This is us..

I also think that they alluded to Jack being dead in the pilot by the way some things were worded. I can't remember exactly what was said when Randall and William were looking at the picture, but William said something about being sure that Randall's dad was proud of him in the past tense. Then Kate said remember what dad used to say. Neither come right out and say that Jack is no longer around, but the way that they were worded kind of points in that direction.

My hope is that Jack did turn himself around but then died after the kids were mostly grown...maybe in their mid-late 20s. The way that the girls referred to Miguel as "grandpa" leads me to think that he has been grandpa for all/most of their lives. Randall calls him Miguel, so it feels like maybe he wasn't "dad" while they were still growing up.

Some of the scenes make me uncomfortable, but I'm still enjoying it and can't wait to see where they go.

Just out of curiosity, what scenes have made you uncomfortable? I don't remember anything that struck me as weird or controversial.

I think that storyline is so real! They are doing it well, IMO.

I agree. I don't know if it is because I have been there or what, but I can feel her pain when the people staring at her and when she stands on the scale. The struggle she has every single day that she has clearly dealt with her entire life.

OMG I love Kate's story line. I was wondering if the guy Toby was going to be creepy or some kind of weirdo, but he is actually quite endearing. He has these little dashes of humor that I like.

He reminds me, A LOT, of my husband (in his humor...and his size..my husband is 6'5ish and bigger...love it!)

Oh, not that level of discomfort. I didn't find anything weird or controversial, and I didn't think anything should have been done differently. It all relates to my own issues and insecurities. The scene where Kate loses it at the weight loss meeting and says some pretty hurtful things to others was a big one. The other issue is the way that Kevin is so impulsive and doesn't seem to think things through. It makes for great tv drama, but it just makes me a little uncomfortable sometimes. I do want to see where it all goes.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining. As a big gal myself, I find myself relating to Kate a lot.

I just don't like conflict in general, so sometimes even watching it makes me uncomfortable. I know that you need that for tv/movies...hence, the reason that my life would make really bad entertainment. :) And maybe I can relate to Kate a little too well for my own comfort as well.

The Kate storyline seems so genuine and real to me. I also think Randall's story is great. I can live without the Manny storyline. You agreed to take work on a stupid sitcom and get paid millions to do it. Now you suddenly think you are better than that and you want out. Too bad. Suck it up and do your job and pursue your other dreams in your spare time. Or, quit and face a lawsuit and likely be banned from the industry. Don't really care, but stop the pity party.

I think they eluded to the dad dying in the pilot? I would guess the Miguel thing happened after that. At least I sure hope it did! I didn't see that coming either. My husband was fixated on the bad aging makeup, and I said "all I saw was Miguel" LOL! I guess that explains why the spent so much time on the guy he had a couple drinks with at the bar.

Mandy Moore said that they weren't going to make twists their thing. She did say there was one more in last nights episodes, but she said it wouldn't be all the time.
Too bad - as plot devices I find the way the first 2 episodes ended to be totally captivating!! If they could keep it this clever for an entire season I'd love it. :lovestruc

Not the poster you asked, but I found the scenes with Kevin being so mean to Randall absolutely heart-wrenching. For some reason I didn't expect that. :guilty:

Kevin being mean to Randall-But it had to be confusing to the kids in school (thus the teasing)-BACK THEN- because mixed race families were NOT as common as today

Yes, and I think they were trying to show how much Kevin was a follower and not a leader. Instead of standing up for his brother, he went off with the bully kid because he wanted to be "liked" and be popular. This need to be popular probably is why he is in the mess with the studio i.e. him wanting to do real acting, but he signed up to be the Manny and all they really want is for him to take off his shirt and look pretty. It's like he is now sick of following the popular crowd and pleasing everyone else but himself.

I am hesitant about the Rebecca/Jack story now that we know they do not end up together. They are portrayed as having that once in a lifetime love, the kind of love everyone dreams about but few actually achieve. It seems their story will be wrapped in angst and sorrow and while I want to know what happened, I am also kind of dreading it.

Yes, and he pretty much said that in his phone call to Randall. Randall asked him who cares what everyone else thinks, and he answered that they both knew that he did or something like that. They are definitely building these characters.

Which is why my hope is that they do find that kind of love again before he dies. But probably angst and sorrow will make for the more interesting story line. I just find it a little depressing.

No show next Tuesday because of the VP Debates. :( I guess we'll need to wait an extra week.

I'm really loving this show. I didn't really see the twist coming but when the kids yelled "grandma and grandpa" my eyebrows went up because I know they referenced their dad in the past tense in the first episode. Made me wonder who grandpa was.
