My dogs are already the laziest dogs on the planet (I started a thread on that a few weeks ago). They normally sleep 20 out of 24 hours :faint: . The vet gave Toby benedryl for his allergies and this is what I end up with... he didn't even move when I got up off the couch to take the pictures :rotfl:

Benadryl made our dog hyper. Have you had your dog checked for diabetes? My in-laws had what they thought was a very lazy dog, didn't move most of the day and after several months discovered that the dog was diabetic. As soon as they started giving her insulin she pepped up and was very playful.

Maybe you can just think of him as a furry throw for the couch. ;)

I don't know about dog benadryl, but people benadryl is the same drug in OTC sleep aids. Same exact stuff, different labels and marketing. :) It makes people (and I guess dogs, too!) sleepy, that's just what it does. No worries. :)

It is people Benedryl that the dogs take. My dog was bit by a spider on the snout and it blew up like a balloon. I called the vet and they said to just give him Benedryl. I've also given it to him during the spring when allergies would strike.

Well Toby looks like a "drunken sailor".:rotfl2: Thanks for he laugh!

FWIW, Benadryl is the same the world over, OTC for people and pets have the same side effects.

I know that when I take Benedryl it knocks me out cold.

Awwww....he looks just like our dog Buster.
We game him 1/2 a tab of Benedryl twice a day for years for his allergies

That's strange, when my dog Ruby had an allergic reaction our vet told us to give her children's benadryl, but said she wouldn't have the same reaction as adults to it, and wouldn't get sleepy.

She was fine after it, not sleepy at all, but I guess dogs are just like us, and react to medications differently!!

BTW, Toby is just gorgeous!! :)

That's good to know! I always see drug labels at the zoo for tons of the same stuff people take and wonder if they do anything different to the drugs for the animals. Before I saw that at the zoo, I always figured people and animals had different drugs. Don't know why I thought that.

Thanks for sharing! You learn something new every day. :)

DH took our GSD, Simon, to the vet today to get his kennel cough shot, and I told DH to ask about getting something to sedate Simon when I take him to the kennel next week, because he's HORRIBLE when I drop him off. Anyway...the vet said to give him Benadryl. I was surprised, but then I get on the DIS and this is the first thread I see! I hope I don't have to carry Simon into the kennel!

And Toby is gorgeous!

I've given children's Benedryl to our dog a couple times when he was scratching incessantly, he looked just like this. It's a good time to trim their nails, if he needs it.

Our Freddie had a bout of allergies recently and we gave him benedryl (along with a low dose of steroids an antibiotic and some kind of skin vitamin) and he didn't seem much lazier than usual...

He's our 'big dumb doggy'... he's better now but I wouldn't hesitate to give him benedryl again if he starts itching.

ps... this is Mrs Jr60004 - my puter broke so I'm borrowing the ol man's for a minute...

He looks like I did once or twice in college when.... oh wait, sorry. Wrong thread. This was about Benadryl, right? Oops....

:rolleyes1

Maybe Toby's not lazy maybe your too active lol no seriously poor thing. I read somewhere dogs need twice the ammount of sleep we do so he should be ok.

We have severe thunder storms (and hurricanes) here in south Florida and my dog gets serious anxiety attacks (shaking, crying, pacing, rapid heartbeat, hiding). Our vet told us to give her benedryl for her anxiety and it works. Funny thing, one day at work the storms began brewing and I was running in the parking lot to drive home and sedate our schnauzer with the benedryl. I saw two other co-workers scrambling to their cars and we discovered we were all running home to medicate our poor dogs. The thunder and lightening is that violent around here!

My dog would be that way when I gave her Benadryl for allergies....but then I switched to Claritin. That seemed to help just as well for her allergies without knocking her completely out.:) You might ask your vet about it to see if that would work for your dog and to find out the dosage.
