mountain of food. Plato Combinacion, Wet Burrito (tastier than it sounds), 2 kids burrito meals, nachos and 2 large drinks. I do not have the receipt but it was not expensive at all. Bit of a bargain and very tasty.

By the time it was getting dark we decide that as a lot of the show would be in the air, we would move to get a better view (parasols were blocking part of the sky view) We moved round to sit by the lagoon edge in Norway. We just grabbed a spot on the path like everyone else. We were very excited when all the lights went off. Illuminations was a great show. I really can’t describe how much we enjoyed all aspects of the show. I had read about it on the Dibb but it really did have to be seen to be believed. We loved the atmosphere and felt a real sense of togetherness with everyone else watching. Gee, reading it back that sounds a bit weird but it was true. That ended our amazing day at Epcot adding so many memories to our trip that will last a lifetime. Not much else to tell except we were in our beds as fast as our weary legs could carry us!

What a show!

Love the tattoo, Sarah - how long did it last? I am jealous that you saw Figment, I will have to look for him this year. Great illuminations photo.
