Data roaming is the worst. When my DH was in Jordan his phone had been roaming without his knowledge for 45 minutes and the bill was almost $300. They have this new law here in Canada that's supposed to be coming soon where they're forcing the cell phone companies to put a cap on these kinds of charges. I will be interested to see if this new law will really work or if they will find a different way to ding you.

This is why I take the battery out of my phone and put it in the safe. Extreme? Maybe, but no surprise bills.

Okay, what is the difference between shutting off data roaming and airplane mode? And can you use wifi in both?

Still pretty confused about all this and NOT wanting to take the easy way out and just shut the phone off.

I want to be able to use the phone (iphone) for taking pics and then logging onto the ships wifi (for which I'll buy a package of minutes) or free wifi in a port to check FB, upload some pics and check in with family via iphone's imessages or Facetime (which are supported through wifi and do not need cell service.

Trying to figure out what to shut off and how to adjust my settings and the kids iphone settings. Help!

With an iPhone, you can put the phone on Airplane mode (which shuts off connections to outside networks by default) and turn on/off Wifi at will. These settings will prevent the phone from attempting to connect to local cellular networks, but allow you to connect to the internet using the Wifi connection when you need to.

Airplane mode will turn off your data and wifi. If you use airplane mode you can turn wifi back on if you want. You could also manually turn off data if you want to instead of using airplane mode. I'm always super scared my phone will roam so I turn off the data and use airplane mode. The only thing is if you're in a different time zone the time on your phone will be wrong.

I agree. I only kept my iPhone on airplane mode so I had the camera and the clock. Other than that it was a lovely paperweight.
