This Is Us- Season two

Okay but the incident we saw as a child was Kate barging in on her mom in the shower while she was singing to herself. Kate got intimidated by that specific incident which caused her not to want to sing at the talent show. Rebecca had no idea about it. How is that Rebecca's fault?

First, it is not Rebecca's fault and I'm surprised that Rebecca didn't say "no you signed up to sing Kate - made a commitment, go backstage ". As I felt that scene was a bit bizarre. Rebecca was a woman with a lot of boundaries as a wife and a parent and it didn't seem to fit her character.

It did show that she was a little too personally invested in her daughter's talent. Well that is how it read to me. I know what you are saying ---she's just singing in the shower in a private moment, that was supposed to be private.

But it just didn't come off to me as just singing in the shower full stop.

The thing I appreciated about my parents is that they both had a full life on their own and I never felt as though they were ever enveloped in mine. Or living through me somehow. There's a dynamic with Kate and Rebecca. And like someone else already pointed out, it just is. Not necessarily anyone's fault. It is just difficult for them to understand one another.

Interesting what people notice.

I noticed the meal that Kate wasn't eating. Grapes and.... well not sure cottage cheese? There are a lot of subtleties in the show.

I noticed that too. Didn't Rebecca comment on young Kates eating once? Saying something about not eating too much?

Yes. There was a prolonged scene last season where the boys got a regular breakfast. And Kate got _________. Whatever it was. Kate was not happy and said she was hungry. And *I think* Jack was against Rebecca's tactics.

And while all of you like Toby for his comment about "Team Kate 4eva," did you see his facial expression at Kevin's filming when Kate told Rebecca, "Ohhhhh so you're a singer?" Toby was thinking, "I can't believe you just said that you crazy lady."

But they are very separate. I think the latter was Toby being smart enough to know his fiance was triggered and oh here we go kind of thought... :duck:

Being that even Kate admitted she was being rude, after the fact.

With Rebecca it was a very serious conversation where Rebecca was trying to get Toby to see her side. And Toby barely knows her. He was just making it clear that his allegiance is with Kate.

Yes because she's a snowflake. I think that was my original commentary on the whole Kate thing last night.

I get how Kate could be insecure around her mom and jealous of her as a kid. Her mother did some things that effected Kate's young mind without even realizing it. But Kate's an adult now. She needs to get over it already. Go to therapy, talk it it with your mom but do something. Her mother did not abuse her and didn't do anything with malicious intent. Give the woman (her mom) a break. Geesh.

eta: my mom wasn't a perfect mom. There's things she did when I was a kid hat I look back on and think *** was she thinking. But at the end of the day I know she did the best she knew how to do. Nothing was done maliciously. I couldn't imagine holding onto something like that for forever.

I was sad that (child) Kate didn't sing, though, after Rebecca did something so sweet in remaking the dress! - I think that shows she did want her to succeed and enjoy the talent show, and just didn't realize what her words were doing. It's a shame Kate heard Rebecca singing and compared herself to that.

Right I don't get how that's Rebecca's fault? If Kate is intimidated by her mom's singing ability or smoking hot bod, then that's on her. Should Rebecca get fat and sing poorly so Kate feels better about herself? Yes Rebecca makes some backhanded compliments at times but I don't get the harm in telling someone how they can get better. Should we just tell everyone how perfect they are at all times? I guess that's the participation trophy mentality.

I never said the shower part was Rebecca's fault. (In fact, I said above that she seemed to really be behind her with sewing the dress and all.)

But I do fault her for the backhanded compliments, and I don't think she "reads" Kate well at all. - As a parent, I think you try to figure out when your kids want advice on "how they can get better" and when they just need to know you think the world of them.

I think it goes back to Rebecca's constant qualifiers. When Kate sang in the kitchen, Rebecca said something like, "that was great, but you should hold the last note a little longer." Then she told Kate she -kate- was the best singer in the house, then she snuck in the bathroom and heard Rebecca singing. I think it just crushed her since it was a lie, Kate was not the best singer in the house, Rebecca was. Kind of like the scene where Kate looked at Rebeccas shirt in the closet and it was a "small" Kate looked at the tag on her shirt and it was large. Not Rebecca's fault she is thin, just a blow to Kate. Kate has talked in the past about how perfect her mom is, pretty, thin, great singer etc. Kate feels like she will never measure up. Deep stuff that was planted in her childhood. Not easy to just shake off as an adult.

That scene in the kitchen is exactly what I was thinking about. "You sounded great, but...." After a lifetime of that, it would not surprise me for someone to hold a little bit of resentment over it.

A lot of her issues are within herself.

Yes if at thirty-seven you haven't recognized that your parents are flawed and aren't going to change all that much ie. human, most definitely it is within yourself.

This.

I obviously love her character. I am curious, and not baiting you, why does she bug you so much?

She is cold and bossy and Randall had valid points but she just doesn't like to listen to him. I guess all in all she just rubs me the wrong way.

As far as Kate goes... I think Rebecca does what any parent does - tries to help their kid and then Jack just undoes it by giving into Kate all the time in whatever way he can. I think Kate has gotten those mixed signals her entire lifetime and chooses to see Rebecca as the bad person and puts Jack on a pedestal because he "showed" her more love than criticism.

there are so many good theories on the death here. I still keep going back to-the personal things in the bag are not charred, dirty, or black at all, which makes me think it was not in the house that he died. I feel like he got news of the fire, and got into a car accident on the way and died that way. and kate saying it was her fault, maybe she accidently caused the fire. as far as the cast, the redhead and being at miguels-Miguel picked kids up at the fire, redhead was there with them, I have no idea why the cast would play into it. the director of the show also said rebeccas new steelers jersey was a puzzle piece.
I like beth, she is hard around the edges, but so am I, so I can relate
kate and rebeccas dynamic I certainly relate to. my relationship with my mom is definitely tough. and I hope I don't do the backhanded compliments to my daughter, but im real, and im sure I have at one point or another. but I definitely try not to.
I do like toby. I have seen family members make up for someone having no significant other for yrs, then when a bf or gf enters the pic its hard for them to step back.
