'Use the partial-sums algorithm to add. Show your work. 35 + 79'

????????????????????

This scares me, I know I probably will not be able to help with High School math, but I would like to think second grade math I could handle!!

Christy

Okay, 35 + 79.

35 = 30 + 5
79 = 70 + 9

30 + 70 + 5 + 9

30 + 70 = 100

5 + 9 = 14

100 + 14 = 114

Is that what they are asking for?

I'm lost. I'll have to call my 2nd grader in and ask if she knows that they are looking for.

Ok. Partial-sums algorithm is when you add the numbers in each column and then add the columns together. IE:35 + 79

3+7 = 10
5+9 = 014
= 114

The word algorithm simply means a way to work to work out a math problem.

Partial sums would mean to add up the ones column, write that down under the problem. Then add the tens digits and place that sum under the ones sum. Add together to get the total.

21
+43
-------
4
60
----------
64

This helps the students realize that when they add the digits in the tens place, they are really adding 20 and 40, not 2 and 4.

Hope this helps! :)

Hi Bethany- :wave2:
Yeah, this is 2nd grade math in our school dist.!!

Matthew and Chrissy are doing 3 digit multiplication now!! No kidding. Matthew can do it no problem. Chrissy can't seem to grasp the concept, but I can understand with her, with her dev delays and where she is cognitively. 3 digit by 3 digit multiplication by hand!! I'm not kidding!!
Chrissy's room teacher and SST have really pushed her, I mean REALLY pushed her this school yr with the math. Takes 3 hrs/ night, I'm not kidding, with all the homework for 3rd grade!! This was for Chrissy. Matthew took half the time to do his work because he picked up on the math real fast.
There were alot of nights this school yr I really pulled my hair out with all hte homework they gave EVERY night, math tests 2times/week, spellings test once/ week. Social studies projects had to be done at home, etc.
Welcome to 3rd grade when Sam goes in August!! It is a tough grade, believe me!!! I wasn't warned at any team mtgs last yr at this time about 3rd grade until AFTER the fact!! Can you tell I had a frustrating yr with homework with the kids?
Alot of times Chrissy rebelled at home and had tantrums because of all the homework. Don and I literally had to drag Chrissy to the table a few times to help her finish her homework!! They had extremely high expectations of Chrissy this school yr and I'm sure hte expectations will be the same from my school again for 4th grade. I thought just my school was bad with the homework, but I guess it is most of the schools in our dist.

Hang in there! Each grade gets worse with the homework and expectations!!

I prefer the old way, the one I learned 55 years ago. :teacher:
ok, maybe not 55 years ago ;) but I prefer the way I learned too. What's wrong with carrying the 1?

oh well, the homeowrk is done. Ill worry about 3rd grade in August. LOL

???
Sheesh! Most 2nd graders I know of don't know the meaning of the word algorithm, let alone how to spell it or do it!

I know that children can learn almost everything if given the proper teaching. But if the parents can't help their kids with homework, how in the world do they expect kids to learn it? :confused3

Why do I have this strange feeling that our kids in freshman yr. of high school in our school dist. will be learning calculus?? :rotfl:

what ever happened to just adding?

it's all part of the Evil Education Agenda (EEA) to teach kids that their parents are idiots - you'll see the fruits in the teen years... ;);)

:lmao:

The problem is some of that education may be gone by the time they are teens. I was in a Quiznos over the weekend. My food was $6.42 and I gave the girl a $1 off coupon. She says $2.33. I said, that can't be right. She said it was right. Then it hits her when she goes to give me the change. She looks at the display and says she took off a free sandwich instead of $1. So it took off $4.09. She calls over another teen and they are both studying it. I said well, the difference is $3.09, so give me the change and I'll give you $3.09 back. She says "I need a calculator...". They finally took my word for it and took the $3.09. Meanwhile, my sandwich was getting cold......

ugh! i had to take a class at my college last semester teaching us different ways to teach math....the beginning of the semester, we were so confused..i want to add like i was taught!

Wait until you hit middle school math :scared: You'll really feel dumb! DD doesn't even bother to ask me for help anymore :sad2: . If she is having trouble on her homework, I'll ask her to let me see it, she tells me forget it mom, you'll never understand it. You know what, she's right :lmao: They actually have manuals for the parents, still didn't help me though

With the stuff they are already learning in 6th grade I wonder what will be left when they hit high school :confused3

:lmao: I just had to crack up at this. I have a 6th grader (I've given up on her math and to think I took College Algebra in HS and passed with an A) and a 3rd grader.

The way they "carry the one" here is so bizarre I can't handle it. I am forever going "why are you doing it THAT way?" Seems like they are making it more work for themselves.

Then again, I got my DD in trouble in 2nd grade math because I taught her a shortcut for timed math tests and she told me after she took the test that way she was told not to do that. She basically got in a small bit of trouble. She was so mad (at me for suggesting it) as this is my child that likes to conform :confused3

I was always taught on any timed tests, you go and do the problems you KNOW off the top of your head without thinking first and then go back and fill in the ones you can't just spit out instantly. Apparently that's not the correct way to do math timed tests anymore - you have to go in rows...so she would end up with complete rows undone since she ran out of time, get really low scores yet if she did it the way I taught her she would have easily passed.

Oh well, I'm always getting them in trouble somehow at school for doing such things. Oops! :stir:

I just send them to dad for math help now. :teacher:
