This is going to sound really strange

I had something similar happen and DH told me -- even though you thought you were awake you were asleep. All I could think of is 'oh no I wasn't -- I was FULLY aware of what was going on' That was at least 18 years ago but I can remember it like it just happened & I tend to forget what I did 5 minutes ago.

I was sleeping, woke up and could NOT move, it was the scariest feeling, then I went to say something and literally no voice or anything. I immediately thought this is how people in comas must feel, fully aware but can't get others to know that. I literally just forced myself to scream which took all my effort & nothing came out until finally my voice squeaked (even though in my head I was attempting to scream at full force) and then I was able to move and things were back to normal. It freaked me out. I told DH about it as it was early on in our marriage and he just went "oh you were sleeping even though you thought you were awake" -- I was thinking you are an idiot, I was NOT sleeping...I do NOT sleep and remember things like that nor feel fully awake and know where I'm at, etc...

Thankfully it has never happened since but it still freaks me totally out to this day.
That sounds like sleep paralysis. I have dealt with that since I was a teenager, but thankfully haven't had an episode in about 8-10 years and hopefully I won't have anymore. They are horrible and are really frightening.

You should look up "Exploding Head Syndrome". It's when you hear stuff in that twilight period between wake and sleep. Usually it's a sound like a gunshot or an explosion, but I've also heard my name.

Totally fascinating, and it's fun to tell people you have Exploding Head Syndrome.... just for the shock value!

I had this happen to me - it's SO real. I woke late one night, dreaming about a ball of fire falling to Earth, and then there was an EXPLOSION! It actually knocked me out of my bed. I screamed for DH (night owl, still awake) and my ears were actually ringing. He came running and I swore that there had been an explosion while he looked at me like I'd lost my mind. He said there was no explosion and I even turned on the news to see if he was right.

It really shook me up. I had the same experience twice more that week (the second two times not quite as intense as the first).

I've had that happen. I'll see myself walking, say through the woods, and I'll trip on a branch and my whole body will jerk, like I really did. But I was in that ozone layer, as I call it, the zone you go into where you're not asleep yet, but not awake either.

What if you say no & you really haven't ever heard your name when no one is around? Do you think you are lying? :confused3 I've had weird experiences but never heard my name when no one else was around.

I have no idea. I was actually asked that question as a teen, and I did say no because I didn't think I ever had. Months later, I did hear my name so I asked at my next appointment and that's what she told me. I think it may be something that is completely normal, but if you're in a psychologist's office and they ask that, if you say yes than you think it may mean you're crazy so some people may say no. I would guess that they just figure it out by how you're actually responding - tone, body signs, etc versus your actual answer.

I've had this happen but not while I'm in a dream. I just hear the loud noise. I'm a teeth grinder in my sleep and I figured I was really grinding them hard and loudly and it woke me up!! Maybe not, maybe my head is exploding! :rotfl2:

I've actually been awakened by, "Brenda, go write her letter." I remember saying aloud, "I think I'll go take my shower." And then again, louder and more bold, "Brenda, get up and go write that letter NOW."

Man, was I ticked off. I knew it was God. It was loud but not aloud. Very strange.

I get up, grab a pen and paper and my bible and go sit in the LR and say, "Why do I have to write a letter to her? She wronged me not the other way around. This is not fair."

As awake as I was at this point it was no longer the loud voice but just the inner voice that reminds you to do the right thing in life telling me that the Bible doesn't say to go to someone if you have wronged them but if someone has wronged you that you should go to them.
I suppose that is why the bible says it and puts it that way. lol

Anyway, I wrote the note and after having about 5+ yrs. trouble with this person, it all ended nice enough. :)
Weird, weird experience.

I know I was watching a medical show once on people who DIDN'T have their bodies do that when they sleep and they really could get hurt. It was still frightening and although I'm pretty sure that's probably what it was -- I don't think I was supposed to ever be conscious that it happens. I had no idea your body is in a paralized state while you were sleeping -- I think I'd be better off not knowing.

Needless to say, it took me quite a while to go back to sleep. All I can think of is the bible story where God is calling Samuel. I just wonder.....though I'm too scared to say "it's me God, what do you want?"

:thumbsup2 If I heard my name, I would think the same thing and go...umm...I don't think I want to ask what he wants!! I may not like the answer.

i have had it happen only a few times, maybe twice. i usually hear a male voice, as well. and my husband has either been asleep, or not even there when it's happened(and it's only him, myself, and our 3 cats in the house).

i just tell people "it's the ghost" because we have weird things that happen in the house, so i'm always like "it was the ghost!" it freaks my one friend out lol

In your case, maybe it's your subconscious trying to remind you that you have a little friend you now need to take care of even at night.

But, the laugh was more like a menacing cackle! Nothing like a sweet little friend!

Your experiences sound more than sleeping! Do you have a hot line straight to God???

I've had a few strange experiences. The only time I ever heard a voice was when I was very overworked and the voice told me to stop.

I have many dreams where I am awake and know I am dreaming. I've had a couple of sleep paralysis instances. I read somewhere that the best way to wake up from that is to try to move your pinkie. I did it and it worked, so it's not so scary anymore.

One night I woke up and heard music playing in our house. My husband was working late and our ds was asleep. I walked into our living room and it sounded like the music was coming from everywhere. As I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on, it stopped.

In the morning I thought about it and the only thing in our house that it could have been was our intercom system that we can use to play music. But why would it come on and off by itself? It had never happened before or since. So strange.

Another time, I woke up in the middle of the night and remember being scared because someone was standing in my bedroom. Then I remember mentally communicating with this "person" and telling the person that I already knew what he or she was telling me. Then I remember my heart beating so fast from the fear of the experience that I thought I might have a heart attack.

In the morning I could not remember who it was that I dreamed about or what they said. It was so real though.

LOL I know (or don't think) you were responding to me, but I have to say that when it first happened, my first thought was the hymn "Here I am Lord", and I'm not religious nor go to church!

I sleep on my stomach and one night I felt someone (thing) lightly shove on my back and nothing else, it was pretty weird. Another time I heard a male call my name loudly and I responded, "Yeah?" but no response, it must've been twilight sleep. It was also the night I went to a couple of bars :lol

Has anyone ever been able to wake themseves up form a dream? I've heard it's not very common, but it happened to me. I was running from something or after something and I said, "ok stop!", I scrunched my eyes tight, opened them in my dream and I woke up. Weird!

Just recently I heard a female voice calling MOM, really loud and firm. I know I was not asleep as my dh gets up early for work and I got up to use the bathroom. I laid back down and then there it was!! I got up and started looking in on the kids and they were sound asleep!! I have NO idea what that was...:confused3

Oh, I just remembered the creepiest thing that ever happened to me and my husband. We were sleeping in a guest room at his parent's house and in the middle of the night I woke up and heard a child's voice say, "Help me mommy. Help me." It didn't sound like my boys, who were in the next room sleeping. It was a little girl's voice. I was so scared that I just froze. I was too scared to say anything to my husband or even move my head. I was literally frozen with fear.

In the morning I mentioned it to my husband. He had heard it too. :scared1: Luckily, nothing like that ever happened again at their house.

OMG! This happened to me several weeks ago for the second time.

Both times I was sound asleep. Someone (male I didn't recognize) just said, "Lori". Not in a menacing way or shouting or anything, but firm.

I immediately woke up. Opened my eyes and laid very still (no paralysis or anything like that) waiting to see if it was going to happen again. Nope. Both times it was just my name once.

Needless to say, it took me quite a while to go back to sleep. All I can think of is the bible story where God is calling Samuel. I just wonder.....though I'm too scared to say "it's me God, what do you want?"

Wow....these stories are pretty heavy, but yours struck me the most by putting it in that context. Pretty powerful stuff.

These stories are amazing....I have had weird stuff happen & there have been times I SWORE I heard my mom call my name. But if I was paralyzed and couldn't move or scream momentarily that would seriously freak me out! What in the world could cause that???

Wow...I guess that's my answer...sorry I didn't see that sooner. I never heard of such a thing. That sounds AWFUL for anyone!!

I have heard my name being shouted when I am asleep. It wakes me right up. I am sure it is my husband's voice. He is never in the house when this happens. My experience is that it is when I am not feeling well and decide to take a nap even though subconsciously I know I should be doing other things.

The houses here have gates/walls around them that makes it impossible for people to get to the front door to knock. They must push a very loud buzzer for me to answer using a phone. I have also had this same sort of experience when I wake up suddenly to the sound of that buzzer. Nobody is at my gate.

Yep, I have forced myself awake from dreams several times. Usually it's an uncommonly sad/bad dream that I don't want to believe, or it's just too weird and I realize I must be dreaming. I wish though, that I would force the dream in a different direction rather than actually making my eyes open. Lucid dreaming seems like it would be a blast!

i get that once in a while. altho luckily it's never scared me, i've always actually been more annoyed with it, i sit there thinking "omg hurry UP i don't want to lay in bed anymore!" lol

it sounds weird, but i SWEAR that's exactly what i'm thinking when it happens.
