I just got dd(3)'s temp down from 105.0! It took me 45 minutes after Motrin using cold cloths to get it down. It is now 1.5 hours after Motrin and it is 104.1. Whew... Should be an interesting night. :(

Here is some prayers and pixie dust to all the other little ones suffering from this flu! It is a tough one.

Karen

I'm sorry to hear about your lil one. I hope she gets well soon. I know how it feels when you have a sick one. 105 is very high, did you take her to the hospital? I would be freaking out by now, but I start to freak out as soon as the temp reaches 103. I really wish you and your dd well.

Poor baby... I'll say a special prayer for her that she's feeling better real soon..

Has it gone through the rest of the house as well?

I feel for ya! My 4 year old was 105.4 last night at 11pm...after a call to the Dr... she told me to use motrin and cold compresses and if the fever wasn't under 104 within 30 minutes to go right to the emergancy room with her. Well it went to 103.6 so we made it until the morning when the office opened to go in. Hers isn't the flu, its a virus topped by a very bad ear infection. The Dr said a lot of kids have it and it will last around 5 days...which means straight through Christmas...we have already cancelled our Christmas eve party and I don't think we will be going to relative for Christmas dinner so I have to run out tomorrow and buy food to make dinner for us here!

No, she is the first. :( I guess we will see how contagious it really is!

I didn't take her to the hospital because her peds don't want a call until 106. lol... At 106 I call 911... not the peds!

She is down to 103.3 now and acting perkier!

She was muttering that her feet hurt at 105! Now at 103.3 she is eating a sucker (after a popsicle). Kids really do rebound nicely! Until the Motrin wears off, that is...

Poor babies....I hope they're all doing better soon. Sending pixie dust and hugs your way!

her peds don't want a call until 106.

 What!?

I was freaking out at 104.6. Our Dr. said 104 is an automatic trip to the ER if it doesn't go down within 30 minutes.

I thought 105 was the seizure threshold?

Wow... well I guess I won't be calling them tonight! If she spikes again and doesn't go below 104 on motrin, then I will definitely take her to the ER.

Of course, this is the same Peds that completely missed my son's Scarlet Fever! I have zero faith in these docs... but you can't switch peds without a newborn around here! They are all full!

Thanks!

Karen

Floridafam - my son at 15 months old, had a febrile seizure at 104.2, despite Tylenol. Due to his temp rising rapidly, it just shot right up.

Edited to add: kids have different thresholds for febrile seizures, it's not one specific temp.

Zakatak - I know it's hard to see them so sick. Also, be sure to put her in a tepid not cold bath to keep the fever down if she starts to spike again, it does help after running water over their body with a wash cloth/sponge. It actually helps them sleep better after.

Hoping for a quick recovery and that no one else in your family gets it.

Abby's temp just shot from 103.1 to 104.8 in twenty minutes. And I still have to wait 1.5 hours before I can give her some Motrin. I don't have any Tylenol either. I will get her in the bath at 105... other than that, what can I do? :(

DH went out  so I can't run out and get any tylenol. I didn't expect it to spike so soon. :(

Karen

You may want to get her in the bath now... they also have these cooling gel things for your head that stick on rather than wet wash cloth. If you get a chance to get out I think they are called bekool or something to that effect..

Keeping her in my thoughts :( How awful.

Now it is up to 105.3! Crap. I did find some tylenol, it was good, and gave her some. Now I don't know how long to wait before I can give her Motrin... 4 hours?

I hope it comes down fast.

My girls loved the misty fans we got for WDW, it really helped them feel better and they had some fun too. I put warm water in it so it doesn't shock the skin when it sprays on them though.

Personally, anything over 103 is when I panic. I head to the er.

I was told that 2 hours after giving motrin you could administer tylenol. (pretty much alternating every 2 hours..) Please keep us updated.
Praying for you.

I just called the pediatrician and she said that it doesn't matter what the fever gets up to, that it is the body's way of fighting the virus (flu). They have seen a TON of kids lately with the flu (coughing, runny nose, sore throat, high fever) and there is nothing they can do. She said I don't even need to treat the fever or even take her temp! Ummm... I would still call 911 if it hit 106, I tell ya!

So, she is asleep now, still 105.3 on Tylenol, but I can give her more motrin at 9:15pm, the doc said you can give them together, just give Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin ever 6 hours. I did not know you could give them together! She acted like I shouldn't have even given her the Tylenol... she said the fever will not go higher than 105. Hmmmm...

I don't know about all that... still makes me so worried to see her so HOT. :( She did tie the record in our house, though, at 105.3. Isn't that just great?

Thanks for the support. I was a little panicky and all alone.

Karen

I think it is time to get professional help. Take her to the ER!! She has an infection somewhere with a temp that high. With a virus they usually just run a temp around 103. not the high one you are talking about.

I used to work for a pediatrician and from what I remember is that when the temp gets that high it is time to get help. Yes you can alternate the Motrin and the Tylenol. Why dont you call the ER and see what they say.

Please keep us updated. Prayers sent your way.

I know those high fevers are scary. We were lucky during our bout with the flu, 103.5 was as high as either of my girls got. Here is a quote from a book I swear by "Your Child's Health" by Barton Schmitt, MD. My good friend who is a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases gave it to me. She told me to look at it before I call her on something because that is the book she'll look in first! Anyway, it says "Most fevers associated with viral illnesses range between 101 and 104 and last for 2 to 3 days. In general, the height of the fever doesn't relate to the seriousness of the illness. How sick you child acts is what counts. Fever causes no permanent harm (such as brain damage) until it reaches 107 or 108. Fortunately, the brain's thermostat keeps untreated fevers due to infections below 105 or 106. While all children get fevers, only 4% develop a brief febrile convulsion. Since this type of seizure is generally harmless, it is not worth worrying abut, especially if you child has experience high fevers without one." He does go on to say that a fever of over 105 warrents an immediate call to the doctor as does a febrile convulsion.

If you aren't already, I suggest keeping a piece of paper listing the time and fever along with what meds you give at that time. It can help make sure you aren't overdosing (a 5 year old died here last month from a Tylonal overdose over a week, they were using 1/2 of an adult tablet for her). I will add my prayers that your little one gets over it quickly. Mine had fevers from 100 (with Advil) to 103.5 for 6 days. Yuck!

My 14 year old got to 104.5 with this flu-and both the nurse line at Denver Childrens Hospital and his Doc, who I trust said not to go to the ER-just give him motrin-He is quite large (6'3" and 190) and they had me giving him 600 milligrams every 6 hours. It was pretty scary since he rarely gets sick, but we got to the Doc as soon as the office was open and got him on Amatadine and he snaped back pretty quick.

Karen, I would be freaking too. My dd's sick, 102 temp and I'm already starting to worry. I called the Ped's office and they don't have any appointments, she said I have to call back in the morning for an appointment for tomorrow. I know fevers tend to spike at night. I'm praying for your little girl, I hope her fever goes down soon.
