"This" and "Next" weekend

Had a confusing conversation with my sons fiance last night (Thursday 02/20 9pm). She wanted me to do something "Next" weekend. To me, that meant the weekend of the 29/1st. To her, it was the 22/23.

When do you use "This" for last weekend and the next upcoming weekend?
When does "Next" weekend become the weekend after the very next one?

My cutoff is like Wednesday AM !! "This" becomes the very next one and "Next" is the following.
Mon/Tue, "This" was last weekend and "Next" is the very next one.

If you make plans on a Saturday or Sunday for next weekend, it’s for the following weekend.

If you make plans on Monday-Friday you would say this weekend.

If you make plans on Monday-Friday for next weekend, that would be over a week away, though I would clarify with the person you’re making plans with.

I agree with the Wednesday cutoff.

"This weekend" is the closest weekend to today. "Next weekend" is the one after that.

Wednesdays "round up" - just like 5s in math.

This is why I’m a weirdo who says “this COMING weekend”...as in the the very first weekend to arrive.

The following weekend is “next”.

This again. Unfortunately, my husband and his family speak the opposite and it drives me crazy. Maybe your son's fiancee is related to them! I can't tell you how many times my kids and I have been burned by my husband's definition of this weekend, which I interpret to be the weekend referenced during Monday-Friday of the week immediately preceding it, but he interprets to be the weekend you are in. We always ask for date clarification so we know exactly which weekend he intends to do something.

I agree with this! My father (in his 60’s) would say “next” weekend is Sat, Feb 22 and Sun, Feb 23 Drives me nuts!

EXACTLY THIS! And yes im shouting! I had a debate in the office about this exact topic. I cant tell you how ruffled my feathers were. Half of the office agreed with the other girl about what "next weekend" was...the other half sided with me. Yes we felt it was important to take a vote Lol! It will forever be the way described by @L&Lfan above. Anyone else who says differently is just wrong. Sorry. Thats just how it is.

My daughter and I have this very go-round once in a while, so I have taken to saying "this coming weekend" or "this past weekend." But I also try to clarify with date.

As soon as I wake up on a Monday morning the upcoming weekend becomes "THIS" weekend, because it is literally the end of this week, as in the current week. When I wake up on a Saturday or Sunday, those days are still considered to be "THIS" weekend to me, because I am experiencing that weekend currently as in THIS is the weekend.

For me "NEXT" weekend always implies that there is still at least a partial weekend between whatever day it currently is and the full weekend that I am referring to. So if it's Sat. or Sun. and I say NEXT weekend, I mean the very next Sat. or Sun. because I am currently living out THIS weekend as I speak. But once Monday hits, if I say NEXT weekend, I mean one full weekend (THIS weekend) goes by first and then it's the one after that.

As of Monday morning, "this weekend" means the Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 days away. "Next weekend" is 12 and 13 days away.

On Saturdays and Sundays, "this weekend" means the one we're currently experiencing.

"This weekend" is never "last weekend". Last weekend is last weekend. If today is Monday, "last weekend" is yesterday. "This weekend" is never yesterday.

This weekend is the weekend immediately following the work week. If my wife and I are talking on Monday about what are plans are for "this weekend", we mean the weekend coming up at the end of this week.

"Next weekend" is always the weekend after next week. I mean, heck, how is this different than "this week" and "next week"? If it's Monday morning, "this week" is the week you are in. "next week" is 7 days away.

Same round and round happens here. If "next" weekend is the upcoming weekend, then what does "this" weekend mean? No right or wrong, just personal visualization of time.

I think I do occasionally say "this past weekend" or "this coming weekend" when I want to be really clear. But usually it seems pretty self explanatory to me.

O/T but related is should I be talking to a friend from church on a Saturday and say to them "I'll see you tomorrow" There will be silence for a few seconds followed by a reply of "I'll see you Sunday." (As if it took them time to connect that "tomorrow" IS Sunday. The same with when I was in the choir and we had rehearsals on Thursday night and I talked to a fellow member Wednesday. Not complaining just funny and very specific!

On topic, I completely agree that "this weekend"=February 22nd and 23rd. "Next weekend"=February 29th-March 1st

This Weekend can refer to the weekend that just passed only in context and verbage used in the sentence such as on Monday morning upon arriving at work you state, "I got so hammered this weekend." But on the same Monday morning if I'm making reference to making plans, "Let's go out for dinner this weekend", would mean the coming weekend. Never would Next weekend be the Saturday / Sunday following the day of the week I am on.
