This is us..

I finally got a chance to watch the show and loved it. The one thing that really bothered me is the reference to the Challenger explosion. It happened in Jan. 1986 and if these kids were born in 1980 they would have been 6 (most likely 5) and the Man-ny (can't remember his name) kept saying he was 7 and in 2nd grade. I really wish they'd gotten that right. I also suspected something was a little off when I saw the jean jacket. It reminded me of one my uncle had that I thought was so cool. I can't wait for the next episode!

This caught my attention to. I was in 2nd grade when the explosion happened. (Born in June of 1978 so I'm one of the youngest in my class) Still can clearly remember watching the lift-off in class when it went horribly bad. When they said what birthday they were celebrating I had to quick do the math on my own age! Nope, I'm not 36 but 38! Darn! But then I figured the show may not be present time or the time from when it was written until it aired caused the discrepancy.

Looking back now that I've seen the episode the twist does make sense, but ya, I never saw it coming either.

I like how they still devoted a big chunck to when the kids were young. And sadly Kate had weight issues very young.also the brothers did NOT get along.
I want to know more about this episode's "twist"-did it happen when kids were younger? Or was it late in life

also wonder if EVERY episode will have a twist?

I think they eluded to the dad dying in the pilot? I would guess the Miguel thing happened after that. At least I sure hope it did! I didn't see that coming either. My husband was fixated on the bad aging makeup, and I said "all I saw was Miguel" LOL! I guess that explains why the spent so much time on the guy he had a couple drinks with at the bar.

Mandy Moore said that they weren't going to make twists their thing. She did say there was one more in last nights episodes, but she said it wouldn't be all the time.

I also want to know more about TV star brother Kevin-where he lives ?girlfriends? All they have shown is the TV show angle.

How did they elude to it? I don't remember seeing anything like that.

I missed the first episode but I watched last night (episode 2 I am guessing and hope) and it took me to just before the end to figure out the twist from the first show. I kept wondering why the kids would know about the Webster show to call the little boy Webster and as the show went on, I caught on and I was like this is cool what they are doing with this show!! Looking forward to this becoming a Tuesday night thing for me!

The ending didn't surprise me. The way he talked about her and the fact that they were having problems, you could kind of see something may happen. I agree with the bad aging make up.:sad2:

I could've sworn Randall told his biological father something that made me think his adoptive father wasn't around anymore. This was the scene in the pilot when his bio father picked up the photo frame of his parents.

How did they elude to it? I don't remember seeing anything like that.

I think they eluded to it when Miguel was talking to Jack on the phone, and Miguel was giving Jack's wife a ton of compliments, saying Jack hit the lottery because shes beautiful, has a nice butt (not the word he used), etc.

I wasn't completely shocked by the twist because I also remember them talking about Jack not being around but can't pinpoint where that was said, but I didn't expect grandpa to be Miguel! It will be interesting to see how that all comes about. Love this show so far.

My speculation? Something happens to dad, car accident (alcohol related???) or something like that. Mom still had the necklace on, which leads me to think it wasn't a divorce.

That's what I was going to say. She wouldn't be wearing the necklace if it was for a bad reason. I am almost positive they referenced the dad being dead in the pilot....i just hope Milo is a feature in the show. I will be disappointed if he isn't really in it.

I thought the same thing when I saw the necklace, that the reason he was gone was not a bitter divorce or disintegration of their love and marriage. I thought an alcohol related accident or suicide. Then jealous best friend moved in on her.

I also think that they alluded to Jack being dead in the pilot by the way some things were worded. I can't remember exactly what was said when Randall and William were looking at the picture, but William said something about being sure that Randall's dad was proud of him in the past tense. Then Kate said remember what dad used to say. Neither come right out and say that Jack is no longer around, but the way that they were worded kind of points in that direction.

My hope is that Jack did turn himself around but then died after the kids were mostly grown...maybe in their mid-late 20s. The way that the girls referred to Miguel as "grandpa" leads me to think that he has been grandpa for all/most of their lives. Randall calls him Miguel, so it feels like maybe he wasn't "dad" while they were still growing up.

Some of the scenes make me uncomfortable, but I'm still enjoying it and can't wait to see where they go.

Good point, I didn't think about that until you mentioned it. I did also notice that the kids called him 'grandpa' (as the PP mentioned as well), so it does seem like he's been around for the grandkids life.
