I decided I would save $70 and bathe the dogs myself today.

After a lot of bending and cussing and arguing with the GSD that yes, her rear end needs to be bathed just as much as the rest of her, I have two clean, fluffy, nice-smelling dogs.

So I went out and bought some tiger print Toms I have been wanting for 2 months. $53 w/free shipping (used a $5 coupon I found online). Go LSU Tigers!

I netted $17.

I think I will just send the dogs to be bathed next month. It's in the budget and my back aches now.

We have a giant dog, bull mastiff/rot mix. He LOVES taking a bath.

OMG! My 2 dogs....one GSD and one GSD mix (only 45lbs) got sprayed by a skunk at 2:30am one night last year. I bathed Roxie the mix and she was an angel......Bolt, the GSD on the other hand....not gonna happen. There was no . way . in . he!! he was gonna stand for that!! :lmao: I paid $80 (because they had to do it 3x) at Petsmart when they opened in the morning to have him tolerable!!

You deserve every penny of those Toms!! Enjoy!! Glad your dogs now have fluffy butts!! :)

Ohhhhh. . .SKUNKS!!!!!!!!!! I would just hand my credit card over to the groomer and say "here you go. . ." and pay whatever I was told for skunks.

You poor thing! Poor puppies!

I'm laughing because my 160 pound English Mastiff baby and 120 pound St. Bernard decided to chase the black cat in the dark last week...they did not see the white stripe going down its back and ugh the stench!! We bathed them in the back yard with tomato juice...I should have videotaped that incident!

Let's just say they were very humble after that incident, although my St. Bernard will probably continue to chase "black cats"!! :goodvibes

As a groomer, I giggled at the op's post....skunk dogs are no fun for anyone!!!;)

:rotfl::lmao:

I am lucky in that I am the owner of a lab. They generally LOVE the water, and don't need to be bathed often if at all. He's also a puppy and so far, I can still pick him up and plop him wherever he needs to be:lmao:.

However, I can sympathize with your post as every few weeks my sister calls me over for bath night for her Olde English Sheep dog. He's HUGE (think small pony), and hates the bath. It generally involves wrestling, laughing, some cursing, the two of us soaked to the bone, and him nowhere near the as wet as us even though he's the one in the shower.

steps to washing our 70lb weimaraner

1. close all other escape routes
2. move everything in house that is brake able up high
3. drag dog into bath room
4. left dead weight of statue dog to put her in bath tub
5. listen to whining and crying while she is washed
6. dry dog (haha like thats every going to happen)
7. open bathroom door and yell wet dog to warn everyone in house to get out of way

she goes from chasing, statue, whining, to zoomy dog. The 28 fee to wash her is so worth it.

All the skunk stories reminded me of a time about ten years ago. DH, my father and 2 older DS had gone on a guys weekend. This left me home alone with my 2 DDs,my youngest DS, my dog and my fathers dog. Well my dogs have always considered themselves to be hunters. I went into the backyard not long before my DDs had to go to their evening activities and looked over and my dog had caught a skunk.

She got sprayed, she stunk my entire house stunk, my 2 DDs both had complaints at their activities because they stunk. I considered myself lucky because my fathers dog somehow smelled like his normal self.

I had to give my dog multiple bathes, this was made difficult because it was just me and my young kids.

I can sympathize with the skunk stories. I had a cat get skunked a few years back. When I opened the door in the evening to call him in he came running.... but had barely made it past the threshold before I caught wind of his smell! I didn't know what to do at that moment so I tossed him into the basement with an old blanket that I was willing to sacrifice and figured I'd deal with it in the morning.

It took MULTIPLE baths in MULTIPLE products (pet shampoo, tomato juice, vinegar/water, etc) before he was even TOLERABLE to be around. And sadly, he went to his grave a few months later still smelly slightly skunky! (I mostly noticed it when I held him and put my nose into his fur.) Picture a big tortoise-shell tabby being bathed in the driveway in a bucket of tomato juice. Wish I had gotten pictures! The indignity of it all!! What does the groomer use to remove the smell??

Funny enough though, I still have that blanket. After a few washes with regular detergent and some vinegar rinse, it smells just fine.

Anyhow OP, good for you for finding a way to afford the special shoes!! ........P

Geaux Tigers indeed!

I must see these Toms. :)

Use mouthwash rather than tomato juice, not as messy!

Our greyhound is very stoic about baths. Summers outside are easy, the shower in cold weather is a bit of a tight fit.

I love Toms. I know it's so ridiculous to pay that much for such a basic shoe but they are so cute! I just wore my orange ones (that have a sun embroidered on them for some AIDS charity) to the Bears game today!

I've read to use 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 Cup baking soda & 2 teaspoons Dawn dish liquid. Mix it together & apply to DRY dog from behind dog's collar to tail. Do not get in pets eyes. (Wear gloves). Leave on for about 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly & repeat until smell is gone. If dog's face has been sprayed, carefully use a sponge to apply & rinse carfully, holding dog's head up so it won't go in eyes.

We have a new pet place that opened in our neighborhood shopping center called Unleashed by petco. It is $10 to bathe the dog yourself, they provide everything needed, including blowers, shampoo, and waterproof aprons. The basin is elevated so no bending and stooping required. plus there is a table to dry the dog. If I had two dogs they would probably get baths on different days. Maybe you have one near you?
Now a skunk dog.. that I would pay someone else to do! :scared1:

lol....

DH and I tag team our two mastiffs. DH puts on his swim trunks and gets into the shower stall in the bathroom off the bedroom. I corral the two dogs into the bedroom and shut the door. Then I get to drag them one at time into the shower stall with DH. He closes the glass door and turns the shower into a mastiff car wash. Then I handle the drying off when he's done scrubbing and rinsing.

Nail trimming now? That definitely involves a trip to the Petsmart groomers- I used to trim my boxers' nails with no issues, but man, these mastiffs have claws a dragon would be proud of.

I feel your pain.

Our cat got sprayed by a skunk once, and he cried and cried as I bathed him.

The poor thing was humiliated, sick and frustrated beyond belief.
